UTI / Bladder Infection?

Hi! I just got a UTI on Friday, and researched enough to find out it's common in pregnancy. Didn't have any problems with my first pregnancy, so this was a shock. I'm on an antibiotic now, but wonder if any Mom's out there had the reoccuring problem or kidney problems?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I used to get them all the time. I was born with problems with the tubes that connect your bladder to your kidneys, but they are very common during pregnancy. My best tip to tell you is to drink lots of pure cranberry juice and make sure you always wipe front to back! My mom used to make me drink cranberry juice all the time and it really worked! Make sure you go to the bathroom as much as you can and don't hold it if at all possible. Good luck and congratulations!

After you get over this one I advise either drinking cranberry juice regularly or if that is too much sugar or too much tart or to acidic for your stomach/heartburn etc., there are cranberry supplements you can take as a pill. I love the product AZO. I have to take it the day after s-e-x to keep UTI's at bay, and after struggling for years the supplement helps a ton. Obviously let your OB know before you take anything to make sure they think it is safe. UTI's during pregnancy can be serious so take care & good luck!

Another preventative for UTIs is D Mannose....a sugar sold in the supplement section of health food stores. It is a sugar "ose" that hinders bacteria from sticking along the walls of the urinary tract.

Keep a close eye on your symtoms and write things down if the infection doesn't improve so you can accurately inform your doctor. I suffered from Kidney Stones during both of my pregnancy's and never had them prior or afterwards. I went to the doctor thinking I had a UTI because I had blood in my urine. They dipped the urine, agreed and treated me with an antibiotic. This seemed to make the UTI symtoms go away except the drug gave me back pain near my kidneys. I told my doc this and he shrugged it off as coincidence and a typical symptom of pregnancy. I told him this back pain was isolated to one side near the kidney. He ignored me. A week later I had cloudy urine and back pain that was more intense. Then another week later the back pain became so severe in an instinanious moment that I had to go to the ER and landed myself in the hospital for 3 days. Eventually I passed a stone the size of a pea after getting a catheter in the ER for pre-term labor. This all started at the beginning of my 7th month.

So...my advice is to drink TONS of water (flavor it if you are like me and hate to drink H2O). My urologist recommends adding fresh squeezed lemon to the water. The acidity helps break down the stones that I was producing. Watch your symptoms to see if they change from typical UTI stuff. Take your antibiotic and drink Cranberry juice.

Good luck and Congrats!

I had a UTI with both of my pregnancies. I prevented them from coming back by drinking plenty of water, not holding my urine too long and go to the bathroom directly after intercourse. I have had two since my daughter was born 4.5 years ago, so it is not something that reoccured frequently during or after my pregnancies. I am sorry you are going through this, as I know that it is not fun! Make sure to finish your medicine!!!

I had UTI, kidney stones and kidney infections after I delivered my last two babies... I think it was after my C-sections because of the catheters.. but no problems during pregnancy... I hope you're feeling better soon... I'm currently pregnant with #5 but they said I tested positive for strep and the symptoms are similiar to a UTI...

I had a UTI with my last two pregnancies and both were right around 6 months along. Those were the only ones I've ever had. Just make sure to take all your antibiotics. Although, if I get pregnant again I'm going to take cranberry capsules to prevent another one. Good luck!
