I went for my 38th week check up today. The Dr said I was 1 cm dilated and 80% effaced. I have not been having contractions. Any experience on when I might go into labor?

What can I do next?

I am a firm believer they come out the way they go in... go for a long walk, take a nice hot bath and have sex....

Unfortunately, it could still be a couple weeks. But it could be tonight too! You just NEVER know with those babies! There truly is no way to know for sure.

I had a friend that took castor oil with a couple of her pregnancies and it put her in labor each time........ However, I chose to cut our HUGE yard with a push mower when I was 38/39 weeks pregnant and NOTHING! LOL.

2 weeks give or take around the due date is perfectly normal. I stayed at 3 cm dilated for most of my 36 hrs labor. The last 5 or so hours everything moved along. Every birth is different.

Sorry....no help here...I wasn't dilated AT ALL and less than 50% effaced when I went into labor. 12 hours later I was two centimeters. Luckily, it progressed pretty quickly after that.

lol. You sound just like me. I just had my baby June 9th 2010 and I was the same way. Honestly.... this is probably not what you want to hear but it will happen when it is supposed to happen.

For me, It happened on the one day I DIDN'T want it to happen. the Friday before the 9th my husbands grandmother died and the funeral was scheduled for the 9th. On the 7th I was 39 weeks pregnant I practically begged the doctors to induce me so that we could go to the funeral which was 3 hours away. Sure enough, they said no. And since I was not having any contractions or any signs of labor I just thought screw it, it hasn't happened yet, there's no way its going to happen the day of the funeral. and sure enough... my water broke and started leaking the morning of while we were getting ready to leave.

The funny thing is, I almost considered not even telling my husband and going to the funeral anyways... But I am glad I didn't because once my water broke it was only a matter of hours before my daughter was here.

The moral of the story is... just be patient. Try to enjoy these last 2-3 weeks and get as much sleep as possible. You will miss it once the baby gets here. My baby is 2 weeks old now and I feel like I haven't slept in weeks. Otherwise, I hope all goes well with your delivery and that you have a healthy and happy baby.

Again, good luck and be patient. Its doesn't get any easier once your not pregnant anymore. (Just more cute ;D)

Would be nice if it were that easy! Since we are all so different, theres no way of knowing. I was 2cm dialated for 2 weeks before my due date (May 12th) and nothing else happened so I was induced on May 17th in the evening. Hope its sooner rather than later for your sake! I know you'd like that baby out!! Hang in there and get as much rest as possible...(I know, not easy when you are anxious OR 9 mos along...lol...but seriously...hang in there!)

At any time. Seriously.

I had DS (2) at 38.5 weeks. I went in one day for a check up, and I was dialated to 1, fully effaced, but showing no other signs of progress.

12 hrs later I was in full blown labor, and 24 hrs later I had a baby!
It can happen that fast, and that was my first child. Hang in there! I'm 32 weeks right now and BEGGING to have this kid sooner than later. But at the end of the day, there's not much you can do but wait.

Sounds great. Just be glad your body knows it's supposed to have a baby. Don't rush things before your due date. And heck, your baby might even be late! It doesn't really mean anything. There's no science. Just be packed and be ready for baby to come. Labor starts out pretty slowly most time, so don't be anxious. Everything will go well!

I was 3 cm dilated for a month, and 90% effaced when I finally went in and got induced the day before my due date. It could be tomorrow, it could be in 2 weeks.

I feel for you! I have been having contractions for a few weeks now and I am just hitting 41 weeks. I am 1 cm, 50% I thought FOR SURE I was going into labour on a few occasions, but nope! As my midwife says, they come when ready.
I was induced with my first and it was very difficult so I am doing my best to hang in until this one is ready. It's the only advice I can give- just hang on! I know it's tough, the waiting. Just keep living life like you have weeks to go or you might go crazy with the waiting!

Good Luck to you and your new bundle of love!
