Does anyone know of a good vacuum that is safe on hardwood floors? We have two cats, so we need something that really works to pick up the hair but is not too h*** o* the floors. Thanks!

my house has all hardwoods (except for the tile in the bathrooms), and I love my roomba! I have a cat and a dog...if you run it about every other day or so it does a fantastic job!

We use the Bissel Flip Vac. It vacuums & mops/dries. The one I got was $50, but they have a heavy duty one for $100. Suitable for wood floors. I have them. We use a dust mop, too if I just need a small area done, but the Bissell works great. Upgraded from the Swiffer vac to this.

I have a Miele canister for my wood floors. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and it doesn't blow the hair around as you try to vacuum it up. It also gets under furniture and beds easily. It is also recommended by allergy websites beacuse it has a hypoallergenic filter.

We have hardwood floors throughout our home and two cats.

I have a Roomba (robot vacuum) and it is awesome! Since we got it and because our little one has started to crawl, I vacuum every day. I just pick up the stuff off of the floor and press the start button and leave the house each morning to vacuum the living room and entry way area. When it is "done," it docks iteself and recharges. Then, when I come home, I set it in the dining room/kitchen area and turn it on again. Our floors are super clean. I just mop them once a week.

Roomba's can be quite expensive ($400+), but if you will watch www.woot.com... they often have them for under $200.

Hope this is helpful.

just raise the beater brush to a higher level before vacuuming your hardwoods. Other than the rolling wheels and weight of the vacuum being a problem (and i can imagine that a very heavy duty vacuum could be an issue) just raising that brush should help. i vacuum our bedroom hardwoods that way and have no trouble. and they are the kind with deep grooves between the boards...i hate them by the way! LOLOL with the brush raised (make sure it raises enough) you just have suction rather than beating of the brush too.

Dirt Devil makes an electric broom that might work for you. It comes in a variety of colors and cost around $40. They have a bunch on Amazon.com. Search for "dirt devil rechargeable broom vacuum" I hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless!

C. - Sears puts out a Kenmore brand vacuum called Magic Blue. It is a little blue canister with great suction! I can not live without mine! Ten years ago when we started taking care of my invalid m-i-l, we moved her and her "5" dogs into our home. I battle "hair", "fur balls", "dust bunnies", etc. on a daily basis. This little canister can be purchased with either an attachment for wood/ceramic/vinyl floors, or an attachment for carpet. I would not use the flooring attahment on carpet because it really stops up the suction. The suction is so great, I can do the job in minutes!

The Dyson is the BEST period. My mother has one cat and wood floors...she uses the All-purpose yellow one and I borrow it once a month so, my floor will really be clean! :) My poor vacuum is about to get kicked out because of the Dyson.

I don't have one, but my friend has the Roomba and loves it. It takes longer than a typical vacuum, but it goes by itself leaving you available for other activities. It is costly, but she said she would have paid double to have something work so well and give her the time to do other things. I use the Swiffer on my hardwoods and it picks up all of the dog hair and our dog sheds A LOT. I will probably get a Roomba when my current vacuum dies (I can't wait!).

Dyson's animal vacuum is awesome, just do your research to see if it covers hard wood floors. My friend has this one, and I have the regular Dyson, it may sound like I am exagerating, but seriously, we love it, and it has a floor function that I can switch to and use on my tile, it's fabulous! Did I say how great it was?

We have hardwood floors and 3 cats, but find that the vacuums are really on effective in corners and baseboards. I use a static dust mop and it works so much better. Any is good and its really quicker and easier that hauling out the vacuum every time.

Good luck!

I have a Bissell Total Floors Vacuum. It is great, can be used on carpet, as well as tile, wood floors, etc. I have 2 dogs and a cat so picking up hair is a must in my house. I have had it almost 2 years and have been VERY pleased. I got mine at Kohls on sale, plus an extra 30% off.

The swivel sweeper is a good cost effective choice. This is a cordless broom/vac. It is great for everyday messes. It rotates 360 degrees, so it is very easy to get in and around things. It has sliders on the bottom instead of wheels, so it is easy on the floor. You can find them at Wal-Mart, and I'm sure at Walgreens and CVS.

Good Luck

Hi C.! The Oreck vacuums are fantastic and work great on hardwood floors. They are expensive but you also get lifetime "tune-ups" with some of them for free and some of the others are annual "tune-ups" for seven years. I traded my mid-range Oreck in for the upper level and I cannot tell you how much I love it! My husband even vacuumed! Good luck!
