US Embassy Attacks - Are You Angry?

Following up on the previous question, both the US Embassy in Egypt and the US Embassy in Libya were attacked. We lost 4 Americans in Libya, and our compound in Egypt has taken a lot of damage although we haven't had any deaths yet. All of this is over a movie? We spend billions of dollars on both of these countries - and these are DIPLOMATS. Yet we take it. Does anyone remember Tanzania or Kenya? When are we going to finally get angry as a country? I have travelled all over the world - I worked in International Education and lived in several countries overseas. I am beyond upset today! Is anyone else concerned? I know that there are problems at home too - esp in Chicago but if diplomacy is being attacked what choices end up being left?

Do people not realize it happens EVERYWHERE? Why do we only get upset when it's our own? That's MY question. Why isn't it upsetting that this happens elsewhere in the world daily?

I mean....are people so oblivious to the world...that they really don't know it's dangerous out there? These attacks are the norm, in many places? Or, do people only care if it's Americans. Ironically, that's a very American way of thinking.

Of course, it's upsetting!! I also find it upsetting, that some people (I'm not pegging you, personally) only care, if people who die are Americans.

I think it's tragic when anyone is killed for any reason. It think it's tragic that this A-hole Koran burner jerk face American "preacher" is partially responsible for promoting the provocative inflammatory "movie" in question and making it sound like a big American blockbuster when none of us had even heard of it. Assholes like him have blood on their hands along with terrorists when they make it their purpose to keep hate alive.

This is not a presidential issue. This is a terrorist act that would have happened on anyone's watch. People who think Mittens and Ryan would have scared the pants off all the bad guys and prevented this atrocity are sadly mistaken.

When Carter was president, the Iranian government took the US Embassy personnel hostage and refused to release them. When Reagan took office, they immediately released our hostages.

The Iranians weren't afraid of milk-toast Carter or what he would do.
They were afraid of Reagan and what he would do, so they released the hostages when he was sworn in.

The terrorists aren't afraid of Obama. He is the first president to bow to any king and that king was a muslim king. Obama has said that the reading of the muslim prayer (first prayer in the morning) was the most beautiful thing he has ever heard. Why should the MUSLIM terrorist attackers be afraid of a MUSLIM president? It wouldn't surprise me to find that we will INCREASE foreign aid to these countries in gratitude for their attack and giving Obama a chance to apologize for American principles. If I was the leader of a foreign country and I was really grateful for my $Billion relationship with America I would have protected both Embassies with troops, if necessary.

If we get a new president in the white house we would react to this kind of attack with swift and sure justice. Other wise our current president will just bow down to another foreign power.

Good luck to you and yours.

(Did you hear all the booing and jeers when the DNC wanted to put chistrianity back in the DNC platform? They even called for a voice vote because 2/3 of the convention was required to change the platform. The volumne of the "Nays" was louder than the "Yays". Gives you pause to think, if you are a real christian.)

'When are we finally going to get angry as a country?' Um, we have been at war for 11 years. Will more war somehow promote religious tolerance and tolerance for freedom of speech (even when it is in fact hate speech)? Seems doubtful to me.

Angry, yes. Surprised? No. The only choice left is to combat violence with violence. It's the only solution since diplomacy hasn't seemed to work. Once we establish ourselves as a superpower again, respect will follow. Survival of the fittest.

I hate the fact that we lost American lives. In fact, I work with a former law professor of the Ambassador that was killed.

HOWEVER, diplomacy goes both ways. Apparently the film at the root of this was not very diplomatic. Just because we have freedom of speech does not mean that we don't have to act with diplomacy and respect for those who are different or have different beliefs.

I think sometimes we bring things like this upon ourselves because we are very arrogant and flaunt our opinions because we, Americans, have the right to do so. Not everyone recognizes and appreciates that freedom.

Next time, maybe the Americans can be more diplomatic.

Please don't get me wrong. I am totally pro-America and all we stand for but I also think we need to censor ourselves sometimes for the good of the majority.

Less angry than when it's state sponsored.

Certain missions have 'danger pay' and 'hardship pay' associated with them. Diplomats fight over these positions, because they are politically exciting / there is the chance to really have a real voice in the shaping of world policies.

While I'm certainly grieved for their families... Libya is a hotspot. Egypt has been in turmoil for awhile. Pakistan gets repeatedly ugly. Mogadishu, Kabul, I could just keep listing out hotspots after hotspots. Embassies are targets, they get hit. Even in our own country.

So, personally, I have a somewhat more fatalistic view... that this is politics, and politics gets ugly.

Angry. Yes.
Surprised? No.

What about Mogadishu? Does anyone remember that?

it's sad that people (Muslim Extremists) feel the need to attack America over a movie...but that's even happening with 2016: Obama's America...people are being ridiculed for attending...calling it all "propaganda"

has violence broken out over it? minor..but still...how is violence over a MOVIE going to fix or change anything? It will NOT change my opinion of extremists...they are a sad group of people...sorely misguided...

