I didn't give either of my boys vitamins until they were 2 because their pediatrician said they didn't need it before then. They were both breastfed until about 7 months and then formula until 1. Each dr will tell a parent something different, so it is up to you.

My pediatrician said that if our son (also 13 months) is eating well and drinking milk well (he drinks only cows milk now) that he shouldn't need vitamins. And he is healthy and a great eater! We do give him flouride (when we remember!) because there is none in our water but that is for his teeth and is a little different than vitamins. I think it is really up to you but I don't think that it will "make or break" your sons health either way. He should be getting the majority of his nutrition from what he eats just like adults do.

My ped. reccomends no vitamins as long as my children eat well balanced diet. I started giving my daughter vitamins at 3 years old, just to boost immune system. Its not 100% given that children need them. Talk to your pediatrician and go with what they reccommend, unless you sense that maybe its not the right advice, then seek another opinion. I see a nutritionist and they have insite as well. I highly recommend seeing a nutritionist if you can. Its been a great asset to our family.

I would recommend that you follow the advise of your pediatrian. I, like Nadine carry a multivitamin for children but we recommend starting them at age two. I believe that most physicians also make that recommendation. I might recommend nutritional supplements if your child had health issues.

If you are interested in a great multiple go check out the Isotonix line of kids vitamins. Isotonix are the best on the market because they have no preservatives, additives, binders or fillers. They are also highly absorable so you are not wasting your money. Your child will love the great flavor and you do not have to worry about the sugar content because one serving is equivalent to eating one grape.

go to www.cprnetmarketing.com and so a search for Might-A-Mins. We also carry probiotics for children. This is part of our Spectrum line for children with neurological disorders or for children that have ADHD or ADD.

We have always giving our children vitamins. Not necessarily every day but especially when another one in the house is sick or during the heat of the sick season in the winter. Even when they were on formula. But really watch what type of vitamins you give them. Flintstones don't do much good. Gummie vitamins are useless: the body doesn't absorb them. We love and use Shaklee vitamins for over 25 years. Really read what vitamins you choose make sure they are approved and don't have lots of additives.

Now I wouldn't give him vitamins along side of formula everyday. In fact he doesn't even need to be on formula anymore at all. and remember that you CAN have too many vitamins and that is not good. That is why we don't give them to our kids everyday. When they are sick, or others sick, when they have one of their "I don't want to eat anything except crackers...phase", and when we travel.

It is great that you are thinking about these things for your son!!

Hi, R..

It's great that you're wondering about this. I went through the same dilemma. So, the general idea with vitamins is that it is a "supplement" to their regular diet. A child that is on formula is getting a balanced diet through their formula. A child that is on food/formula is still probably getting enough nutrition from the formula.

I believe a supplement would be a good choice for a child that is not on formula, but milk only AND is a picky eater. If a child is getting enough nutrition in their regular diet (balanced meals with a variety of fruits/veggies, a "supplement" is not necessary).

That said, a vitamin is probably not going to hurt them. Some are fat soluble and some are water soluble, and if the body doesn't need it, most vitamins will be excreted in the urine anyhow.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Candice's post. Vitamins are not going to increase your son's appetite. I think you posted a request about how to get him to eat better recently too, right? Offer him nutritionally rich foods (steamed veggies, lean well-cooked but not fried meats, cheeses, yogurt, fruits), whole milk, and be a good example for him. I notice that our girl loves vegetables that my husband and I both love because she sees us eating them alongside her... that is SO important! We never need to do a "separate" meal for her at this point, she eats what we eat (she's almost 2.5 now).

We give our daughter vitamins only on occasion, like when there's a cold going around (my husband and I both work in schools) or we've been traveling, etc. I have never heard that they help with appetite.

There was a study recently that said the majority of kids in the US who take vitamins don't really need them... but the kids in the US who really need them (the ones whose parents feed them fast food instead of REAL food--and there are many reasons for this, mainly socio-economical/educational so I'm not judging here) don't get them. If you are conscientious about what you feed your child, and make sure to offer a variety of nutritious foods--he probably doesn't need them.

Yes, by all means take vitamins. All vitamins are is nutrients that the baby or kids need. They may or may not be getting this in their foods. Make sure they are natural and not synthetic. Bodies cannot assimulate synthetic vitamins and therefore you will be wasting your money. People who use Shaklee have found that their kids don't get sick very often if ever. My grandchild takes Shaklee vitamins. Shaklee not only has integrity but scientific knowledge.

There are a lot of vitamins out there but be careful because most of them have lead - according to the FDA. Here is the website: Go to http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/pbvitami.html

Lead stays in the brain (most have heard of why no more lead paint) and is very difficult to remove and actually costs lots of $ to remove.

To learn more visit www.shaklee.net/a_leading_edge. Shaklee just came out with several new baby and kids product. They are awesome.
