Want to Stay Home - How to Convince Hubby?

I have been working full time out of the home since my daughter was a little over 2 months old and I hate it! My priorities have shifted and now I want to focus on my family. My current employment is ending in the next month or so (my company has gone bankrupt) and I am taking it as a sign to make a change. Have any of you successfully convinced your significant other that it would be best for you to stay home? How did you do it? I am not against working out of the home, but I do not anticipate bringing in as much money and probably not having benefits. BUT, the benefits to the family would greatly outweigh the negatives in the long run (at least that is what I think). Any ideas how I can bring this up in a positive light? Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Ask him to sit down with a financial planner. A professional might be better at showing him that you can afford it. I can refer you two to couple that offer free consultations. Let me know if you're interested.

I'm sorry to hear about your company but am glad to see you treat this as an opportunity!!

Can you draw up a current budget and then show ways to reduce spending to make up for your lost income? Consider the cost of day care, your work expenses (travel, clothing, clothing maintenance, etc.) against what it would cost for you to stay at home: lost income, slightly higher utility bills - although maybe leave this off as it may not help your case ; ) and present it to him. See if you can find less expensive car insurance, cancel magazine subscriptions and cut corners in ways to make this work.

Good luck to you and I hope this wonderful opportunity works out for you!

I went through the same thing about 7 or 8 years ago with my husband. the best thing is to show him that you can budget your funds and still do the things that are important to the family with only one income. If there was something that was a splurge item for you, tell him that you will cut it out of the budget. I don't regret making my choice and cutting out some of the fluff items! making this change allowed me to help at school as a classroom volunteer, attend all kinds of sporting events etc. and get involved in our community, and take our children to daytime programs at the local library, tumbling classes at waubonsee etc. It was wonderful. now the youngest is 13 and I still stay home and do a lot of volunteer work in my community!

I am sorry to hear about your job. I convinced my boyfriend to let me stay home and attend college for two years and I told him that if I stay home and just worry about school that when I graduate I could get a great paying job and make more money than before I started college. It worked! Now I am out of college and I just started a great career and going to be making great money. The job that I just got, I can set my own hours, work from home and go meet clients on my time.

If you are intersted in something like this, just to make some extra money $300 to $400.00 a month part time. Give me a call at ###-###-####.

I hope this works out for you. You've gotten a lot of good advice already. Just remember this doesn't have to be an all or nothing situation (Part time work to have a little for yourself or to pay for some of life's unexpected expenditures. I do that). Also if you find it doesn't work out, there's no reason you can't go back to working full time if you must. Best wishes!

Hi, A.!

I think that as long as you are making some additional income to help with the finances of your family, and you have the ability to do that while working from home, any husband should at least take a look at the options.

Here is my story...

I am a mother of two children, ages 13 and 19. I am engaged to a wonderful man with two children, ages 2 and 7. The 7 year old lives with us and I stay at home with her.

I spent my entire life in Corporate America, other than when my 19 year old sone was born, until he turned 2. I had to work and over the years since then, I worked my way up to a Director of Recruiting. I built an awesome career for myself, making well over 6 figures, and then I was suddenly laid off, along with my entire recruiting team that I had built, and almost 100 other employees, last November!

At the time, my fiance was a stay-at-home dad, because he had had major back surgery a year earlier and once released back to work, had a hard time finding a good job in his field. Because of my salary, we were able to have him stay home to take his daughter to school and to pick her up every day.

Within three months of my lay off, we were literally buried in late bills, and although I had been trying desperately to find another job, finding one at the salary I was accustomed to, and adding the fact that I do not have a college degree, I simply was not finding any work! Corporate America had also taken its toll on me, having traveled 90% for my Director position, I was barely ever home. The stress and being undervalued and underpaid for my efforts was ridiculous.

I was introduced to an incredible direct marketing business opportunity right before I was laid off, called MonaVie. I had actually bought the product in October and started drinking it, to help me sleep at night and ease the lower back pain I have experienced since the birth of my son. I started talking about the juice to people, as it was benefitting my health greatly, and people wanted to know where they could get some MonaVie.

