Two Month Old Inconsolable from 3Am Until 5Am

Any suggestions for a two month old who consistently wakes up crying at 3amish and is inconsolable until about 7am. He seems to have some stomach gas but all the burping and mylocon (spell?) drops don't seem to help. This is a relatively new development (about two weeks in the making and really bad for the past 3 days). He will go back to sleep after his midnight feeding but not after the second feeding at 3:30.

What can I do next?

My son went through something similar. I took out all dairy in my diet and eventually switched him over to a non-dairy formula (alimentum didn't work for us, we use nutramigen...) and it's done wonders. he's sleeping through the night most nights and it's significantly improved his disposition.

Hope this helps! I know how hard those nights can be!

I respond to this type of question a lot! If he is breastfeeding, take out dairy for a couple of weeks and see if that improves it. Also, I was against this at first, but eventually we went to a gastro doc for kids and they gave em a couple of reflux drugs. I suggest doing that ASAP and not going to a regular pediatrician first (unless you have to per your insurance). Reflux peaks at 2 months-4 months and calms down by 7 or 8 months. One of my friends also had success with Alimenteum Formula. I really wanted to breastfeed, so I didn't go that route. I have also heard of somethign called Colic Calm helping. I tried mylicon and found it somewhat helpful sometimes. You had to double the dose it said on it (doctors instructions). Also, spend more time burping than you would think before laying em down. Good luck. I know how tough it is!! Remember it is only temporary!

I totally feel for you, and I have dealt with this for 2 babies now. The first one, I didn't know what was wrong, but a different ped this time, and its better. It sounds like acid reflux/Gerd. Get some Hyland's Colic pills, if you can't get those, then the teething ones work pretty good, but the colic pills are the best. You can look on their website to see where to get them. I get them at Target in the pharmacy or at Fred Meyer in the health food section. Keep him sleeping sitting up at at least a 30 degree angle, we use our graco sweetpeace soother, but a swing will work too. Or, the carseat is a good angle. This seems to be the worst at night for some reason. You can also use mylanta or store brand, and give 1 -2 ml at a time to neutralize the acid. Also, a pacifier is really important, we use the gerber ones that look like the old fashioned kind because they have a big bulb and are latex which makes a difference. We also use Alimentum because part of the gerd is a milk protein sensitivity...and my ped said soy can act the same way in the body. My first one could use about half soy and half alimentum, but my 3 month old can't use any soy or breastmilk he was allergic to it too. I hope this helps, if you need more info, please email me. Once you go to the doc, they should give you liquid zantac and maybe prevacid. This work wonders!! But, give them directly, not in a bottle as they don't tend to work as well mixed in.

it may sound strange but have you tryed putting a peppermint in a bottle of water and letting your baby drink it? It worked wonders for my nephew. Good luck!

try fennel tea for you self i used fennel seeds and grind it add hot water (sugar optional for taste) and drink one cup in the morning and one @ night time that will help decrease the gas in you stomach and less gas for you baby if you breast feeding. You could also give about one ounce of fennel tea to you baby its a natural herb i used it for my baby as well good luck hope thats helpfull.

I had major issues with my daughter (now 10 months). I breast feed for about 5 months and then switched to formula. She would wake up a bunch of times during the night crying, and we couldn't figure out what was wrong. Long story short, I switched her to the Nutramigen and within time, she was sleeping more hours. She will wake up in the early morning and I give her a bottle which puts her back to sleep for another few hours. It was a major pain trying to figure out which formula to go with. I had the same problem with my older child (now 4), and put her on the same formula. Unfortunately, it is costly, and not to mention smelly. LOL But it has done the trick, and I think I will try putting her on goats milk instead of cows milk when the time comes. It is a process to figure out, but it will be worth it.
Does he have issues during the day, or is it just at night when he is not moving? When they are not moving, gas can get trapped it their tummies and cause pain. My daughter was fine during the day, but the nights were terrible...I dreaded them. I was hardly getting any sleep.
On the bright side, it is all temporary and as soon as you find out what works for him, he will sleep better. It is most likely a food issue. Oh, I tried mylocon, but I wasn't consistent enough. My ped said that you have to give it to them EVERY feeding. (those bottles are too small, find another brand!) Hang in there!

Sounds like collic. Take rice just plain rice put it in a frying pan with no oil or anything brown the rice till very, very brown then add water and make a tea out of it I think I put about 2 teaspoons or so in a bottle of water (the amount of formula my dauther was taking and give that, in a day or two she was fine. This recipe was given to me by a friend that lived in Alaska and was told by an older Eskimo woman. It works.
