Vasectomy Issues

First I have told him to call his doctor and he has, he is waiting on them to return his call.

That being said he had the vasectomy almost two weeks ago and he is still in more pain than I think he should be. He still cringes when you get near him and oh my if you bump him. He ices every day when he get home. Now I know this is a very sensitive area, but I would have thought that by now these issues would have lessened.

He also has a small knot above the incision. It doesn't hurt, but you can feel it. The stiches have all healed nicely.

My husband normally has a high pain tolerance and is not normally a complainer. He is very physically active and has not been able to resume those activities either, so I believe his complaints are valid.

Has anyone else's husbands taken this long for recovery?

What can I do next?

The knot is more then likely normal, you can still feel a small knot were they clamped my husbands tubes shut and it has been over 5 years now. But the pain is concerning, my husband was up and fine in a day, back to work on Monday (had it done on a Friday). It was smart to call the doctor.

My husband was a total baby about his vasectomy, too. He didn't listen to the doctor and ice the area right away like we was told to because "it's fine" and then he swelled up to the size of a grapefruit. Not even kidding. So then bruising ensued, and it took probably 3 weeks for him to feel okay again. Note that I did not say "normal" because I don't even care how high of a pain threshold a man thinks he has, he is going to whine and complain like crazy about a vasectomy. Guaranteed. ;) I did point out to him that I didn't complain nearly as much about pushing two 8-pound humans out of my girl parts, and the subsequent episiotomy/tearing stitches; he was unimpressed. Evidently the three tiny incisions on "the boys" were FAR worse. LOL His doctor DID tell him that some men have an extra-tough layer of muscle (or something?) down there, and for those men, they are going to be in more pain afterward. So your husband and mine must be in that lucky club.

Anyway, unless there is heat or oozing, or he's running a fever, he is probably fine.

I don't mean to sound cavalier - but is it more pain that when you had stitches from your episiotomy? (JK)

Really the doctor is the only one who can properly answer this question. If there's any kind of infection it will be tender especially if he gets jostled around. Does he wear his pants tight or lose? boxers or briefs? I would think the tighter the clothing the more likely he'd be irritating the stitches. Has he tried using ointment like neosporin?

My husband had surgery to repair an umbilical hernia about a year after I had our second child via c-section because he was 10 lbs and 22.5 inches long and his chin was presenting instead of the top of his head. I got very little sympathy and help from my husband during the weeks following. BUT - when he had a 2 inch incision near his belly button you'd have thought he had open heart surgery. Most men are babies - which is why God made women the child-bearers. ;o)

When my husband had his he was a baby too. Yes, they have high pain tolerances, but that's because they don't remember anything happening to that region of their body before. I'm sure he is fine, but the doctor will know for sure.

And yes, my husband took a few days off of work and was icing it for over a week after.

It's possible he has an infection of some sort. My hubby developed some pain after feeling fine after his vasectomy and the doc brought him right in to check for infection. (Fortunately there was no infection and the pain was completely unrelated to the vasectomy). And while I agree that men can often be bigger babies about things, to be in this much pain two weeks after the procedure is not normal. Most feel much better the next day and resume regular activities three days later. I'd put a call in to the doctor and insist on getting things checked.

After 2 weeks my husband still had pain and thought he should feel better. He went back to doc, no infection, and got the ok to take ibuprofen. After that he felt better and finally after about 3 weeks or so I think he was back to himself. The icing I think just helps swelling, not the pain. Is he taking anything for the pain? I say if there is question he should have it checked out but know that mine did take a little longer to recover. I know some that were up and moving within a day or 2. They all are different.

My ex-husband was back to normal after 3 days - and he had his done on a Friday - and iced Friday, Saturday and Sunday...was back to work and playing sports on Monday. He was still tender - but overall - good.

If it's been two weeks - yep - I would be concerned too. What kind of pain is he having? Just generalized pain or specific - pulling? searing?

Since I've had a full hysterectomy - my husband does not need to get a vasectomy! :)

Sorry he's still in pain!! Hope the doctor calls back today!

yeah, he should be nearly 100% by now, he def needs to check in with a physician. my husband had a hydrocele(sp?), but they were also concerned about some other condition when he went back in due to pain/swelling lasting longer than normal. hope he feels better soon!

That does not sound normal. My dad had a vasectomy years ago, and within two days, he was ready to golf again. He only took a few days off work, and he would have went back sooner if the doctor had said it was okay. Within a week, it was as if they never operated, and my dad is a big baby when it comes to pain.

That sounds pretty long. Should be healing by now. Should go to his doctor NOW.

Haven't read your answers. DH had one years ago along with another surgery to check a lump on his testicle. Thankfully, the lump turned out to be scar tissue, but he ended up basically having one testicle pulled out of the sack from INSIDE his body and squished through an incision made on his pubic bone and then squished back into place - if you can even imagine that. Horrible doctor, but I digress.

DH had some kind of titanium clips used as part of the vasectomy. THOSE caused him discomfort/pain for a long long time. He had to go up a size in underwear and pants to give everything enough room. He eventually was ok but it took a very long time. Had I thought of it, I would have gone with him for the consultation beforehand. PS - DH is NOT a baby when it comes to pain at all, so I know for sure it was real pain, not "poor me" pain.
