I have a very active little guy when he's sleeping. You put him in one spot and he'll end up at the opposite end of the crib with legs or arms stretched out between the bars. The result is that when he wants to move again, he can't and ends up waking up and crying. I've not been using a bumper in the crib as he'll come right up to the bars and press his face into them as he's sleeping. I'm afraid of him repeating this behavior with the bumper up and then having problems breathing. Should I be concerned with using the bumper or not? Thanks for any advice.
They make this really great bumper that is made out of mesh. It prevents them from getting their arms and legs stuck in the crib and it still keeps the SIDS risk down. I found it on Amazon.com

I would for sure not use a normal bumper until he is closer to a year old. But, babies-r-us has "breathable" bumpers. They are made of a mesh-like material so when baby's face is pressed up against it he can still breathe. It looks like it just prevents their little limbs from going through the crib and getting stuck. They are in the section by the the bedding and mattress covers. Hope this helps!
You should NEVER use bumpers. Companies sell them because people still buy them, even with all the warnings out there. The only ones that are ok, are the mesh ones, and even with those you should weave them in and out of the spokes. Another concern with bumpers as a child gets older is that they can be used to stand on and the child will then fall out of the crib.
We had the cutest bumper that matched the sheets and curtains and when the nurse came to our home a few days after we left the hospital after our daughter was born, she told us to take it out. SIDS risk - the child can re-breathe his/her exhaled CO2 and not get enough O2. That is what we were told...I don't understand why they sell bumpers if they are not good to use but I don't want to take any chances!!
They don't recommend using a bumper pad when the child starts moving in the crib. I always took them out of the crib, when my children were able to roll over or scoot in the bed. Same with stuffed animals...
buy some mesh, like the sides of a play pen and make a sleeve for the crib rails, make it tight, and you are going to have to take the crib apart, but that's a small price to pay for not worrying about your child suffocating, or getting his arms and legs stuck. The mesh will provide the protection from putting his hands and feet through, and still allow him to breathe if he smashes his face up to it, just remember to MAKE IT TIGHT so he cannot wrap it around his face! I wish I would have thought of it when my daughter was little!!!
Bumpers are not recommended as your son could suffocate. i would not use them. As far as getting his legs and arms "stuck" at night, I have not the slightest clue as to what you could do for that. It is a shame that he is waking up because he can't move. I would definitely not use bumper pads. Good Luck!
Our daughter is 9 months old and is all over her crib! We got a sleep positioner from babies r us ( i think it was $10-$15) and it doesnt keep her still at night but it does keep her from getting stuck....most of the time. We found that it kept her in place and she slept through the night. I was always worried about her rolling over with her arm stuck in the bars. Anyways it worked for us and I hope you find something that works for you :)

I have just heard brand new news that bumpers and blankets are now OK in cribs. They thought this was problem with SIDS but apparently they now say it's ok. If he is able to move around and roll his face shouldnt' get stuck in any fabric. I have personally seen a one year almost suffocate with one of those blanets that are crotched or whatever the kind Grandma's make because this little guy got tangeled in it and those fancy holes in the blanket. I used a bumper on my daughters crib because she was always banging her head. You could try plexi-glass or mosquito netting maybe come up with a creative way to attach this to the crib so his legs and arms and head doesn't get stuck.