Yes-muslims responsible for these attacks obviously do not embrace our pesky "freedom of speech" gig. This should not strike anyone as odd-they are just never going to-and I never say never. The film "Innocence of muslims" is being attributed as the cause of the attacks-it was produced by an Israeli filmmaker, yet, you don't see anything going on there-"When the going gets tough, the Jews get pissed". We need to envelop this mindset and act accordingly. This is a result of lack of leadership:

hit a hornet nest enough times with a stick and it's contents will spill out as a mass and they will sting you.
Eradicate that nest, and others move in and build more. Ignore and you will be over run, stung a million times and die a horrible death. This is what happens when you play with other countries, it comes with the territory.

Scared? yep ever since Bush launched a campaign to mess with the Middle East.
Concerned? well of course, wondering when I will have to become Muslim just to survive.

Jo - you forgot smokes, premarital sex, birth control, womens lib, and swearing

So I guess its ok for America to keep poking the bear in the eye right? not try diplomacy first. Libya has never been "our friend" what all countries do behind closed doors is beyond us peon's to fathom, we are just the ones that will suffer to diplomacy. Democrat, Republican so on and so forth do not have any credence to what goes on in any other country. Its about power, favors, and how to move the piece on the Stratego board. If it meant bowing to a Muslim king, well that more likely won us something in our favor. I love how most of us sit back and just think what we want to about what we do in other countries, when really we have no clue. We have to take what we are given as gods honest truth. Which most of us do. Like that Green Pill they give ya on the side of all the other colored pills. Well folks we eat it, and then get disgusted a few years down the road when we find out its made of people. Here's the thing. The muslim religon and all its offshoots are darn tootin tired of us. Even the ones that want peace, and equal co-existence. What Nicole said? true...
"Sometimes all it takes is someone to stand up to injustice to make it go away. They are cowards, picking at the fringes of us because they don't expect retaliation. "

except the cowards are us, because the other countries don't comply and lay at our feet when we say "DO IT" So why should 3 countries in the world hold all the power? its just a game, and its who plays it best, wins. We are just toys, and we suffer if our leader doesn't do it right.

I think it's a scary thing that happened because an Egyptian born American created hatred with his movie. Muslims are not bad, extremists are. He should not have made that or posted it. It has now cost several people their lives.

So I am LIVID about this. What's more, I want to see America take action. We HAVE to have a response. But I'm willing to bet there will be none, or at least not to the degree it should be.

I also have a coworker who moved to Cairo 3 weeks ago to work with the Egyptian Air Force...he is safe, but said he and his wife are staying low and in the house. I can't imagine how scared they must be.

Angry? Yes. Concerned? Yes. If you take a big picture look at what's going on in the Middle East, you will see quickly that it is very, very bad, trending towards getting much much worse. One spark could set off a regional war, and we've got thousands of soldiers stuck right in the middle of it. Coupled with the fact that for the last 3 years, the US has been sending foreign aide and weapons to the very insurgents that just murdered our Ambassador, yep, I'm really, really angry and concerned. Time to pull all of our interests out from that entire region. Does anyone remember what the final straw was that started WWII in the European Theatre? I'm afraid history is about to repeat itself, and the US will be expected to jump in and defend our European allies and Isreal.

upset? always upset when i hear of violence.
surprised? i am surprised only because i was not aware of this movie. i just read about the movie, and i have to say, it wouldn't have flown well in the states if the tables were turned, and the movie were about christ.
middle east is very religious, fine line between religious and extremists. many of these nations, do not have freedoms, live in poverty, have oppressive government.
i am against violence, but i don't have a curtain covering my eyes. i see the world for what it is. and it is the way it is.
for once, i don't blame obama :). the middle eastern nations have been upset with us since iraq (anyone remember that invasion?)

I think it's terribly sad and completely ignorant that most Americans think all of these attacks are because of some privately-funded obscure movie. That's exactly what this current administration wants you to believe! They continuously apologize to these terrorists and take NO ACTION to stop them. An attack on a US Embassy or consulate should be considered an attack on US soil. If aid was cut to these countries, or if America fought back with force, how long do you think these attacks would continue? These terrorists are people that don't know anything different than what they have been taught their entire lives, that America is evil. What's evil is that our president doesn't even take the time to listen to his intelligence briefings and instead skips it altogether to to attend a Las Vegas fund raiser for his re-election campaign! Who does that?? Who completely IGNORES terrorist attacks against Americans?? He does! AND he completely condemned Romney BEFORE he condemned the attacks in Egypt and Libya! I am a proud patriot against this Obama administration and if he is reelected, our economy will collapse and our country will surely be in ruin.
