My 8 year old daughter has been sick for over a year now. She will have nausea/ vomiting followed by diarrhea. Luckily, it isn't constant but does occur at least once every couple of weeks. She has no other symptoms. She will just get a tummy ache and after she has gone through the pattern she is fine. The doctor had suggested we take her off gluten which we have (8 wks. now). She went 3 weeks without a spell but now is going through all of this again. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what to try or ask the doctor for? I’m at a loss as to what to do.

What can I do next?

I would also say allergy test. Keep in mind, for a gluten sensitivity to show they must be on a gluten diet. If you remove gluten from the diet it will not show up in the blood test. You can also test for a genetic marker though. I really like this book..The Gluten Connection by Shari Lieberman. She explains in detail the problem with gluten what could also be the problem, the history of it and why there is more of a problem now than say 20 years ago. She also has a section of if after going gluten free the symptoms come back.

When my son was diagnosed gluten intolerant, I put us all on a gluten free diet. I am pretty positive both my daughter and I have a problem with gluten but since going gluten free, the ped's have said I would not be able to test for it unless I was to go back to gluten for a while. As others have said though, it is very common to get gluten in things you didn't expect. You could have an endoscopy done by a ped. G.I specialist. It is super quick and then you can have some answers.

take notes... write down what she eats.. what she drinks and her tummy symptons.. something is causing this.. I have a sensitivity to garlic.. if I eat garlick.. I have horrible stomach pains and diahrrea.. my husband (at age 45) finally figured out that milk gives him gas and diahrrea.. for years he said all men fart.. but no milk .. no farting.. amazing..

see if you can figure out what in her diet is causing this.. take her off the normal allergens.. milk eggs soy wheat... give her a limited diet until the symptoms are gone and then gradually add dfoods badk in ..

Take her to a GI doctor (gastreoentologist? sorry I can't spell!) they will run a full work up, including Celiacs and other allergy tests.

how about a full allergy screening? or a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist? I was going to say gluten too but also keep in mind it can take about 6-8 months for it to totally be out of her system. I'd definitely recommend the testing though because if you do one thing at a time like this, it could be forever before you find out what's causing it.

Poor thing. I hope you find answers soon!

Gluten takes a LONG time to work its way out, and it's hidden in nearly everything. The next most common thing would be lactose and/or milk proteins and/or soy proteins, all of which is also hidden in nearly everything.

Allergy tests might be a good idea, but keep in mind that most test for immunological responses. Not all food intolerances will produce a typical immunological response.

I was thinking gluten before finishing the question. That being said are you sure that she didn't get any gluten even accidentally. I have a friend who needs a different jar of jelly because her husband makes sandwiches and dipping the knife into the jar after spreading on the bread is enough to contaminate the jar with gluten and set her off. It is a food allergy (if that's what it is) and even the tiniest amount of gluten will be enough. I think it does sound like some kind of food allergy. If gluten is ruled out I would test for other allergens.

Has she been checked for food allergies? Is their a pattern of when it is....I knew someone whose daughter had those symptoms and it was her way of expressing nervousness. Could be school, a play date, a test, etc....her mother hated it, but knew what caused it and just was ready for it.
All the traditional stomach things I'm thinking of I don't think children can get. Acid reflux, but not for the diarrhea. Gluten or food allergies is what makes the most sense. Notice if there is a pattern of what she is eating. If you don't find an answer, seek a pediatric gasterentologist.

My son was having similar problems. His pedi did a simple blood test that included gluten tolerance, food allergy testing, complete metabolic panel, etc. With all those tests negative, it was time to find a GI who sees peds. He's ordered stool sample testing (no results yet) and put him on probiotics and a med for when he starts his stomach problems. Make an appt w/ a GI who sees kids now, as it can take several weeks or even months to actually get in to see one. We are going to Dr. Russo in Frisco.

My friends son had similar symptoms.....I told her about Dr. Chalmers at Chalmers Wellness and he is fine now. Not sure what all was wrong but they corrected it naturally. Dr. Chalmers has helped me and my children with several issues that regular MD's can't help with. Insurance more than likely won't cover it but I am pretty sure he can help you.
