Hi everyone, I'm 8 months pregnant with my 2nd, and around 5-6 months into it, I got horrible varicose veins, my one leg looks like a giant bruise. I'm just wondering does it go away after you have the baby or is surgery in my future. I'm 27 yrs old and I feel so self conscious, I hate wearing shorts. If you gals can give me some advice. Thanks

What can I do next?

I recommend getting the compression stockings too. They will help with the circulation in your legs. I had the varicose veins in my first pregnancy and after baby was born they did not go away. The veins got worse and were very painful. I ended up having to have them removed in one leg. The surgery and recovery went well. I was up and about back to myself in a couple days. I still have to wear the compression stockings occasionally when my legs start to hurt. I'm in my third pregnancy now and haven't had the veins get as worse as they did with the first. The stockings that my doctor prescribed cost over $100 but well worth it.

Hi A., Congratulations on your second child! I had some gnarly VVs behind my left knee courtesy of my second pregnancy, too. My mother and grandmother both have vein issues and I was worried they were there to stay. Very painful and painful to look at :/ My doctor prescribed the stockings and I wore them most days. (Btw, they are a CHALLENGE to get on- but don't despair- they truly help) I'm happy to say that after my daughter's birth, they disappeared 95%. I still have a very small bulging vein behind the knee (6 years later). But it hasn't gotten worse and that burning pain is gone. Good luck and go buy some stockings :)

After the pregnancy, all the extra pressure is gone. It would get somewhat better.
BUT you need to get compression hose (stockings from a medical pharmacy- $50) NOW.... and wear them whenever you are really on your feet.
As the pregnancy pregresses ,,, these get worse... and then it's even less likely that these would go away. Any doctor would tell you to get these ... go to your family Dr. or your OB..... If they write an RX for the stockings then it should even be covered by insurance.

I have a similar experience and opted to see a vascular surgeon after the babies..... The whole process is pretty simple.... there are a few options, and it all depends on what your situation is. I didn't have any surgery needs... I think you might find that laser or slerotherapy(injections) is enough to solve your issue.... you might call it horrible vericose veins, and the Dr. might think dfferently. This sort of thing is not likely covered under insurance. However, my diagnosis/vein testing was covered.
These days, I forgot all about how I used to hate my legs in shorts..
As I said before......get the stockings now!!! ... I mean TODAY. go go go.

I didnt read any of the other responses but here is mine. the veins in your body have little door ways on them that let blood in and out (think of it like a latch system on a damn) sometimes those doors refuse to open and collapse and dont let blood out, this is a varisoe vein. the only way to get rid of them is surgery. varicose veins dur to pregnancy are very common and a few of them is no problem, but being over weight of being in constant positions that restict blood flow can cause them. my mom had to have varicose vein surgery twice because she had so many of them and was at risk for the pooling blood to break off and send a clot to her heart. I can also tell you that like stretch marks varicose veins are less noticiable the tanner your skin is.

With my second pregnancy I was carrying triplets and got a nasty area of vericose veins in one leg. I used the compression stockings for the rest of the pregnancy and those helped the veins from getting worse. After the babies were born, the swelling of the veins went down a quite a bit, but they're still there. Like you, I don't like wearing shorts in public anymore because of the veins (plusI have tons of spider veins). I think some day I will look into surgery. My mother-in-law had the surgery done on both of her legs (one at a time) and has been very happy with the results.
