Hi I have been on birth control pills for 6 years now. I am currently taking YAZ. I was just wondering if anyone has a good experience with another form of birth control. A little about me... I never have had much of a period even when I was younger. My periods now are not very much of anything. I plan on having more kids I just know now is not the best time. I don't know if it is ok for me to be on the pill for so long. I was on the pill for 4 years had a baby got back on for 3 years had a baby and now it has been 6 1/2 years. What to do?

What can I do next?

I am on Mirena and love it! My periods were also next to nothing (when I did have one) and they are even less know that I am on Mirena. It is great and I don't have to remember to take a pill every day!

My husband (resident physician) would tell you you've been on for too long and should try something different. Most doctor's don't seem to have a problem with women being on progesterone and estrogen hormones for long periods of time, but it does have some risks associated with it.

You might want to look into an IUD (like the marina (sp?)) that contains some progesterone so you don't ovulate either. Its more longterm and not as many hormones or pills/patches to worry about.

Condoms and diaphragms are annoying, but they don't have the sideaffects of hormones.

I was on the pill for about 4 years before trying to conceive and he felt that was long enough for me. I plan on having a tubal once our 2nd child is born.

You could try the IUD which is an inter uterine device. It only contains progesterone (I believe). I have had it for about a year and half and love it. I do not have peroids but some women still do. It's nice because you do not have to remember to take a pill. My ob/gyn used the mirenia brand it can stay in for 5yrs there is also the copper t that lasts for 10.

My husband and I use Natural Family Planning. As you can imagine there are no side effects and when used correctly it is 99% effective.

I have been on the mirena IUD for almost 4 years and I love it. The dr put it in and my insurance covered that. With mirena I don't have any periods and my cramps, mood swings, etc that went with them are gone too. I haven't had any trouble with weight gain or anything else. You have to have it taken out every 5 years but my dr says that she can put another one in when she takes out the first and if I decide to have another child, I would return to full fertility within 2 months of removing it. My husband and I are both extremely happy with this option.
Good Luck!

I guess the first question would be "are we done having kids"? For us, the answer was yes. We knew when we tried for #3 that we were done after. Since I was having a C-section, I arranged for a tubal at the same time. I wouldn't change a thing! In fact, even if I hadn't had a C-sec. I would have gone in for the tubal. I just like knowing that I won't have any accidents later in life (God willing!). Okay, maybe accidents isn't the right word, but I know too many people who were done...only to have a bonus baby in their late 40's!

Hi J.,

I took Yaz for a year after my 2nd was born - I didn't like it...can't say 100% that it made me gain weight and feel irritable, but I stopped taking it 4 months ago and look and feel a ton better! I got the Mirena IUD 4 weeks ago and am in love with it - would HIGHLY recommend!

I went on Loestrin 24 FE (with iron) 3 years ago and found it to be the bcp with very little side effects. I was a wierd case for my ob because I had bad cramps when I was on the pill but when I went off to get pregnant with my daughter prior to the pregnancy I had barely any cramps. When I switched docs due to moving he had me try Loestrin and it worked and limited my cramps for the first time in a great many years while on the pill (I know I am an exception to have cramps while on the pill). Anyways we decided we are done having children so back in April I had the Essure procedure done. I have just gone off the Loestrin, but I do reccomend it if you do not are not ready to make a more final decision.

Good Luck

What about condoms? My husband and I have been using condoms for 9 yrs. They aren't that bad. I know the guy might complain at first, but once he gets used to it, it's no big deal. We use the ultra sensitive kind. There are a few pluses to using condoms. They are definitely cleaner for us women. You don't have to take something daily (like the pill) even though you may only have sex twice a week. No hormones, no side effects, they're all natural. You also tend to get more foreplay, because he usually puts it on last minute, so foreplay lasts longer. Then when you are all done having kids, have him get a vasectomy. That's what we're gonna do.