Long story, short, A.,....I made the decision to NEVER go back to a corporate job because life is too short and my family and family values are too important for me to sacrifice. Plus, I know that direct marketing is the way of the future and these companies are the ONLY way for people to make the unlimited income they deserve, based on the efforts they put into it! So, if you only want to make $500. extra per month, or if you want to make an additional $5000. per month, MonaVie allows for you to do just that!

I realize that, just as there are poorly run and poorly functioning corporations out there, that there are also good and bad direct marketing companies out there. SO....I did a TON of research on MonaVie and everything checked out on top. MonaVie has the product, the timing, the management team and an awesome cause all rolled into one incredible future for those who are looking for good health and good wealth!

So....with all that said.....I'd love to chat with you on the phone and send you some info on MonaVie so at least you can be informed, and then YOU can decide if it is right for you.

I love being at home, working as much or as little as I want to, being able to travel with my fiance and our children, being at all of the school functions and softball games and conferences, without being told by my employer, that I can't go, or without feeling guilty that I am leaving work behind that will need to be tending to, eventually.

MonaVie has been the ultimate blessing for me. Maybe it will be the answer for you too.

Please email me at ____@____.com, take a look at my website at thegreatproduct.com/ourabundantlives. Look at The Product, and look at The Opportunity. I will look forward to hearing from you. I sincerely hope I can solve your dilemma and give you the opportunity to stay home with your beautiful daughter!

God Bless!

I have to agree with some of the others advice to make a list of your expenses and one of possible pay/benifits of another job. When I had my daughter we looked into childcare and such and when it came right down to it I was essentially working to put the baby in daycare and pay for gas to get to work. I don't know your carreer but look into similer postions and what pay/benifits would be. then list costs of working such as daycare, gas money, and incidentals(wardrobe(?), supplies, and such)Then compare the two and see where you stand. Is a new job worth it or will staying home and saving the other costs be just as good. Also a new household budget with any ways to "tighten the belt" to make up for any losses discrepences from the totals.

After our third daughter was born, I quit my part time job to save daycare costs. My husband got so anxious he had to take meds for four months until he got used to being the sole breadwinner. In reality, he was supporting us all already. My part-time income allowed us some extras, but not much after daycare. He was fine after those 4 months. I took longer to adjust - 6 months to get used to staying home full time.

Budget, budget, budget. Make a budget. Can you survive on just your husband's salary? I guess that's the biggest question. The next would be where could you cut costs to survive on your husband's salary.

Let us know how it goes!

Lickily my hubby was all for me staying home and I really wanted to. I walked away from a good income and we're pretty tight and in some debt now...but, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Our children are only little once and we don't get the chance later to be there for all of their firsts. I figure we have the rest of our lives to pay off debt, buy new cars, take lux vacations.... Don't be fooled, though, it's the hardest job you will ever do in your life!(Easier with only 1)It's also the most important. I have a newfound respect and admiration for all stay-at-home-moms (SAHMs). The kids do grow up and give you a chance to pursue your own dreams again too. Some women work because they absolutely have to and wish they could be with their little ones, so if the opportunity presents itself, I would jump at it. It's not an irreversible decision either. Hope that helps!

Hi - I agree with the 1st response - make a list of ALL your expenses, and anticipated savings against what your husband brings home to show how it can be done on a budget.

When my company closed and I gave a try at working from home (before we had my son), my husband made my life a living hell - EVERYTHING he could to be a jerk. His mentality was if he had to get up & go to work, so did I (& I was making decent money from home - graphic design)and working at home didn't cut it. If the house wasn't PERFECT when he came home (and I was working from home during the day, not just goofing off) he wouldn't speak to me the whole evening. The snide comments, etc. just wasn't worth it. Hope your husband will be better!

i would find out why your husband is not 100% behind you staying at home. our emotional reasons tend to not cut it compared to a hubby's rational (i.e financial) reasons. my husband at first was ok with me staying home, then started making snide comments about just "playing" all day and doing nothing. then expected everything single thing to be perfect in the house. i still stay at home and intend on staying home, but we've had a few rough patches along the way. my hubby's prob was that he couldn't see parenting as a real job. until i decided to stop doing any chores or household stuff and told him to do it after his long day of "work" and while our son was chasing after him wanting to play. point taken. he gets it now.
anyways, find out why..he could be afraid of your financial situation or he could be jealous that you get to stay home and he has to work. good luck!

