So What Happened?

I took him to the ER and they told me it is a viral and all his lab work was fine. The gave me Tylenol to get the fever down. It is about 4:30am and I took his temp under his arm and it was 101.4 I tryed to give him Tylenol but he vomited it up so now I'm not too sure what to do. Oh, he is a 2 month old he was born January 11, 2008. He is 17.9 pounds and is breastfeeding. Thank you all for your help. It is hard when they are so little.

Well, I called the doctor and he said because it is a virus it has to take its course. I told him about the fevers and he said it will be that way for a couple days. I told him about the vomiting and he said that is normal.
Thank you all for your help

I would give my baby some baby Tylenol then give him a warm (not hot) it should feel almost too cool. It should work. don't dress him warm. a t-shirt will do. If you dress him to warm it wont take his fever down or if the bath is to warm it wont take it down either. let me know if it works for you, did for me and my nephews several times.

Take him on to the ER just to be on the safe side. He's still a little young to wait it out.

Call your Doctor about your child vomiting the medicine.

Try giving him a quarter of the dose recommended and see if he can keep that tiny bit down.

Here are some fever reducing tips:

Keep his feet *bare*. No socks. Our feet lets out a lot of heat and socks or booties trap the heat. This is why when you're feeling a bit cold it's better to put socks on than a sweater.

Keep a cool cloth or an ice pack with a single layer of a thin cloth around it on his forehead at all times. You'll need to change it frequently.

Do not wrap him up in a blanket. You can have one over him loosely, but no burrito or tucking as that further traps the heat.

Dear Krisel: I remember my first born woke up in the early am hours with an elevated temp. over 102. I immediately put her in cool bath water, which brought her temp. to normal after 3 to 4 min. You can also put cool wet wash clothes under his arm pits....over his forehead. I called her ped. doctor and was able to wait until morning to get her to the office.

Good-luck and pray it isn't anything too serious! Sometimes it can be just a virus.

I have been told by my mid wife and others that a tempature of that degree is not serious that its not uncommon for the fever to be higher, infants tempatures are always higher than ours and that the fever is just fighting something. If it gets upto 102 or higher then you can try cool towels and lessening his clothes and see if htat works to lower the fever. There are homeopathic fever pills by HYLANDS you can give to your infant to try first.

K.,
Sorry to hear your little one is sick. I would take him to the ER if that is what the doctor recommended you should do.

K., I would say go with your gut. A mother's instinct is best. It's the little voice telling you to "go to the hospital" not the louder voice saying "your just being paranoid". Better safe than sorry I would say. Good Luck.

My son had a fever of 99.9 when he was 10 days old and I was told to avoid seizure to take him ambulance to emergency. I did and found emergency does not know how to handle infants, but will call neo natal doctors. I went to Alta Bates; however I feel that Children's Hospital in Oakland is the best for children as they know them better. My son was hospitalized in intensive care unit for 10 days and had e-coli is his blood - which he could have easily died from. It doesn't sound like the doctor is taking it as serious as he/she should. Maybe you could call the doctor again and see what they recommend or simply take the child to emergency.

I would take him to the ER just because you would feel better. There were times that my daughter was sick and I'd call the doctor's office and they would tell me to wait it out. I always went with my instinct since I think I know my child the best. Once the doctor's office said well she'd probably had a regular flu. Turned out she had an ear infection and I was glad I went with my instinct and went to the 24hours clinic. Hope your son gets well soon.

That was the smart thing to do! 101 anything is pretty high for a two month old. Plus vomiting is not a good sign. I hope you can get some relief today and get his fever to at lest come down. Knowing his age for sure now too...I must warn you that temped bathing is not recommended. You can still do one, but you have to be real careful he does not get too cold. Only leave him in the water for about ten minutes and be sure a warmed towel is ready for when you take him out. Cover his head before you walk with him to another room so the draft does not get him. IF he still has the fever today you should call your pedi and be just be sure they know all that has happen in the past 24 hours.
Good luck!!

Hi there,
Your subject states this is about a two month old and your question is for a two year old...
If this is a two year old, then don't rush him anywhere...a temp of 101.6 through any method is not to worry about. Until it is 104 or higher you can keep in contact with the Dr. during their normal hours.
If this is a two month old, then my pedi recommends that anything above 100.5 rectal be reported. So yes, a temp. of 101.6 can be serious and without the test results there is no telling what can be going on inside his little body. I would give him 0.4ml of infant Tylenol and retake his temp in two hours. If it is still above 101 then I would call the advice nurse and report it and they will probably advise you to take him to ER or maybe wait another hour and see if his temp comes down. Also I recommend writing down every time you give Tylenol and take his temp to keep track and have an accurate recall of events for the Pedi.
Good luck!

my son is a little older but he has had some high fevers lately so ive been doing a lot of reading about remedys other than meds.
apple cider vinegar is great! soak 2 towels in warm water with some a.c. vinegar then wrap his feet, wrap the whole bundle up in dry towels so the wet towels stay warm as long as possible. the vinegar should draw the fever down in to his feet. also a bath with some vinegar works (about 1c to a bath)
my elderly neighbor had a high fever this winter and i did this to her, her fever came down quickly. this works on my son also.
the worry with fevers is that it hangs in the head, the idea is to draw the heat to the extremities and spread it out a little.
hope it helps! hang in there!

If you can hold off; give him a little infant tylenol. Cool wash clothes on him to help bring down his temp. Are you taking right after he's eaten? If so, try waiting @ least 1/2 hr. These are things my doctor told us to do, but ALWAYS follow your gut instinct.

Keep us posted, & good luck.

i think you should call your pediatrician's office. The nurses or staff there will be able to consult with your doctor about your son and give you an answer.

Yes I read someone else response of children's hospital in Oakland. It is great. That is where my doctor sent us when my daughter was having fevers at 3 weeks old. It ended up she had bacterial meningitis and a brain abscess. Luckily we took her in because the day after we got there she started having seizures and had to go into surgery the next day. I would be concerned if he is still having fevers that high this young.

Tylenol is not a good choice. It depletes the immune system. Motrin is better. When they get sick is when you want their immune system to be working at maximum capacity.
Good luck.

Hi K.,

If he is 2 1/2 months, call the peds office and speak to the doctor on call. That way you can be assured that he is getting the best care and advice on what to do. Some tips to keep the fever down, keep him cool- put him in just a diaper or a diaper and onesie. Tepid baths are good too--not cold, just lukewarm. Tylenol is also good and of course just comforting him whenever he needs it. Good luck to you and I hope that he is better soon~

yes, you should go to the ER newborn babies (less than 12 weeks) can get really sick, really quick. anything greater than 100.4 rectally is a fever for a newborn. please heed your peds advice.

Hi K.,

It is a terrible feeling to have a sick child who cannot tell you what is wrong. Keep in constant communication with your doctor. Ask about increasing the dosage of infant tylenol or using infant motrin between tylenol doses. My doctor uses email very effectively. Do not do anything without consulting your doctor.

If you go to the ER you will most likely have to wait a long time and your baby would be more comfortable at home. My husband took our one year old to the ER for a 106 fever. They gave her motrin. She was fine in 30 minutes but had to stay three more hours to be seen by the doctor.

Keep offering fluids. If he refuses the bottle/breast use a dropper or syring to get liquids down.

Hope tomorrow goes better.
Many blessings for you and your little guy.

Angela
