Turbo Tax... Good or Bad?

I was thinking about doing my taxes on turbo tax this year and was doing some research on it. There were a lot of people saying it was a bad site and after they filed the IRS contacted them and said they filed wrong. Now I'm a little nervous to use them. Has anybody used turbo tax and was it a good experience or bad? Or if not can you offer any good sites? I don't want to go to H&R block because they are so expensive.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Mine aren't that complicated. For now I'm a stay at home mom so it's just my husbands W2 and claiming our daughter who was born in may. I didn't know turbo tax had a cd.. I just go to turbotax.com. I'm hoping it is the same thing.

I've used it every year for ages. I have never once had a problem with it. It's pretty straight forward to use. I go through everything manually instead of the "guided" thing before filing it.

I have used the free online version of Turbo Tax for the past few years, but I only do it to backcheck my accountant's work. If you don't print out your tax returns, you don't have to pay. I still use an accountant because my taxes get complicated with multiple house refinances and IRA conversions.

Last year, Turbo Tax helped me determine that my accountant made a huge mistake on my taxes because they didn't realize that I unconverted a Roth IRA account. So it was well worth the time to input my numbers. By the way, inputing all of my W-2 and income information is so super easy for me because all of my accounts and my husband's employer can link with Turbo Tax and input the numbers for me.

If I were you, I would stay away from H&R Block. They are not certified public accountants. One of my in-laws works for them sometimes, and I wouldn't trust her to count back C. to me, much less do my taxes. I would trust Turbo Tax over those pop-up tax places.

My husband used it for years and we never had issues. However, he has an accounting background and is very familiar with numbers and rulings.

Our CPA does it now because he has always done the taxes for our company and as the company has expanded, we need more expertise on the personal taxes as well. So now, my CPA does both.

I would avoid the tax places like H&R, etc that are set up in strip shopping centers.

You get what you pay for... what we pay is probably above the average but there is a lot more work that goes with it. Find a good CPA and work with them if you choose not to use TurboTax. Still.... my hubby would give Turbo Tax a good recommendation.

Don't let a few $$ keep you from making a good decision and end up with the IRS on you. It is not worth that..

God Luck.

I've always done our taxes myself and have used the Turbo Tax CD for a couple years now and have not had any problems. Of course, I go thru it all with a fine-tooth comb and read everything along the way. I would recommend it as long as your situation isn't too complicated. I'm actually going to H&R Block or someone this year because ours have just gotten too complicated and it gives me such a headache every year doing it all myself.

Good luck!!!

I have used Turbo Tax for 13 years and the only time I have had a problem was when I typed a social security number in wrong. Don't use H & R Block they are over priced and I have known people whose taxes were field wrong.

We love Turbo Tax, but we have never just gone to turbotax.com. We buy the one that you can file state and federal taxes on. It is worth it, and we have never had any issues. The first year we did this way I took the completed print outs to Liberty Tax, and they verified it was all correct before we submitted it. Never have had any problems!

I've used Turbo Tax the last 3 years and it's great. I always have my dad check over my numbers, but it's basically data entry...you can't go wrong.

I have usesd it for over 15 years and have not had any problems with it. In fact when hubby was a long distance truck driver there is a section that we used for his extra expenses and it would automatically give us the percentage allowed by the government. Many other places included H&R don't do that.

I get the CD and use it and not the free version. The program uploads and updates before you use it so that you have the latest info and changes when you file your taxes. You can also deduct the cost of the software from your taxes when you file (many people do not know that). You can file online or mail your end results to the government federal and state.

Good luck and enjoy.

I use it and it has made errors. Thing is the errors it has made would have cost me money if I didn't already know what I am doing but they wouldn't have caused any issues with filing.

If your taxes are not very complicated and you do as you are told you will be fine.

I've never had a problem with Turbo Tax, but I actually prefer a program called FreeTaxUsa.com because it's cheaper. If your taxes are tricky, however, you may have trouble with any online tax preparation service, because they aren't guiding you on which way to file, etc. The first time I attempted to file with an online program I had to file an amended tax return because I filed several forms in the wrong category, but I am self-employed and it gets a bit complicated.

I've used the FreeTaxUsa for the last few years and not had any problems. I believe federal has been free, and I pay 10 bucks to file my state returns.

We used it til our taxes got complicated.

Any time the IRS contacted me (I think only when I did the paper form), the letter told me what I needed to fix and I fixed it. I never had any oogie boogie experience with the IRS using Turbo Tax. My state also has an online form for state taxes for free, so you might be able to file that way, too.

Now, currently my DH is arguing with the IRS because they don't think our daughter exists because the CPA's assistant entered her name or SSN wrong. So even if you hire a human being, it might still get messed up.

I think it depends upon how complicated your taxes are and your knowledge and understanding of taxes.

I've used it for a few years, but I have had a couple of issues due to some of my children's investments. Turbo tax was useless in helping me with those.

Also, like any software program it has a few quirks and kinks that need to be worked out or improved. Overall, I would recommend you give it a try.

I know a few people who use Tax Act and recommend it.

I would not take my taxes to H&R Block. Many of their employees are not properly trained to handle complicated tax situations.

My husband prepares taxes, and I have to agree with you that H&R is very, very expensive. He's a CPA and usually charges about 1/2 of what H&R charges. A lot of people are willing to pay their exorbant rates because of the refund advance.

If you are not in a rush to get any refund you may have coming, I'd suggest finding a local tax preparer based upon word of mouth. With the hundreds of pages of new tax laws being released, it's becoming impossible to keep up with all the changes. He attends a week of classes each fall just to keep up with it all. One mistake or missed deduction can cost you many times more than the small fee you'd pay to a tax preparer. And most good preparers will cover any penalties you get IF they were the one that caused the error.

I use taxactonline.com.... it is a free website for filing federal taxes... I don't know for sure, but you may have to pay for state taxes.... (I am in Texas, and there aren't any state taxes, so I don't have experience with that).

I've never had any problem. The program asks you lots of questions, and you can get the deluxe version for very little.....

We've used Turbo Tax for several years now. We have one income, a couple tax-deductible charitable donations, and I have a Mary Kay business. The last straw for us was the first year we lived in CA when H&R Block cost us $500. I've done ours ever since.
