Viral Throat Infection (Toddler)

Hey everyone. My son is 2 1/2 and was just diagnosed with a viral throat infection. His throat is red, has blisters and pockets of pus. The strep test came back negative. The doctor suggested ibuprofin every 6 hours to help with the throat swelling, but no antibiotics were prescribed.

Anyone have any home remedies for this? Or any experience/advice?

** Also he has been getting hives and the dr. said that it is caused by the infection. The hives come and go. Does anyone have any experience with hives during an illness?

What can I do next?

I agree about the warm liquids and honey, Honey naturally inhibits bacteria so hopefully will keep a secondary infection at bay so he doesn't need antibiotics in the future. Make sure he gets as much rest as possible (I knot this has to be hard if he is miserable.

LEMON!!! :) Make him a virgin hot toddy. Nice warm water, lemon juice and honey. He'll appreciate it.

Is the doctor positive this isn't an allergic reaction to something?
I would give Benadryl and see if it got better.
And just in case it is a yeast type problem... feed him yogurt.

Its perfectly normal for kids to get a rash/hives with a virus. My oldest used to get them every time he had a stomach bug my youngest gets them with colds. Prescribing antibiotics for viral infections does nothing but contribute to the over use of them.

I agree with the hot toddy recommendation as well as warming his apple juice or any other juices. Make sure they're just warm, not hot. It will soothe his throat and feel much better to swallow. If he hasn't already, now is the time to introduce him to chicken noodle soup, jello, pudding and yogurt. The ibuprofen is VERY important! My house is dealing with strep -I just got my first diagnosis this morning after almost 41 strep-free years! I feel for your little one because swollen, sore, pus-filled throats are truly agonizing. The warm stuff and ibuprofen does help immensely. Does he gargle yet? My oldest was gargling at 2 1/2 and understood to spit, but my youngest doesn't get gargling yet, and he's currently 2 1/2. IF your son will gargle and spit, give him some warm salt water to gargle. That will also help. It also won't be the end of the world if he swallows a little either.

Also -IF he gargles and spits and you can count on him to do it, ask the pediatrician for "Magic Mouthwash." It's a prescription of lidocaine, and I think she told me something nuts like mylanta and another over-the-counter. It's very sweet, but it numbs the mouth and throat for awhile. HOWEVER, due to the lidocaine, it's dangerous if he swallows it in any quantity ( a little is okay), but he can't gulp his sip down instead of gargling. Only ask for this if he truly is gargling and spitting. You could also try Chloraseptic spray. It deadens as well and I grew up with that getting sprayed in my mouth constantly!

Hi, i am not writing to suggest that you use these or no. That is your call. I am simply telling you the names of natural antibiotics. Echinecea, Goldenseal, or a combo of both are great antibiotics. I spent years on tetracycline for cystic acne, once i learned, i stopped taking the chemicals and incorporated the natural!
Greatest of luck to you! I know the stress of not feeling like you are helping someone you love enough, but, let that go, you are a great mom!