I work from home and love what I do. I am able to bring in extra income, make my own hours and be with my children. I am very involved in their activities as well as Vice President of the PTA. I work my home based business with Arbonne. It is a health and Wellness company that I began after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It has given me the opprtunity to be at homw as well as educate others about the dangerous ingredients in many of the products on the market. I can offer them healthy solutions. This opportunity may or may not be for you But I would love to take 30 minutes over coffee to explain it ot you. You could then go home and decide if this is a good fit. I love the flexibilty around my children's schedules and the control I have over my own income. Let me know if you would like to talk more. ###-###-####

Hi A.,
You just stated something that will not help your situation. You said "I do not anticipate bringing in as much money and probably not having benefits". That is something you do not want to say to hubby. You want to say, "I've found something that will allow me to bring in as much, if not more, and it even offers benefits. I've done my research and I want you to take a look at the company I'm strongly considering partnering with." Then you allow him to hear what you've heard so that he's comfortable with your decision. If he's comfortable with your decision, then he'll be supportive.

He needs to know that you are not about to bring the house down with a financial burden. The stress of your current job situation is enough. Trust me... I've been there...twice! But it's been almost 4 years since I've been a SAHM. With that being said, along with all the opportunities you are exploring, I'd be honored if you could find some time in your schedule to explore an opportunity I'd like to present to you. Let me know which time works best for you and the best way to reach you 5 minutes prior to your selected time.

Hi A.,

I, too, was in a situation where I wanted to be home. I was teaching elementary school, yet really wanted to be at home with my little girl. When our second one came around, I took this as an opportunity to take some time off. After 10 months of being at home I felt the desire to do some type of work to bring in extra money. Boy, am I glad I did! It has been 7 years now that I have been working from home!!! I love what I do, love that I did not have to spend $$$ on daycare, could be home with my girls, work as much or as little as I wanted and add to our income.

The best thing is, what I do benefits my kids so much. You see, I am a rep for Usborne Books...the books kids love to read! We sell awesome kids books from infant on up. Everyone who has a child, works with kids, or even KNOWS a child loves these books! I love the fact that my girls are getting these books in the home, aiding to their education, while I am making money!

Hi A.,

I am sorry to hear that you company is going out of business! Remember, when one door closes another one opens! Stay positive! (I know, easier said than done) Of course, as many have said, try your best to budget. List all of your bills, including grocery money (even pet food), etc...and try your hardest to stick to that. It is tough, but once you get use to following the budget, it gets easier. TRY to splurge atleast once a month, whether it's for yourself or someone else! (even if it's only $100)

Have you ever thought of becoming a Surrogate or an Egg Donor? Of course, monetary reasons should NOT be ones only motivation; however, you can help another family while helping your own. I am the co-owner of Family Source Consultants, located in Joliet and Oak Brook. We are an Egg Donor and Surrogacy agency -- Egg Donors receive $7000 plus in compensation and Gestational Surrogates receive $20,000 plus. A., I have three children and made the decision eight years ago to STAY HOME, but we were relying on my contribution to our income. I started Partylite to "try" to supplement, with not much confidence that it would help....Well...I will tell you...I was wrong...I have had consistent income, enough to maintain our mortgage payment, on a 4 bedroom home and help with extras as well. I agree focusing on a family is a huge benefit, and having your own business allows the flexibility to do that. i would love to just give you information and let you know what is available for you at NO investment. My husband was very skeptical at first and would not have allowed me to do this if I had to invest any money....now...he has become the sweetest support person and brags to everyone about what I do. Please feel free to contact me directly, and I will just answer questions, and can give you ideas of questions to ask of other companies as well....before you make a decision...I look forward to talking with you! ____@____.com S.
