Unwanted Hair, What Do You Do?

Okay we all have it, some have it and it isn't seen by others, some have it and have it removed by lazer, some have just a very few some feel like a ware wolf. After having my son I noticed some unwanted hair (other than the normal upper lip hair that is a small amount) on my chin and neck. I would pluck the sucker out and bam two days later it was back and followed by some friends. I now have about 20 randomly unwanted hairs and have found my self obsessing about it.. feeling for the "sprout" and keeping tweezers in the car.. ever found that you have the best light there? I don't have money to go out and pay for some crazy expensive machine that won't work or lazer removal. I am not about to wait for the suckers to grow in to wax (which isn't plucking the same kind of thing, pulling the hair from the root.)In any case I thought I would ask my fellow mothers out there if they share the same thing, what do you do? Do you share my obsession of wanting them gone? Just wanting to know I am not alone and if there is a trick I am unaware of! :) Thanks Mama's!!!!!

What can I do next?

You should definitely talk with your doctor about this issue, because it is probably hormone-related...hirsutism can be a symptom of several conditions, and may not resolve itself. One possible medication the doctor could prescribe (or you may want to ask about) is Vaniqua , which is a topical-application cream (not a hair-removal cream). There are other oral medications that I have found very effective, based on my diagnosis, but your doctor should be the one to discuss those with you if appropriate based on your situation (still nursing, planning another pregnancy or not, etc). Talk to your doctor sooner rather than later...plucking may be a losing battle! Best of luck!

First of all, some support about the hair:
My heritage is 100% Sicillian. I identify most with the werewolf description! I keep up with the options with an eye for value and safety and have chosen the same option (tweezing) for my chin. Just be careful to grab it at the root and try not to get any fine hairs, as breaking them off may make them dark or coarse too. I keep tweezers in my purse. Sometimes those things seem to literally pop out! Our society tends not to be kind to those with any "extra" hair. It is a very superficial and silly judgment. Know that you are your wonderful self with or without a few extra hairs.

With the appearance being tied to a very hormonal event, it does seem to be the cause, though you probably want a professional to verify that. It is true that having a baby causes big hormonal fluctuations, but our bodies have mechanisms to deal with that. There are lots of possible influences these days that can interfere with these mechanisms, but there are lots of things to do about them. I recommend that you research options before opting for synthetic hormones. A great start is Dr. Sherrill Sellman.

She is a Dr. of Naturopathy who has devoted her career to researching the things that affect our hormones. Lots of good info that we all should know. Most of all, I'd say that if you are generally taking care of yourself and feel good otherwise, take your time. Stress is a hormone disrupter!

I have known several women with this problem. They've been told it's the result of hormones. I suggest that before you do anything else you check with your doctor. The doctor may have a medical solution for those pesky hairs. Pregnancy does alter our hormone balance.

If I remember correctly, my mother started taking something for her thyroid. As she aged the hairs came back but by then she didn't care.

Electrolsis will work better than lazering. I paied hundreds of dollars on lazer treatments that didn't work. Nads works well, at least on legs. Otherwise keep those tweezers handy, and welcome to the club. (one you never wanted to be a member of.) I hope some other mama's have more info for you. Good luck, I have to go tweeze the forest off my chin! Mandy

It may sound outrageously expensive, but the laser hair treatment is the BEST thing EVER. I've had my legs, bikini, brows, and lip/chin done. I had bad, dark thick leg and bikini hair that was a nightmare, and I now have almost none for the last 7 years. I can shave them once a summer. Lip hair is essentially gone, but once in a while (every two years or so) it needs a good zap. Chin is different, because those are hormonal and new follicles form. Laser cauterizes a follicle so hair won't grow in it, but it can't do much about new ones forming. However, I find that 2 times a year for the chin is enough to control it (after you've had 3 done in 5 week increments). You will not regret spending the money on it, if you can think of $400 (that's the cost for a 5 package treatment, try Aesthetic Medicine in Beaverton, they have the latest lasers) that you can not spend on something else in the next 1.5 years. Go for it!
