My grandaughter is 3 yrs old. She goes to daycare and sometimes wears dresses. My daughter asked me today should she wear a covering over her underwear since she hasen't become modest yet?

What can I do next?

My daughters have to wear uniforms to school (pleated skirts), and I have them wear little bike shorts underneath. That way they can play on the jungle gym, hang upside down, do cartwheels etc and not show the world their panties! =)

I say yes! put a little pair of shorts, capri or leggins on, will still look cute but not show her underwear, until she learns how to sit, play and all that with out showing everyone her undies!

Once my daughter was no longer in diapers I put shorts on under all her dresses. I think it helps her not have to think about being modest and is more comfortable for her to just be able to play. It takes a while for the modesty to kick in so I will help her until she can do it on her own.

Yes, she should! It's not her fault, she's only three but she really should have something covering her underwear. Cute cotton shorts under her dresses are a very good choice for this. They wouldn't need to be pricey, just buy some solid colors from wal-mart since their just play clothes.

At our preschool, elementary, and up girls had to wear something underneath.

My 15 yr old is a cheerleader and does a lot of athletics... they all wear the tight cheer shorts (they call them spandex) which is sold at places like Dick's and looks like boy cut undies in black. This goes under everything, workout shorts, uniforms, and the girls even wear them when they wear dresses.

I was wondering the same thing! This is the first summer my 3 year old is out of diapers. She wore a dress the other day and showed the world her panties. I'm going to look into the bike shorts others have suggested. Even though it's not my question, thanks :D

:) the lil boys in her class won't care about her underwear either. No, i don't think that is nessasary. Most lil children at that age, and alil older are not modest..boys or girls..

Our daughter only wore dresses all the way through daycare. (her choice)
My mother in law used to make solid panty covers. Almost like bloomers but not (puffy).
She had, red, black, purple, Pink in about 3 different shades, blue and green. If I could find shorts that were short mid thigh and fitted she would wear those.

Once she got to elementary school she continued to wear a lot of dresses. They had PE every day so she wore shorts under her dresses.

FYI, I volunteered in our daughters Elementary PE class one year and was shocked at how many of the girls wore dresses with just panties. We had a male PE teacher in elementary. I made sure from then on that we REALLY encouraged parents to have their daughters wear shorts under their dresses..

The school and coach had always sent out an information sheet about how kids should dress suggesting tennis shoes , socks, and shorts for girls but I guess parents did not really think about it.

At the kids store Gymboree www.gymboree.com they have what is called "bike shorts' and i used it to cover my daughter's underwear when wearing dresses. Its real cute.

But also at this age, I taught my daughter how to cover her crotch/panty area when sitting etc. How not to open her legs when sitting for the whole world to see. I told her this is "private" and just to watch how she sits. She understood.

all the best,
Susan

Absolutely she should have something under her dresses. My daughter has always had something under her dresses and then we also practice "sitting like a princess." She didn't grasp the term "lady" until just recently. When she was 4 she would say, "but mommy, ladies are old and I'm just a little girl"...lol!

Yes, definitely. A three-year-old may not be modest, but the people around her probably are (adults, I mean), and panties don't always stay in the right place when they're playing.

My daughter has always loved to wear dresses and skirts. I always make sure she has on a pair of bike shorts (Gymboree sells great ones), unless it's a skirt with shorts already attached. It doesn't even matter if the colors/patterns match exactly. The good thing is now that she's old enough to be modest, she's used to wearing them--they don't feel strange and new, and she never has to be reminded to put them on.

I wish I could find "big girl" bike shorts of some kind for me to wear under MY dresses! :)

I work at a preschool and I am constantly telling the little girls to be careful how they sit and to make sure their dresses are down. When parents dress their children in the cute outfits in the mornings, they don't always think of what they will do for the rest of the day. I would suggest a pair of shorts under the dresses. The outfit is still cute and nothing shows when they sit criss cross on the floor or do the crab walk in gym.

I always make both my girls (ages 3 and 5) wear shorts and leggings. I know family and friends look at them with good eyes and as a kid you can't remember all the time that you're not supposed to be showing any private areas. Most important I use it to cover them from the eyes of people that don't have any good intentions. When I was a kid I remember many times "flashing" my underwear to one of my uncles while pretending I was a dancer. That same uncle later on started doing i************ t******* to some of my other cousins my same age. I was lucky since I lived in a different city and didn't interact with him very often. As an adult, now I reflect on that and I want to be very careful with my girls. I feel that by dressing them a little bit more maybe they will more protected from those kind of people.

yes she should have a covering but more importantly she should be taught how to sit like a lady when in a dress. My girls both learned this before they were 3 so when going to church in a dress even though they sit in a circle on the floor alot they knew exactly how to sit so their panties didn't show. However... with play it is different. My oldest daughter loves the monkey bars and jungle gym (including flipping over and hanging upside down) so she always wears tiny little shorts under her skirts and dresses. Target and Walmart usually have cute solid color little shorts for about $3 a pair (always cheap on clearance at the end of summer too). Your daughter could purchase some in the most common colors that match your granddaughters dresses and be good to go.

Yes. I did this ALL THE TIME when Abbie was in preschool. Actually, one of her daycare's required it! Better to be safe than sorry. Besides, when they are playing, climbing up on playground equipment, etc., it's just better not to have to worry about it.
