Hi there. Is anyone aware of one's ability to waive/postpone the Vitamin K shot and antibiotic wipes that are given to infants hours after birth? I heard Beaumont will not allow you to waive these. In fact I heard they will call child protective services if you do. I know Bon Secors allows you to. Anyone know for sure about Beaumont or St. Johns or have any info about it?

What can I do next?

I had my children at Providence Hospital in Southfield in the birthing center and last a C-section and asked for no drops and they did it. No questions asked. My first 2 had the antibiotics and got eye problem and duct issues my last 2 didn't and their eyes stayed beautiful and clean!!!

D. - You definitely have the right to waive/postpone the Vitamin K shot - and with good reason! I work with a midwife/doula that can probably help you with those questions. Her name is Wendy Pinter and her web address is www.nineshortmonths.com - give her a call. Sorry I can't give you more info, but hopefully this points you in the right direction.

Just another Government interference! Read up on Vitamin K, the dosage infants receive and the lifelong side effects. I think Child Protective Services should be called ON THEM. I don't know what the rules are, sorry!. But I have to think you do have a choice and can sign a waiver for both. Good Luck!

You would be putting your baby at risk for a brain hemorrhage

I delivered at St. John (and loved it) and I am almost positive you can waive it but you have to sign before the baby is born. I didn't know a hospital could tell you that you had to do it.

If this is what you want, you should do research before making your final decision. I came across this website
http://www.womens-health.co.uk/vitk.asp
which I think is informative. Go to a search engine (Google) and only look at credible sources, such as .edu .gov etc. Good luck in your decision!

Hi, I work at Crittenton and I know that if you sign a refusal form we will not administer these medications to your infant. Also, it is usually given within the first 1 - 1.5 hrs after delivery so you need to sign the consent before baby is born. Just call their L&D unit and ask what their policy is on that. They can't call CPS for that; it's your right as a parent.

We waived everything at Providence (except for the prick of blood that they take). I had to stand over them like a hawk and I never left my son out of site, but we successfully avoided all of that garbage.

Good luck!

We waived it all at Henry Ford Macomb, formerly St Joe's... you have the right, don't let anyone tell you you don't!! Now I don't know how many hoops Beaumont makes you jump through, but it is your right, it is just a matter of finding out how. I know we had a lot of problems with Beaumont and that is why we switched to Henry Ford!

Another note to make, like the previous reply, I also sent my husband in when they took the baby to the nursery and he had to be very staunch about no bottles, no water, no pacifier, no vitamins, etc... they talked about getting them like he wasn't there and he had to step in and say No I Don't Think So!!! So just know your rights and use them. It is your baby, this is America, no one can make you do anything.
