Vacuum Recommendation? - El Paso,TX

Hi girls! I'm looking for a new vacuum. My wishlist: upright, on the quieter side (since my little guy can only tolerate it if he's on my hip), HEPA filter, easy to maneuver, works great. Do any of you have a vacuum like this that you recommend? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much! From your recs and hubby's research, we opted for the Dyson Animal ball. I had to pry it away from him, so already worth the investment. We bought it from Best Buy and used a coupon we found online so got it for 425. Most other places advertise 520, so look around. The pros: it is very maneuverable, my carpet feels softer (psychological?), and there is no after-vacuum-smell, and it picked up a TON. Things I would chang: still a bit louder than I was hoping for and wish the cord was longer, otherwise thrilled! Thanks so much!

I had a bagless vacuum and I absolutely hated it. I just bought a Hoover U5140-900 Tempo Widepath. It got really good ratings on Consumer Reports. You can buy it on Amazon.com for $79 and that includes refill bags and a replacement belt. Don't know how it works, but I trust Consumer Reports.

They are pricey but I suggest a Dyson. Totally worth the money and will last a long time...much longer than a less expensive one for sure. We have two boys, two shedding dogs, and my dirty husband...all of us with allergies... and it works great!

I just bought an Oreck XL a few weeks ago and we really love it. We have all ceramic tile downstairs and all carpet upstairs, so I went with the one that has a button on the handle to switch between hard floors and carpet. I can't believe how much stuff it picks up! It works better than any other vacuum I've had. It is super-light at 9 lbs. I decided to go with a bagged vacuum rather than a bagless because I have a cat and a dog and REALLY bad allergies. The research I did said that the bagless ones, even if they say HEPA, shoot a ton of dust into the air. So I knew that wasn't for me. I thought about Dyson but it didn't seem to have great reviews, so for about the same money I am very satisfied with my Oreck. One note: The Oreck doesn't have on-board tools (which I love--I always hated the fact that they were constantly falling off my old vacuum) b/c the manufactureres believe that directing the airflow to the tools causes the vacuum to have less power and suction. So, I bought the Oreck hand-held in addition to my upright, and I love it, too. It has a very long extention and an attachment that allows me to do my 2-story ceiling fan (I stand on the ottoman), b/c it is so small and light and has a shoulder strap so you just carry it around with you. It also does mini-blinds, and I use it in my bedroom b/c I have so many nooks and crannies that are hard to get to with the regular upright. I'm very happy with both units! Good luck!

LOVE love love my Dyson- but they are pricey. However, they last - better than spending $100 every year for 4 years- drop $400 and it lasts!!! Also love my Roomba, but it is better for smaller or more enclosed spaces. But surprisingly it REALLY cleans. I love that it goes all the way under my bed where the dog crawls to sleep but no regular vacuum can get to! I've had an Oreck but not that impressed with them and no attachments unless you get the higher end model- and for that money I would definitely go w/ the Dyson and save yourself the hassle of bags. Good luck! (Oh! And I have 3 kids,a Golden Retriever with allergies that sheds an INCREDIBLE amount and three cats- so any vacuum at our house gets a THOROUGH work out- we could be a vacuum testing center!)

I am on my second Hoover Wind Tunnel and love it. It is self propelled. The suction is great and it has on board tools. I tried a friends Dyson and didn't like it at all. With her Dyson you had to put pieces of the handle together every time you wanted to vacume. I have a bagged vacume because I do not want to have to deal with emptying a canister. My last Wind Tunnel was third hand and when it would break I just took it to a vacume shop and they would repair it for a few bucks. I have had that one for six years myself. I don't know how long the people before me had it and it still works great. I only bought a new one because we moved to a second home and one in both places.

I love my Dyson. I have the original model but the purple one for pet hair. It's not any quieter than other vacuums but it does have a hepa filter and works better than any other vacuum I've ever had!

You may want to go look at the Dyson ball, it's a more maneuverable upright model, it may be quieter I'm not sure. I'm sure it works as great as the other Dyson models!

uggh - i just spent months researching my next vac after my dyson broke - i did love my dyson, if you can afford $400, which i cannot at the time.
so i went to wal mart and bought the eureka petvac for $82 and i was not expecting much at that price - boy was i wrong. this thing is so powerful it sucks itself along the floor, it has the power paw, so i you have pets it gets the hair off easily, also the extendible feather duster so you can do the ceiling fans, then it sucks the dust off when you put it back in its holder. easy to empty canister, plus the hose is pull out and use - no having to put it all together first.
it is about as noisy as any others - my duaghter got used to it quickly.

I have been very happy for the past 8+ years with my Rainbow bagless vacuum cleaner. This is a canister style vacuum which uses water as the dirt filter instead of a bag. We have had the motor serviced only once! Well worth the investment! Great suction, no filters to buy (or to throw away or replace), and low maintenance.

I guess if I had to buy a replacement today, since I don't know where I could get a new Rainbow, I would seriously look at a Dyson. The previous responders have positive recommendations for it. http://www.dyson.com/homepage.asp

Oh, I found a website for the Rainbow vacuums: http://www.rainbowsystem.com/

Happy shopping!

Love my Dyson (animal). Picks up hair very well. We don't have pets, but I shed hair almost like an animal. We used to have a Kirby. For over a year, I had been mentioning to my husband that I wanted a Dyson. One weekend, he got up and went and purchased it for me. That same day, I vacuumed the living room with my Kirby. When he got home with the Dyson, I re-vacuumed the same room and you should have seen all the hair the Dyson picked up even after I had vacuumed with the Kirby. Love the fact that you don't have to deal with bags, which were expensive for the Kirby vacuum. It is a more expensive vacuum, but my family and I are worth it!! :)

Be Blessed,
E.
