Visual Migraine - Home Remedies?

My daughter started getting visual migraines...vision gets spotty and speckeled - especially under stress or when exposed to bright light. Triggers include: lack of sleep, bright light, loud noise. Already talked to doctor, she suggested "Migrelief" herbal vitamin supplement. Just checking around for other possible remedies - preferably in the natural category.

MigreLief is a daily supplement that contains Riboflavin and Magnesium, two things that are shown to help reduce migraine frequency, particularly in people who are deficient of these things.

It also contains feverfew ,so if she is prone to plant allergies keep an eye on her reaction. Get the Children's version if you can. She can take Riboflavin and Magnesium separately if she has allergies.

When a migraine does come on, taking ibuprofen (unless medically contraindicated) as soon as she notices the aura starting and going to lay quietly in a dim/dark room until it passes will help. Keep a sleep mask in the car in case she needs it while you're on the road.

I get migraines - sometimes mine start as visual. My husband gets purely visual ones without pain.

He takes ibuprofen when he starts to notice his vision go, and that takes care of it. He sits in a dark room and waits the 10 minutes or so (sometimes 20) until the ibuprofen takes effect. That does the trick.

I know that's not a natural remedy, however it's effective for him.

Does she drink a lot of water? Sometimes migraines can come about from not being hydrated enough. Also for girls/women around hormonal changes.

Magnesium is said to help for some people. Sometimes dietary changes help. Look up triggers for migraines - for some it's caffeine, for some it's chocolate, etc. She could keep a log and see what she ate/drank/water consumption just before.

It's not just bright lights for most people. Some types of lighting will do it (for me, fluorescent).

If it's hormonal (Pms) then getting sleep, wearing sunglasses, and even making sure she avoids noise/being in over-stimulating environments can help.

Mine tend to be triggered by big temperature / pressure changes in the spring and fall.
Excedrin Migraine usually takes the edge off for me but if that doesn't work then I rotate heating pad and cool pad on my head.

I'm not sure what to do for visual migraines except to work against each trigger.
Get plenty of sleep, make sure she has sun glasses and maybe ear plugs too.

My son has had ocular migraines in the past. The doctor wanted to put him on some STRONG meds - we said no - since he was 10 years old. Our pediatrician and my sister who is a pharmacist said those were POTENT drugs with horrible side-effects for a pre-teen boy.

We ensure he has sunglasses and that stress levels are low.

I have been a migraine sufferer all my life and there is no real magic at home to help them but I did find if I drank some coca-cola it helped and passed this on to others who have them. The trigger watch helps, but sometimes they just happen: when I asked my neurologist why I got them he said, Because you get migraines! I so empathize with your daughter.
