Unhealthy Fumes from Tempurpedic Mattress?

I bought my son a tempurpedic mattress. The fumes are terrible, and the store told me that they would dissipate within a few days. The first night my son woke up with a headache and feeling nauseous. He slept in my other son’s room for a few nights, but after he went back, he still doesn’t seem to feel that well. He wants to keep the mattress because it is comfortable, but I don’t think something that off-gasses like that can be healthy. Does anyone have information on the health effects of these fumes and how long it would take before there is no more off-gassing (if it is ever totally done). I am feeling like I should just send it back and get an organic mattress.

What can I do next?

Hi V.,

I know it is scary exposing our children to so many chemicals and not knowing the effects it can cause later on in their life.

I introduced my family to Nikken's wellness home. They have pads and mattresses that were indorced by the World Federation of Chiropractic as the most advanced sleep technology in the world. The bedding has no chemical smell, helps the body to get to the 5 stages of REM along with blankets to regulate your body temperature.

Take a look at the site so you may learn more www.nikken.com/ninamarie

There are Children's wellness expos that doctors put together to share the benefits of a healthier environment.

Let me know if I may answer any questions.

Stay well.

I would definitely take the mattress back. It is known that the off gassing from mattresses is toxic and if you can smell it and is giving your son a headache that's pretty severe. I bought a firm latex mattress and I love it, is is all natural. Gasses from mattresses have been linked to SIDS and while that may not be a concern for you with older children, they do reccomend wrapping your mattress to keep the fumes from escaping near baby's face, so maybe if you decide to keep the mattress you could wrap it.

Hi V.,
We also bought a tempurpedic matress not too long ago. I also woke up with a head ache the first night. My husband did massive research on the fumes due to the fact we have 2 small children. He said it is harmless and it is just the foam being packaged up. Give a few days and open the windows if tou can and it will be gone before you know it. We have had out for about a month and you cant even tell.
I also sprayed febreeze on the sheets and blankets to mask the fumes.

good luck

I can't locate the website right now, but there is a new "disease" in Germany that has been traced to the off-gassing and other negative features of Tempur-pedic mattresses. In fact, many memory foam products share that health hazard and workers in factories that manufacture the stuff complain of respiratory distress. Google off-gassing + toxin. The stuff can do a great deal of harm to your child's immune system.

In addition, once the off-gassing disappears, German researchers have found that the mattresses sleep too hot and that bacteria accumulate in the mattresses and thrive there.

Assuming you have the 3-month warranty, take it back and get a refund! Look for something that is wool or cotton or ceramic foam. (We use the latter and love it.)

I am a health and wellness consultant, a mom and grandmother. I will look for the web reports again--email me back if you want the info.

Get rid of it! It's made with petroleum and treated with a toxic cocktail of flame retardants. Get a latex organic mattress. It is just as comfortable as a tempurpedic! Go the www.greenfusion.com in San Anselmo. They make great mattresses and bedding. We spend too many hours of our lives sleeping. It's worth the investment!! Or try www.greencradle.com
Your son's health is worth it!!!

Environmental Working Group has loads of helpful information about this topic and lots of other stuff as well (like safe sunscreen and lunchboxes. Spend some time reading through this:

http://www.foamorder.com/health.html

Anyway, I would return that mattress so fast!

If you can afford it I'd go with the organic. The fumes are never totally harmless and spraying more chemicals on top of the fumes only compounds the misery and damage to the lungs.
