I had my ultrasound yesterday I am 2o almost 21 weeks, the tech saw markers in three spots on my baby, My dr. told me I need to see the perinaltologis to check for spina bifida and to check the heart as well. I am scared does this mean my baby has this for sure? Has this happened to anyone else before? By the way this is my fourth baby, my other three are very healthy 18,10 and 8. I am 40 yrs old now.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well the perinaltologist confirmed that my baby has spina bifida, and the opening is very small about an inch. I am devestated, I am going to UCLA for a second opinion. I wonder if there could be a chance of him being wrong??

I was only 24 with my first when they spotted 3 soft markers for Down syndrome. We opted to not do the amnio because there is a chance of miscarriage. We also declined to talk to the genetic counselor. We did see a perinatologist during the remainder of our pregnancy. Every month, we got the same news, most likely downs, edwards, or some other mental retardation. Our son was born 8 days late, and 100% healthy. On the other side, I have a friend whose ultrasounds showed nothing. And they were very surprised to have a little girl with down syndrome, who is the light of their lives. She just turned 1.

You never know what is going to happen. The tests could be wrong, they could be right. Ask yourself what it matters in the long run. You will have a baby that you'll love, and that will love you. No matter the outcome. I wish you all the best.

I am 38, have a 20, 13, 10 and 4 year old. When I was pregnant with my 4 year old they saw several things that conserned them during one of my ultrasounds. I had all kinds of tests done, more sonograms, etc. They thought he had downsyndrome, or other issues. I just told myself, whatever the case, he's going to be my baby. And after all the worrying...he was born perfectly normal. I hope your baby is born healthy too.

Nope it doesnt mean it for sure. I had to see a perinatoligist with my pregnancy (im 30 weeks). First you will have a meeting with a genetic counselor, then you will be given a level 2 ultrasound. After the ultrasound you will be given the option of an amniocentesis. I had one, they are not bad at all. If you opt to to do the amnio, you will get 99.6% accurate results on if your baby does have spinabifida. Im sure everthing will turn out fine. Regular ultrasounds arent the best information to rely on. Good Luck.

at 40 it is more of a precautionary like checking for downs. I will pray for you and dont panic yet. they did a downs test on my son when I was 40 and he is fine. it is just a precautionary so they know what to expect. at your age you will also get the downs test don't panic.

You won't know for sure until you speak with the perinatologist. There are 4 forms of spina bifida, ranging from very mild to severe. Here is some information regarding it and how it is checked during pregnancy:

Sorry you are going through this, I hope all turns out alright.
