Since the birth of my second baby (19 months ago) i have very heavy periods. I am bf so i didn't start menstrating again until march of this year. I had a vaginal birth with my 1st and an emergency c-section with my second. I also had my tubes tied. Has anyone experiences this after havinf their tubes tied? Is it something that comes with that? My periods are not painful anymore after having kids but very heavy now for about 3 days. They are regular. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this before i go to the doctor. My annual exam is in june so i was going to wait til then. I don't had a history of female problems. The doctor did remove a begnign fibroid tumor during the c-section.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks moms!! I do feel that this is normal now. I'm glad i'm not the only one this is happening to. I didn't even think about the pill. I was on the pill for about 6 years and i remember now that it does lessen your periods. Now that i am not on it i guess i am going to have heavier periods. At least i don't have cramps anymore. One of the many great things about having babies!! I will discuss it with my doctor on my next visit. Thanks again!

T.,
I am also a 2-time mom (both c-sections) who had a tubal ligation. I never had heavy or painful periods until after the tubal. I have been told that it is pretty common afterward, although I don't really recall hearing that beforehand (don't think it would have stopped me though... I knew I was finished after 2 kids). I have VERY heavy periods now and quite a bit more of PMS. Now, I would also wonder about the fibroids since I've heard that can cause pain and heavy bleeding. I guess no pain is good, but the heavy bleeding could be a result of either the tubal or the fibroids.
Like you said, I'd bring it up at my annual but not worry unless I started getting really bad cramping or some other sign that something is wrong. Were you on the pill at all before you had kids? I was at different times, and obviously had lighter periods because of it. Getting used to that after the tubal was also tough... I was kind of used to short, light periods.
Anyway, my point is, yes, I'm in the same boat and have been told it's normal. I've also been given the opportunity by my GYN to go on the pill for 3-6 months to see if it would help regulate things, reduce flow, and limit PMS. Apparently that helps to 'reset' the clock, so to speak. I haven't done it yet, but it may still be a possibility.
Good luck and best wishes!

Hi T.,
I also have heavy periods now that I have had 2 children. I'm bf also and even so, with both births, I got my period back within 2 months. The periods started out more heavy than they are now but still they're heavier than they ever were before my pregnancy. I also get them a bit more frequently whereas before they were every 28 days almost religeously. It doesn't bother me too much so I never bothered to ask the doc. Sorry, no answers here just wanted to let you know you're not alone.
Good luck,
A. M

I am 25, married with 2 girls one is 4yrs old and the other is 2yrs old. I understand how you feel. after having my second child I also got my tubes tie and now I have very heavy flow and the cramps are out of this world. I don't know what to do for it. I feel that everything is very natural and nothing to really worry about. I hope you feel better and have a great weekend. bye

I also experienced heavy periods after my second baby (both were C-section). Although I had my tubes tied, I talked to my doctor and went back on the pill for a few months (after I finished breastfeeding) and it had helped a tremendously. I urge you to at least call the nurse at your doctors office and see what they recommend (either coming in early or waiting until your annual). Bottom line, if it bothers you enough (to post) then you probably should get an appointment.

I too got much heavier periods after having children. I had only vaginal births and had no tubes tied, so I believe this has more to do with having babies than having cesaereans or tubes tied.

I too had a C-section and tubes tied after my second child. Were you breastfeeding? I had no periods for 6 months after birth because of the nusrsing. Until she weaned at 3yrs, my periods were so light while I was nursing. Now that she weaned my periods are heavy. I was concerned. Turns out that's normal for me. I miss the lite periods. Good Luck.

So I'm a little late, but still wanted to put in my 2 cents...haha.

Anyway, when my friend was done having kids, she had her uterus cauterized. They burn the lining of your uterus and you will never have a period again! But you still have all your "female" parts, so it doesn't mess with your hormones. Though it is not reversible, so it is a big decision to make. I think when I'm done having kids, I'm going to go this way. My periods were so bad after I started having kids, I wanted it all removed! 8 days heavy if for the birds!

Hey T.,

I don't know the cause, but I have had a few heavy periods lately, and had my tubes tied almost 3 years ago. I am almost 40, so that could be the cause, and my periods are getting a little weird (somewhat irregular, but even out to just about every 6 weeks). But, I do not have the fibroids. And as a nurse, I do know that fibroids can cause heavy bleeding and even anemia. So, if you continue to have a heavy period, let your doctor know so he can at least order a hemoglobin/hematocrit to see if you are anemic. There are some simple (blood tests) to determine this, and if so, then the doctor can order more invasive testing if needed. But, if you are concerned, please do not hesitate to let your doctor know.

Hi T.,

I've had a similar experience. My periods used to be very consistent at 4 days long and fairly light. After my second child, born via c-section, and having my tubes tied, my period now runs pretty heavy for 6-7 days. I've talked to a few other women who have had the same experience having their tubes tied as well. So, I'm thinking it's pretty common. I also don't have an annual until the summer, but there are no other symptoms other than heavier and longer flow.

Good Morning T. B:
I have three teenagers and had all of them vaginally and had my tubes tied after my third child. Since then I have always had a heavy menestral cycle. My youngest is 15 now. My cycle lasts about 7days and I have asked the Dr. about the heavy flow and she told me that it is a natural thing for women to experience after tubaligations due to the "cleaning out process. with you not having cramps and such, i would not worry too much. Just Know if you feel uncomfortable do not be afraid to ask the Dr. it is their job to tell you everything.I have also learned not to take Ibuprofen during my menestral cycle due to there is an ingredient that thin out blood which causes the blood flow to be heavier. I stick strictly with tylenol or midol for pain during my cycle. I try to limit my caffiene intake during my cycle and always drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.Even though I have changed some of my habits through the years during my cycle I still have a heavy and longer flow and I do believe it is a natural thing to happen after childbirth especially after having multiple children and I do believe it is natural after tubaligations. i sometimes experience passing clots and I asked the Dr. about that and she told me that it too is natural. I am 38 years old and my kiddos are 18,16,and 15. I hope I helped you relax a little. I hope I've helped you and have a great weekend and may God bless and keep you and yours.
