Hi Moms,

Is it bad to put Vaseline on your face (or anywhere on your body)? I know it contains mineral oil. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Vaseline is horrible. I would never put it on my skin anywhere, especially my face. It is made from crude oil. I prefer coconut oil, which is actually healing, antimicrobial, rich in nutrients, and all around good for you! I run screaming from Vaseline! (Okay, not really, but close! LOL)

I have heard interviews with models ("older" women who still look fabulous!)who swear by this to keep their skin looking so young and wrinkle free.

Here is a page from www.ewg.org (environmental working group) and their skin deep database of skin care products and the toxicity of differing chemicals in those products,

Since it is a petroleum based product, I don't think I would. I'm not sure if I remember this correctly, but vaseline works by creating an impermeable barrier to prevent moisture loss. It does not penetrate the skin to provide hydration. So, kind of depends on what you need. Hope this helps. Good luck, D.

I would NEVER use it, ESPECIALLY on your face!! As another mother said, it is made from crude oil.....like putting motor oil on your body or face! It is just processed a little more so it isn't the came color and is thicker than what you put in your car.

Use OLIVE OIL!!! (EVOO) You probably already have some. It is WONDERFUL for your skin, and completely safe if you get it in your mouth. :)

Vaseline is completely safe, but as the others said, it can clog pores. I wouldn't use it on myself for that reason, but have frequently used it on my two childrens' faces and bodies (on the recommendation of my pediatrician) for both dry skin / eczema and for healing minor cuts and scrapes.

i put it on my daughter's face and trunk almost nightly. her dr told me to, because of her dry skin. she has excema. it is really greasy and clogs the pores though, so if you are prone to acne at all, you will probably break out... Good luck

It's perfectly safe. You may prefer Aquaphor, though. Somehow the texture of it is a little less greasy. I used it as a diaper cream for both of my kids (worked GREAT) and I use it as a lip balm, as well as on my hands, elbows, and heels in cold weather.

Whole Foods Market and Sunflower Market have a petroleum-free vaseline that you can purchase. I actually like the consistency more because it is not as think as the regular vaseline that you get at the grocery store. I think you can put regular vaseline on your skin but I don't know how good it is for you so you may not want to make it a regular habit.

I live in MN and winters here are brutal on my face. The thin skin around my eyes gets really dry so i put vaseline around my eyes and it takes the dryness away after a few nights of using it. Im pretty sure its safe since I put it near my eyes and have never had a problem. I also put it on my toddlers cheeks when he goes outside in the winter to prevent chaffing.

i keep vaseline by my nightstand, works great overnight on chapped lips or dry hands. i have used it as an eye makeup remover. i also recently went through a bout with a HORRIBLE allergic breakout on my hands and vaseline pulled me through it when other hand lotions burned. it is very mild and doesn't irritate. i would not put it on my face due to clogging pores like others have said. but it definitely has its uses. it would not have been around so long if not. yes if you are super freaky about all natural etc, it may not be for you. i personally prefer it to some of the all natural "green" lotions i have tried.

I remember Doris Day used Vaseline every day when she went to bed. It was what she put on her face every night after cleaning it. I believe it was her "Miracle" youth cream.

Skin gets dry because the moisture evaporates. The barrier keeps your natural moisture in your skin.
