For personal reason I waited until my twins were 2 to have it done. I had it done one morning, and I was back in school the next morning. Yes I did have pain pills but I didn't need them, the most that I needed was an Advil. I don't regret having it done.

For me it was the best thing I could have done. It was very easy and I have never had any kind of side effects. Also, it's so much easier than any other kind of birth control.

I had one done 13 years ago after my youngest son was born. I was 100% certain I was done having children and being pregnant. I did NOT want to go through all that again. I haven't had ANY issues at all and have LOVED not having to worry about getting pregnant again.

My doctor removed an inch long section of my tubes AND cauterized (aka burned) the ends shut. My periods and cramping have been what they've always been (which is EXTREMELY irregular and painful) when I'm not on the pill.

I had it done about 18 hours after my son was born and aside from some stomach pain the first day, after that I was back home and back to doing what I always did. Mine also went in through my belly button and you can't even tell it and I even have a belly ring and no one has ever noticed the tubal scar.

If you're sure you're done I say go for it.

I had this done a LONG time ago...my "Baby" is now 26 years old...so the surgery is probably even better now than it was then. I went home the day after my surgery ( 3rd day after giving birth)...I had no problems, as far as I can tell it did not effect my periods, my libido...no issues at all. If this is what you and your husband feel sure you want to do...I would say go for it...but be sure...it isn't easily reversed!!

I had a tubal after our 2nd son back in March. He was born late at night, so it was done over 24hrs later, but I went home the same day it was done. I didn't have time for an epidural when he was born so I ended up getting a spinal for the surgery. I had no complications. I had pain the first few days where I needed percocet, but after that for a couple weeks the incision itself was the only thing that was painful, and that was only to touch. My incision is in my belly button so you can't even really see it. I don't have any issues at this point, but my hormones are still out of whack due to breastfeeding - hopefully once I'm done nursing I still won't have any issues, but time will tell. And my doctor put clamps on the tubes, didn't tie them or cut them or anything. I don't know if thats standard practice now or what, but that's what she said they do at the office now. Good luck!!! Just make sure you are absolutely done having kids is all I want to add! I know I'm done :)

I'm having one in October. I've had an IUD since having our son almost 5 years ago. Since it needs to come out we had to make a decision on what needs to be done. I talked to the Dr about other methods, specifically Essure, but I like that having a Tubal is effective immediately. No alternate method for 3 months, no follow up to make sure it worked. Effective immediately. That was the tipping point. Oh, and it was the cheapest option with our insurance.

Children are a blessing! Think long and hard about this. You may enjoy them so much in 3 or 4 years, (as they get older!) you may choose more. Or your hubby may want a boy, or who knows. My husband was done, and many times I wish we hadn't.

I had a tubal ligation after my second daughter. We knew we only wanted 2 and I thought it was easier for me to get it done instead of him. So, I did it. I have no regrets. I delivered my daughter vaginally in a room where you labor/deliver/reside.... I was able to take time and hold her and bond with her before I had it done. Then, when they took her for her tests and shots, etc., I was wheeled down the hallway. They increased my epidural and I actually slept through the procedure (even though I wanted to be awake). I was tired from being up all night. Once I was back in the room, they brought my daughter back to me. I think it was easy and I had minimal pain. Of course, I had a little discomfort at the sight of the incision. So, my only advice to you...#1 bring baggy clothes and ones that you can have rest below your belly button and #2 realize that your stomach will be more bloated afterwards due to the surgery. But, all in all, I would highly recommend this. Why should the husband have to go through it just because I delivered 2 babies? (Arguments of others) If I am going to be in the hospital anyways, let's do it! And, when I was done with my 6 weeks recovery, we were able to resume a normal sex life without fear of pregnancy! :)

I read all you responses & I just wanted to give you something to consider. I did this surgery 6 months ago when I delivered our daughter. However, everyone asked said it was not painful. In deed it was! I had my 9lb 3 oz baby & was taken to surgery till noon the next day. I was in so much pain. I guess it's not as painful if you have a c-section. I didnt know so I did it after delivering normal & I had a tough time recovering. It was the worst pain. I believe it lasted about 4-7 days. I wasnt expecting that since my doctor said I would be fine but I didnt feel fine. After I recovered it was the best decision we made & I have a little tiny scar in my belly button but It doesnt bother me. Hope this helps. Good luck & congrats on your soon to be baby girl :)

I had it done after my second was born. I would suggest you have it done upon delivery rather than scheduling it later.

