Vaccination - Adverse Reaction?

Hi everyone! I'm wondering if anyone's children or anyone they know have had an adverse reaction to a vaccination.... I'm wondering if my son has. Since April (when my son was 5 months old) he starting doing these "staring spells" - this is what the neurologist has finally called it as we have found NOTHING after MRI, blood tests, urine tests, 24 hour EEG, 1 hr EEG, hospitalization (3 days), spinal tap, etc. Nothing has shown up to say they are seizures - he will all of a sudden stare blankly and appear to hold his breath - his pupils dialate (one more than the other) - lasts about 30 seconds and then he goes limp and gets tired/cranky. There has never been a pattern and he can have a few a day then not anything at all for weeks. We've seen two neurologists, his pediatrician, and has been hospitalized. We are at a loss. A fellow mom in my moms group just gave me the idea that it is possible he could have been reacting to an immunization - could be a coincidence, but he had a flu booster on the 12th of December and had a couple of these episodes on the 22nd and again on Christmas eve (w/in the 15 days of the vaccination). Again, we've been told by the neurologist that "they're just breath holding spells and he'll grow out of them." - since nothing has ever shown up. Difference is - I've done research and typically breath holding spells follow either getting hurt, getting mad, crying spell, something - my sons do not - he could be eating, playing or just sitting on our lap and they've happened.

Has anyone had experience reporting an adverse reaction to VAERS - how does that work and does anything come of it - like do you hear back??

ANY help, prayers, etc. would be greatly appreciated - I feel so helpless!!!!!

What can I do next?

First and foremost, I am so sorry for your pain and frustration! You have already been through a lot! There is nothing worse than knowing something is wrong, but not knowing what it is...or why, and even worse...not being able to do anything to help the situation! My mother could probably relate more to you in this case than I, as I was the child with this condition. Although they've done the tests that they have, it may not have shown up due to his age?! He may have a type of epilepsy that causes petite mal seizures!? That is what I have/had. It happened much more often when I was a child then it does now, and I took medication for it when I was a child that seemed to cause it's own set of problems. I don't reccomend any of the meds they use to treat it!
From the childs perspective...they don't shake all over like you would think of when you think of seizure...they just sort of go blank for a minute and then they're back, and really tired. I remember my family calling my name to me...and then all of a sudden I'd snap out of it and be tired afterwards!
To be honest, I never even really knew what I had until I was 20 years old and in college...I had been taping a lecture, and while I was replaying it I noticed there was a whole minute of the lecture I don't remember hearing at all, and I was paying attention! Then it was again and again! When I brought it up to my mom she said that I was probably having a petite mal durring those times and then asked me if there were florescent lights in the class room, to which I replied yes...she said for everyone, the triggers are different...my triggers are florescent lights, strobe lights, and certain smells....they make me seizure, grow very tired and sometimes actually vomit! The key is to identify and avoid those triggers, he should have the episodes less as he matures into an adult!
It's hard to say what causes them, in my case I have family history with my Dad and Grandma...but if you notice it more after vaccines are administered...there may be a trigger in the vaccine, or it is possible the vaccine may be the cause!? More research would need to be done! Always take down the manufacturer information, exp. date and lot number for every vaccine you ever administer to your child, and when. That way if you wish to file a complaint, you have the proper information to do so. Your doctor should have the information you need, but don't rely on them to file the complaint, you will probably need to do that yourself!
Here is a website you can do that through, with more information you might find interesting regarding vaccines!

If it's any consolation, I have lived a very long, happy and successful life, not even knowing I had this problem...chances are your son will too! It's always harder on the parents than the child....the child doesn't know anything is different...so I wouldn't treat them as if they are, if it were me. When he gets a little older, like 4 or 5 I would have him re-evaluated by a child neurologist, if you wish to have a diagnosis...but I would definitly do my research before administering meds!! Esspecially Dilantin! That stuff is worse than the illness itself!
Feel free to email me if I can ever assist you in any way!
My situation may or may not apply to yours but it's all I know, I hope it has helped. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family in your search for answers! Take care! ~M.

Sorry I cannot comment on the adverse vaccine reaction part but if you suspect that then it would be foolish for him to have any more flu vaccines and you may want a slower vaccination schedule for him to help minimize any more seizure activity. My oldest son has a seizure disorder and what you are describing are absent seizures. It is possible that this would not show up on an EEG if one did not occur during the time of his EEG. You mentioned that he goes weeks without having one so the chances of him having one during an EEG are pretty slim. Please pm me if you are interested in seeing another pediatric neurologist because there are good ones and bad ones. I cannot comment on whether these potential seizures are occuring because of the vaccine but whatever the cause, the treatment would be the same. If untreated, these seizures may impact his development and lead to a lifetime seizure disorder. Please do not wait on this one and be sure to monitor him very closely at night in case something is occuring that you are not seeing from another room.

This sounds similar to the situation one of my tenants has with one of her daughters. She stares off into space, then just collapses. They determined a long time ago that she was having seizures. It may be something to look into. She takes meds for it, and doesn't have it happen very often anymore.

I'm going to forward this on to a good friend of mine as her daughter had an allergic reaction to the DTap vaccination & had symptoms very very similar sounding to yours. I'm forwarding this on to her as I want her to be able to explain to you what her situation was exactly & how she was able to get to the bottom of it (I'm afraid I'd mess up trying to explain it all, sorry)
