Vomit Question - Orange Spots, No Meds Involved

My 9 yo son has a cold, and last night threw up once, and seemed fine after this (figured it was the congestion getting into his stomach. This am, he again threw up, and there are orange fleks in it. He has eaten nothing since 2 pm yesterday (not hungry), and has not drank anything red/orange (only lemonade & water before throwing up yesterday, and water and some tea since).

I have been trying to get thru to his Dr. for an hour, no luck. I'm wondering if I should bundle him up and take him to the local immediate care. He feels much better after throwing up, he is just tired and listless form being sick. He has no fever this am (did last nite, but none so far today). He has some congestion, and a little bit of a cough.

Any advice till I can get thru to the Dr? I really don't want to take him out in this cold if I don't need to!

thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the responses! His fever is back, but he is feeling better in his stomach at the moment, so we are going to continue the TLC and see where we end up. I think one of the vitamins he took yesterday may have been orange, so that could have also been it.

Thanks again - no longer freaking out!!!

2/12 I never got thru to the doctor's office. Gave up after 4 hours (I'm waiting for an intake appt with another Dr due to this problem). I think it was just phlem and stomach acid, because he has had no more problems.

Hi. More and more we are seeing acid reflux in younger and younger children. My guess is that it is stomach acid. A little milk might can help, and he needs to eat at least a few crackers, or a piece of bread. Hope you get through to the Doc soon.

Sounds like the stomach virus our family had a few weeks ago. I would to the usual stuff. Make sure he gets lots of fluids (especially juice, water, gatorade, etc). And just give him some TLC and let him chill out. The fist 24-36 hours was the worst for us (lots of throwing up). It may progress into diahrea. after 72 hours he may still feel tired but after that he should be pretty much back to normal. Good luck and hope your guy feels better soon!

My sister in law is a pediatric nurse practitioner. When my son how his bout with a stomach virus she told me to give him clear liquids only until he stopped vomiting and then to gradually put him on solids, start with the soft stuff - bread, soups with noodles, etc. She also told me to not to give him anything to eat or drink for two hours after he vomits, to give his stomach time to rest/recover. When your son does eat, give him small portions at a time. I would continue to try to reach his doctor first. I pray a speedy recovery for your son!!!

I agree with the previous response, my god daughter just had this last week, same stomach virus, I hear it's going around lots and lots :(, though she did have it for 7 days with fevers coming and going and throwing up with orange flakes too. Good luck, hopefully it won't last too long for your son

Honestly, I would take him to an ER. It does not hurt at all to have it checked out. I am the one who believes in this...better than sorry. Even I had a doctor who told me that mothers usually know best and for peace of our mind, go ahead and take our child to ER.

That's sound like what happened to me when I was sick.

I was in the hospital (something unrelated to throwing up) for about a month when I was 14. I didn't eat until maybe the last week there because I kept throwing up (I was being "fed" through the IV). I threw up all sort of colors with an empty stomach but it usually ranged from orange to green/yellow.

With an empty stomach, you just get weird colors because of your stomach acid reacting to whatever is left along the lining of your stomach. If you throw up too much, you also will see black flecks.

He may just have a slight case of food poisoning. Monitor him, but don't stress too much. And if you can give him some dairy to releive the acidity a bit.

Hi M.-
Could this be stomach acids/bial? That would be my first guess. If it's not pink/red, then I wouldn't worry about blood. I would wait to hear from your doctor before taking him to the urgent care, but if your gut is saying otherwise, then listen to that! -J.

Just wait until you reach the doctor. The digestive tract is a funny thing. You never know what could turn to orange in there!
