Would anyone recommend a family dentist...possibly who does Invisalign? near north Hurst, Colleyville, NRH?
Secondly, our son was recently diagnosed with PDDNOS, possibly Aspergers. Anyone experienced with knowing what would be helpful to do next after getting the diagnosis? We are hearing a lot about the DAN approach but scared to try it...anyone doing the DAN treatments? Thanks soooo much! This is a great forum for moms!

What can I do next?

I took care of twin boys 10 yrs ago and 1 of them was diagnosed with Aspergers (back when it was rare). The other twin did not have it, but they both had ADD/ADDHD, OCD, manic depressive, and teretes (SP?). They went to a special school in Fort Worth that taught them at more of a one on one basis. That was the best approach for us at the house when it came to their school work, escpecially the one with Aspergers. I've never heard of the DAN treatments but on the KERA,ch13 website we found lots of helpful books and videos on how to help your child with Aspergers. Working one on one and getting down to the childs level worked great. When it came to discipline, the child really wanted to be explained why he was in trouble and what he did wrong and how he could prevent getting in trouble. I was told this was because of his Aspergers, the children with Aspergers want to have everything explained to them. Also a schedule was very important for us to maintain. If I ever got off of his schedule whether breakfast time at 8:00 am, lunch at 12:00 etc, it was a very stressful day for him. One of the best things I could tell you is maintain a schedule and explain everything to your child. They are very intelligent children and they learn and retain alot of the information they learn. Don't let anyone tell you any different about your child, they may need to be taught or disciplined differently but they are brillant. Sorry so long.

Hi L.,

Before having children, I worked as a pediatric physical therapist with an emphasis on children with various sensory and learning disorders and diagnoses on the autistic/aspergers spectrum. I used to work with the therapists at Kidnetworks (kidnetworks.com) and Playworks (playworkspts.com). Kidnetworks offers PT and Playworks offers OT - I'm not sure what issues are particular to your son, but I would start at Playworks and go from there. They are in Dallas, which may be a problem for you, but they are phenomenal therapists and, if nothing else, they can lead you in the right direction.

Hello L..

I asked my neighbor for advice; she is a music therapist.

"Tell the mom with autism to check out this website:

http://www.autism.com/index.asp

Dr. Bernard Rimland (now deceased) founded this organization and it is a great source of information. Kathleen"

Best wishes.

The pediatric dentist we use for our 3-year-old is Dr Daniel Donohue. He offices in two locations. We go to the Bedford location, but his other office I think is in Keller or Colleyville. His whole office is good with kids and my husband and I have learned a lot from them about our daughter's dental health too. His wife offices next door and is a general dentist.

I LOVE our dentist in Southlake...

Thorpe Family Dentistry Richard G. Thorpe, DDS Kimberly D. Thorpe, BS, RDH

1940 East Highway 114, Suite 100 Southlake, TX 76092 ###-###-####

This is a husband and wife team, they are great. I have always hated going to the dentist, but because of the outstanding level of service and care I received from Kim and Dr. Thorpe, I actually don't mind going.

good luck,
T.

P.S.
When I tell you I hated going... I would have to take a seditive in order to make it through even a simple cleaning. Even with a seditive sometimes I STILL couldn't make it through. That is not a problem anymore. :-)

Our son has the same diagnosis and I have never heard of DAN treatments. We work with him and his social skills, he welcomes our help. I'm not sure what your sons issues are but for our son, social issues are huge. B.
