Twin Cities October Wedding-kind of Dress?

What is the weather like in early October in the Twin Cities area?

Would one wear a long sleeve wedding dress with long sleeve solid arms? long sleeve wedding dress with mesh arms? or short sleeve? Those are the two styles I'm into.

Just wonder if a wedding say, October 10th close to 4pm, would mean I need to have long sleeves?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'll go with the style dress I like and I'm not going to worry about the additional expense of a shawl. We won't be outside for long maybe an hour for photo's.

I would go with regular short sleeve because chances of it being very cool on Oct. 10, are slim. I've also seen that date be in the 80's with high humidity.

Having lived in Iowa only 3 hrs from the Twin Cities for 55 yrs early Oct can go either way. You can have a real nice Indian Summer day or snow. I'd advise especially with a 4 pm wedding to go with the solid long sleeves(they don't have to be heavy material). Chances are that it won't be so hot that the solid sleeves will be too hot, however you may defintely want them when the sun goes down. Fact is my daughter is getting married on May 30th which can almost give us the same weather and she is going sleeveless.

Hope you have beautiful weather and a great day and I know you'll be beautiful no matter what dress you choose.

I was married middle of October a few years back and I wore a sleeveless dress and it was a tad chilly out but not bad at all. We didn't have any outdoor photography so it didn't matter what I wore. When I was trying on dresses I didn't think about the date I just cared about the dress and how it looked on me!!

Since weather can be iffy just pick a style you like and then get a little coat to wear over your shoulders if you need to be outside. Not sure if they still make long sleeve wedding gowns??

Good morning! I was going to say the same thing as M. C. Pick something that you are comfortable with. And I have 2 stories for you, very short! My son's 1st birthday party was on Oct 4th, 2007 and the day peaked at like 85* in the late afternoon. His 2nd birthday party was on Oct 5th, 2008 and we had to huddle in the garage because of the cold and rain. Both days - TC Marathon. #1 - someone passed from a heart attack/ heat stroke on the course, #2, people were crossing the line with blood dripping from seams freezing and rubbing.

PS - if you don't already have a wedding photographer, I"m listed here under local businesses - M. Lyn Portraits. Congratulations!

Hi - I actually had an outdoor ceremony (indoor reception) at a St Paul mansion on October 2, 2004. Our ceremony started at 5pm and it had rained the day before and it was chilly - we had a short ceremony so it was fine - we also had a back up plan should it be too cold or wet. I wore a strapless gown and was a little chilly but it was so worth it - I would do it all over again. One thing to mention - one of my best friends was married the exact same weekend the year before and it was 70 degrees so it can go either way. If you are having an indoor wedding and just wondering because of the season - I say it doesn't matter - find a dress that you love and go with it - the weather is really not a factor in my mind!
Good luck, happy wedding and beautiful marriage to you both!

I got married on September 28 and wore a strapless dress and had a wrap and our wedding was all outdoors, including the reception. I wasn't cold at all and it was a grey day with some rain.

My sister also got married in late September of last year and the cooler weather was nice with all the running back and forth and picture taking.

I think you should get whatever dress you love and just buy a matching wrap in case you get a bit chilly. And if you are worried about being cold during pictures outdoors you could just throw on a white hoodie in-between shots.

I got married in Wisconsin the end of October on the 27th. I had a strapless dress and so did my bridesmaids. It was probably about mid 50's - but your only outside for a short time while your taking pictures. A couple of my bridesmaids were cold, but I was perfectly fine, the cold didn't bother me.
Congrats!!!

Hello!
I am a wedding photographer and I would say pick the dress that you are most comfortable in! There are no "rules" for what kind of arms your wedding dress should have for a fall wedding. You can always get a shall if it gets colder early this year. Have fun wedding dress shopping!

I'm from Milwaukee and our weather is pretty similar to the twin cities--October is always a crapshoot. It could be absolutely beautiful (70 degrees and sunny) or it could be snowing. Seriously. Is there anyway you can layer--like a pretty shrug or jacket over a dress (that way you could use it if you need it or leave it if you don't). There really isn't much way to predict which one it will be-- good luck!

I got married on October 9 in a short-sleeved dress. It ended up being quite cold that day, but the only time it mattered was when we were taking some pictures outside. So, I shivered for 20 minutes, but it was okay. It gave us something to laugh about. It's pretty much impossible to determine what the weather is going to be like in October around here. I would say just get the dress you like!

