I stopped using Tylenol when my Dr told me it might be a factor in elevated liver enzymes.

"Recent studies have indicated that there is a direct correlation between liver damage and the consumption of acetaminophen or Tylenol. Many people have recently suffered from liver damage due to consuming too much acetaminophen or Tylenol. Some people have even also experienced liver damage after consuming Tylenol or acetaminophen in regular doses."

So these days, we all use aspirin or Advil or ibuprofen.

tylenol for most things for me....

advil for super pain, otherwise I avoid it - it raises my BP. Dr told me to stay away from it.

Tylenol, but you night want to hold off because with low-grade fever, doctors don't always recommend trying to lower the body temperature. Doing so may prolong the illness or mask symptoms and make it harder to determine the cause.

Some experts believe that aggressively treating a fever interferes with the body's immune response. Viruses that cause colds and other respiratory infections thrive at normal body temperature. By producing a low-grade fever, your body may be helping to eliminate a virus.

Taking tylenol for me is like taking a sugar pill - it does absolutely NOTHING.
Taking ibuprofin for my sister causes severe stomach cramps and nausea.
Ibuprofin has the following properties:
1. Anti inflamatry(to reduce inflammation)
2. Anti pyretic (To reduce fever)
3. Analgesic(to reduce pain)
while paracetamol have only 2 action (sorry I am from Holland, this is tylenol)
Tylenol only has 2 properties:
1. Anti pyretic (To reduce fever)
2. . Analgesic(to reduce pain)

Hope you feel better soon. In our area there are 2 big "bugs" going around: one is a 2 day diahrea stomach upset, and the other is a 24 hour vomiting thing. We have all had the 1st in our house, and hoping the avoid the 2nd.

I alternate between tylenol and ibuprofen (every 4-6 hours). The combination seems to help more.

Alternate them, it will help to keep the fever down and not spike up.

Whatever you use, if it's not working then switch to the other.

When I was sick last month, I was taking Tylenol and my fever was not going away. So I took some Advil and it went away in an hour.

You can alternate both every 2 hours (Advil at 12, Tylenol at 2, Avil at 4, etc.).

Feel better :(

Tylenol does nothing for me. Advil is my vote. Hope you get well fast! xoxo!

If this is a persistent fever I would alternately use both.

400 mg advil, wait 3 hours and take tylenol, wait 3 hours and take advil again. This way you are not taking any one thing closer than 6 hours a part.

Just as important is hydration. If you have hydrating drinks in the house, drink them.

I can only take Tylenol I am allergic to ALL the others. I usually just let a fever run its course unless it was really high then I would go to the doctor. I cannot even remember the last time I had a fever.
What other symptoms do you have? Maybe try Tylenol cold and flu that should cover a fever and other symptoms.

Sorry R.....hope you feel cooler soon....

I personally only use Advil/Motrin products or Alleve. Tylenol does not help me at all, but it is recommended to alternate the 2 meds.

And take a luke warm bath, and keep cold compresses on your eyes....and drink lots of chamomile tea with honey.

Feel better!

Sorry you're sick! Hope you feel better soon and are able to enjoy the weekend a little.

I've found, through lots of experience with my daughter and recommendations from our doctor, that ibuprophin (Advil, Motrin, etc.) keeps a fever down longer than acetaminophen (Tylenol). I don't get fevers very often at all but for a while my daughter was sick all the time. I don't worry about medicating too much for a low grade fever, but when my daughter has stubborn, high fevers we alternate the meds every 3 hours as our doctor has recommended. As an example, I would give her a full dose of ibuprophin and then 3 hours later I would give her a full dose of acetaminophen and then in another 3 hours I would give her another full dose of ibuprophin, etc..

Another way to help bring down a fever is to get into a warm bath and sit in it while the water cools - it's not as much of a shock to your system as getting right into a cold bath. Also, make sure you're drinking lots of liquids.

Yes.

Depends on how high the fever is. High = both
Low grade = either

One thing to keep in mind with ibuprofen is the max OTC dose for adults (and what they just toss you a bottle of in the military / aka "ground pounder candy") is 800mg of ibuprofen. I have chronic pain, so I take both tylenol+ibuprofen on a regular basis. 600 or 800mg of ibuprofen depending on what I feel like.

Reg strength tylenol = 2x 375mg ((750mg))
Extra strength (aka max OTC dose) = 2x 500mg (1000mg))

I personally usually start off with 1000mg tylenol (my body builds up a resistance to ibuprofen, so I try to save it for pain), and then if that doesn't kick the fever below 102, I add in 600mg ibuprofen. If that still doesn't kick it down I toss in the extra 200mg ibuprofen.

If I'm on 1000mg tylenol & 800mg ibuprofen and my fever is STILL 102+ I phone my doctor.

I have a low normal temp (97.4). I start hallucinating at 103 (wheeeeee). So it's pretty vital I stay on top of things. If I don't, I won't be able to.

It really depends on what your body will tolerate and do best with. My daughter is an advil person. It's the only thing that really worked for her fevers and so now, when she's feelng bad, she takes advil. My son on the other hand, as a baby, responded better to tylenol. So now as a 23 yr old, he takes that to feel better.

I take either or both. If its a fever I can't keep down, I alternate, ever 4 hours, dose of tylenol then advil then tylenol then advil. Works for me. But I'm not a Dr so please dont do it if you haven't been told by one (my dr recommended it to me).

I hope you get to feeling better.

Sending good (and healthy) thoughts your way. :)

I use both. they are different drugs so you can use the Tylenol every 4 hours and Advil every 6. The advil will help with an inflammatory issues you may have.