I will tell you what my doctor told me...cramping can be worse after the procedure (birth control pills actually help with the cramping) and I can tell you that for me, that has been the understatement of the century!

Other than that, I have had no problems.

I had a tubal ligation after two and it caused such a horrible hormone imbalance that I ended up reversing it 3 years later. It was like PMS x 100. Including cramps for 3 days, bleeding for a week and a half, migraines and feeling like I was going to have a nervouse breakdown.

So this is not an answer to your question exactly, but have you considered a vasectomy for hubby? I slways planned on tubal ligation post kiddos as well, but both of our doctors said that a vasectomy is much safer and lower risk than a tubal ligation. We did our own research and it tracked with that assertion. So our game plan was if I needed an emergency C-section, I would go ahead with a tubal ligation (no sence in both of us having surgery) and otherwise he was going to have a vasectomy. Some people have asked him why he would volunteer for this and his response - my wife has had to deal with 2 pregnancys and 2 births, it was my turn to step up.

He did it 3 weeks post delivery and besides some local swellimg that resolved quickly has had no complications. It is an out patient procedure, very quick and he didn't even need all the prescribed pain meds.

So, just something to think about.

Also, I am sorry you have to defend your choice to be done having children. This is one area in which people seem to think it is ok to treat you like you are not capable of rational thought. I can't tell you how many people have told me we would change our minds about wanting more than 2 children. I would have told you when I was 13 years old that no one would ever convence me to have more than 2 children and I still feel the same way. Children are a blessing and family planning is a healthy, mature way to make sure you can take good care of those children you have blessed with - good for you!!!

Whatever you decide to do, I hope it goes well!!!!!

Check out the Essure proceedure. It can be done as an outpatient and it has very little discomfort. My BF had it done and went out to eat afterwards. She had some very mild cramps that day but nothing else. The doc went back a bit later and pushed dye through her tubes and the block was complete, nothing got through.

They doc puts a spring like device in the tube, it is coated with a medication that makes the cells grow and adhere to the spring. It makes it's own plug.

Hello C.. Tubal ligation is an invasive procedure which involves deep anesthesia. I had an Essure procedure, similar to a tubal ligation that also closes the fallopian tubes. The procedure involved light sedation, walk in/walk out in 3 hours, and NO recovery period. The Dr. inserts flexible coils transvaginally (no incision, no stitches) and places the coils in the fallopian tubes. Scar tissue forms around the coils which blocks the eggs from continuing into the uterus. No eggs make it through the tubes, no chance of fertilization! I needed to use an alternate form of birth control for 3 months in order for the scar tissue to form that blocks the egg's travel. I had NO cramps, NO recovery issues -- literally pain free. I recommend you google "Essure" and check it out. Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Congratulations in advance on your baby girl!

I felt the same way you do...I had a lot of very logical reasons for only wanting two. I had a c-section and had the tubal at the same time. My only side effect is slightly heavier period. Very little cramping or PMS, but then that may have nothing to do with it. Very pleased with my decision. If God means for me to have more, he will find a way, but that doesn't mean I have to help out!! lol

Some will argue that your decision is too logical and should be based on emotion. Yes, I have brief moments when my 20m or 7yo does something supercool when I think, 'I could do this again!'. Then reality hits me and I realize I made the best decision.

I had a tubal ligation over 30 years ago, when I was 31. I had one fantastic child and knew I would not have any more children. I have had no problems with the ligation at all, and never regretted making that choice.

My mom had horrible experiences after and ended up with a full hysterectomy by age 29... She was 23 when she had her tubes tied. She married at 18, had me at almost 20 and my sister and the tubal at 23. I am positive I posted on this before.... Let me see if I can get a link!

I had no problems as far as the surgery. It did seem to cause some premenstrual issues and maybe a hormonal imbalance. But with supplementation, I was able to overcome all of that. Definitely glad I did it.