I got married October 9 (10 years ago), and on my wedding day it was 70 and sunny--just a beautiful day. I had a tank-style A-line dress, and was TOTALLY comfortable. Honestly, I don't know that I thought about the weather--I agree with others to get a dress you love, and have a shawl or wrap to wear if it's chilly. You'll be running on so much adrenaline that you probably won't even feel it if it's cold! (And FWIW, I would say that in the past 10 years, there have been more sunny warm days on our anniversary than not.) Congrats!

I've photographed and been in lots of weddings in the late fall, winter, and early spring. Wear the dress you like! Most brides I've photographed in the late fall have worn sleeveless dresses, so just find the one you love nad buy it, there are no rules on what you can and can't wear for a wedding dress.

My sister got married in February in Pennsylvania at a mansion! It was beautiful... she had a strapless dress and this gorgeous stoll to go over it for outdoor pictures.

So pick the dress you like, there are no rules about it!

I got married November 17, 2001 in St Cloud, MN in a tank style dress...and it was 70 degrees and I was sweating! Of course, it was a record high, beautiful day. But--I would also definitely count on being WARM that day--photos and the glam of guests and hugging that goes on make most people warm, regardless of the weather. Anyway--I'd go with a dress you LIKE and forget the weather; it could be snowing or it could be 80. You can always find a shawl, unless you're planning to get married outside, which I don't know that I'd recommend in October in MN. Congratulations!

My friend got married in the middle of October (2005) and it turned out to be the nicest day ever!!! It was like 75 degrees. It was beautiful. But we've been known to get snow in October in MN as well......

You could do the short sleeve and just buy a shawl (or whatever else you want to call it.....) to be safe in case it ends up being cold or even snowing!

Try on both style dresses and when you find the right one, you'll know!!! Good luck.

P P,

It's really hard to say from year to year, but it probably won't be very warm. It could be nice (60's) or it could threaten to snow. The average high is 59 in Oct, the average low is 40, but the beginning of the month is usually warmer than the end. If it was me, I would go with a long sleeve dress. If you like the mesh arms, I am sure it won't make much of a difference in how warm you stay.

Congrats,
S.

Oh boy, October weather in Minnesota is very unpredictable. I can tell you I had a late October wedding and wore a strapless dress and was very chilly :) Don't let that stop you though, you can always find a shawl or some kind of pretty wrap to wrap up in if you're outside.

I was married in the end the November and wore strapless. There was even snow on the ground, but I had a fur shoulder wrap and we didn't spend much time outside. Wear whatever makes you happiest!

One suggestion -- You may just want to avoid outdoor shots if it's too cold. We did some outdoor engagement shots and we were freezing and looked uncomfortable. We actually have some outdoor shots after the wedding service and look so happy -- cold didn't bother us at that point! In fact, since we were married we both looked much more relaxed (than in the before the wedding shots). Have a great time!

I got married in Wisconsin in January and had a sleeveless dress. Just make sure you have a coat when you go outside if it is cold. You move around so much anyway at the reception which keeps you warm.

I would just go with the dress you like the most... it could be really nice or it could be a bit chilly.

My husband and I got married Oct. 2 at 4:30 and I had short sleeves (actually more like cap sleeves) on my wedding dress. The bridesmaids also had cap sleeves.

I say you can wear what you are comfortable with - it is your wedding day!

The air is cooler but what a beaultiful time of year!!!

Congrats and good luck!!!

October is hard to predict. It could be 80; it could be 40. My wedding was in January. The weather was in the 50's the day before the wedding and in the 30's the day of.

My point is, don't choose a dress based on weather. Get what you like and what looks good on you. Personally I think long sleeves are more elegant than short.

My wedding was in January in the evening and I had a strapless dress and a balero jacket for the reception (i didn't wear the jacket because I was too hot).

My son and daughter-in-law were married on October 8th in central MN and she had a short sleeve dress. She did not seem to find it too cool. This year, it's hard to say, the weather is so undependable. Good luck and at any rate and Congratulations.

I haven't seen the other comments, but just to add my two cents: we were married at the beginning of September outdoors in Itasca State Park (so way up northern MN) and I wore a strapless dress. I think I did have a shawl in case I got cold, but I didn't. In fact, I was probably overheated, but that was probably the adrenaline as much as anything. So find a dress you love and don't worry about the sleeves. If you are concerned about being cold, you could get a pretty shawl, but I don't think I'd worry about it.

Congratulations!
