Hello Mommies,
I have a question for anyone that has been downthis road. A few weeks ago my husband and I took our 2 years old to a GI specialist for a tummy issue hes been having. The said that she thinks he has GURD. Do any of you Mommies have children that have this? and what is your Dr. doing to treat it? My son has been on liquid Pepsid for awhile now and we go to have another test done on Friday. One test has already shown that he has reflux. On Friday he is having a scope with a camera put down him so the Dr. can look and see what is going on. Anything that anyone can tell me will be helpful. Thanks so much.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We went and had the test done on Friday. He doesn't have ulsers and they are going to test for some other stuff. He did well with the test and only had a REALLY bad cough. The Dr. might put him on a different med. when we go back in two weeks.

My daughter has this. We discovered it at 2 wks. She's now 15 months and she still has it but it's rather controlled. We did have a problem at first getting a med that would work. She tried Zantac, Pepcid and finally Axid. Axid was the only one that would work well.

My son had this done when he was about a yr old too. He didnt have any complications with having the test done!

They told me at that time that he was allergic to dairy. So weve dealt with this and hes now 9

Hes been having stomach problems since hes been little too. Weve had him on previcid too,it didnt seem to help. They told us it could be acid reflux. Ive never been told Gerd.
Hes still having problems-he feels like hes going to throw up (like its in his throat) He said that his belly dont hurt-feel sick. He just feels like he is going to throw up. Its quite often.

He had both the Upper and Lower scopes done again-because he couldnt handle it anymore. So we took him to Akron Childrens and had it done and everything came back normal and good. No problems were found. So I Dont know what it is and what to do about it for him.

I myself have the same problem alot too and Ive had it for as long as I can remember. I never got checked for anything as a kid either so I dont know what my problem is either. Ive had just about every test done over the yrs and cant find what it is!

Never had a doc tell me that any of kids had GURD but I have dealt with it. Lay low on acids--citric and there are other less obvious ones out there. You have to be a label reader for along time. It is good to put the head up on the bed. Just put pillows or any kind of wedge UNDER the mattress.

We've been down this long, bumpy road with our 14 month old. Her first ten months of life were pretty rough (non-stop screaming, pain, spitting up, etc.). Zantac worked to take away the pain, but the spitting up continued so severely that she stopped gaining weight. What finally worked for us was Prilosec--it has helped the pain, and she spits up maybe two or three times a week (as opposed to ten or more times per day). We had the barium study done but not the scope, so I can't help you out there.

My best advice is to listen to your gut and ask questions. You know your child best. If you feel that he is not improving on the medication, don't be afraid to talk to your doctor. GERD can be very tricky to properly diagnose and treat (several medication options are out there with different actions). It might take some trial and error to find the right treatment. Good luck!

You can look GERD's up online. It has a lot to do with acid reflux and such. I'm thinking the dr. probably suggested, or at least should have suggested, putting your child's bed at an incline, by putting a wegd pillow, or a regular pillow under the head of the mattress. This will decrease the reflux at night. Hold your child in as close to a sitting position as possible for eating, not so much reclined and keep him in a sitting position, or at least do not lay him flat at all, for at least 30 minutes after meals. These will all help him be more comfortable. It's actually a rather common thing for babies to have because they are not totally developed and so small that the gastric contents easily splash back up into the esophagus, causing the reflux. I hope you find out more and all turns out to be ok!

Hi M..

My son is 13 now nut I know EXACTLY what you are going through. I found out when he was just a few hours old that he had GURD (severely). They did a series of test (TOP) sticks out in my mind (when they irritate his belly with apple juice) and they had a tube up through his nose down into the belly. Unfortunately, his was bad enough that he had to have surgery at 2 weeks because he kept vomiting and sucking it into his lungs and stopped breathing several times. However, if your sons is not severe, they will most likely keep treating him with the pepsid or zantac or one of the newer medications out now. I was told that most babies outgrow GURD. It happens simply because the valve at the top of the belly is just slighty under-developed. Hope this helps! Good luck. Let us know what happens!

I do not have a child with this problem, but I myself have the same story. Avoiding certain foods and drink help, carbonated bev.'s, citrus juice, vineger(katsup), tomato anything greasy foods - just think of the PH balance. I have had to have surgery because I was not treated for a long time, my mother ignored the symptoms when I was growing up and I put up with the acid indegestion, treating it with Malox-bland diet, way too long. The "flap" at the opening of my stomach was completely eaten away and I had whats called "Berretts Esophogus" (sp?), a pre-cancerous condition. I don't tell you this to scare you, just to let you know it's important to get this taken care of. But I wouldn't let the doctor put him on "Reglan". It has a major side effect of depression, I know from experience. I researched it to find out how it works on the body and it works on the nervous system, which makes sense then that it can cause depression. With your son so young and still developing, I'd be afraid of what it could do to the growing nervous system. You might find that the doctors will tell you that Reglan does not cause depression, etc., but don't buy into it, I've found most doctors do not know-let alone research-the side effects of drugs. The pharmacist, (sp?) is always the person to ask, they know way more than anyone about the drugs they process. Also it should be taken for only 1-3 months and you have to wheen off it, don't stop taking it abruptly. Make sure when they do the scoping, that they sedate him, insist if you have to. I had to go get checked 6 months after my surgery and the doctor chose not to, it was a nasty experience and I have since been told by other doctors that his actions were totally unnecessary and mean. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

My son as well had this problem when he was very young this is the first i've heard of it showing up in an older child, but he had a scope done as well, boy was that unpleasant to say the least and he was hospitalized for a couple days as well because the vomit that would come up his throat made him stop breathing, not sevearly but enough so he turned blue around the lips a couple time. even then he was just on a liquid zantac or something of that sort and only till he turned one. a big disadvantage you have at this age wiht your son is you have to watch what he eats, if he is in to much pain to eat regularly or he is vomiting to much he could end up malnurished, another mommy i know had to have a feeding tube put in her 4 year old for this reason. make sure you are giving him his medicine and if you are having problems wiht him being in pain or keeping things down keep track of what he is eating for a month or so and see if you can pinpoint what is causeing the symptoms. this could be something that a medication fixes right up or it could not be it really just depends on the child. little things that help, first and foremost if he is hungry feed him, smaller meals more often are less likely to upset a little tummy. avoid feeding him right before bed or elevate his the head of his bed so he isn't laying flat, gravity can do wonders for keeping things in a tummy. ask your doctor to if it is afe to give him tums or similar things at his age if he does end up in pain after eating it could help or even a glass of milk, the calcium can help. hopefully it ends up not being serious and he does outgrow it, i'll keep you in my prayers. good luck.
