TryingToConceive And Think I Have a Hernia from Previous Surgical Incision...

I had an unwanted surgery December 2009 (csection delivery of my 2nd baby) which left me with a low scar obviously. My husband and I are trying to get pregnant with our 3rd child and this week I have realized the LeftLowerQuadrant pain I am having by my scar is most likely a hernia. I started having pain in the area last August and I know that I have no kidney, ovary, fallopian tube or uterus on my Left side sooooo can't be much besides muscle/bowel causing the problem. I don't want another surgery (thus will be a VaginalBirthAfterCsection) at least not until I am actually on maternity leave.

Anyone been through this and have advice? I'm really not sure where I want to go with this but it is becoming an almost daily pain...

***Sigh*** Here is an add: I have only one kidney and half a uterus. Both my babies were born prematurely, the first vaginally w/out issues and the second a forced surgery because she was breech and the doctor didn't know how to deliver vaginally. I think it's pretty selfish of us at all to want another baby period but we have the approval of the kidney and OB specialists and are going for it. I am thinking that I will discuss it with my midwife and internal med doc but don't really plan to derail the conception plans as we've been working on this since January, had conceived then and miscarried in February. I'm really not one to space out my kids very far and this is getting long in between. I'm really looking for others with the same issue because right now mine seems minor though noticeable...

What can I do next?

You should NOT try and conceive, before you know if a surgery is needed. Having to do a surgery while you are pregnant is risky. And, it's something you can avoid. It's NEVER a good idea to conceive, when you have a known medical issue that's not being taken care of. Your body is not healthy right now and you could end up needing to fix it while your pregnant. That would be stressful for your baby. Why would you possibly put a baby through that? This really shouldn't be an issue of what you "want." Daily pain is not a good thing, you can't just wait this out, because it's what you "want." Your body is screaming at you, that there is something wrong. Don't ignore it.

I have a friend who was having intestine issues and didn't "want" to address it. She conceived, anyway. They had to preform a surgery on her AND take her baby prematurely. Her baby had a whole host of problems, simply because her mom didn't "want" a surgery before she conceived. Her child was perfectly healthy int he womb, and had to be taken early. She STILL has problems and major delays. Pretty selfish of her mom.

Daily pain sounds serious! There are things in that area besides what you have listed. A doctor should be able to diagnose you promptly enough.

Are you planning to see a dr. about the pain before you continue trying to get pregnant? I'm not a dr. or nurse, but I think the pain could (maybe) be caused by adhesions from the surgery. Of course, I could be wrong, but it would be good to have an official diagnosis- whatever it is, before getting pregnant. I would imagine it could be much more complicated to treat if you are pregnant and it turns out you do need surgery or something. Also, if the pain gets worse while you are pregnant and the docs have to figure out what's wrong with you, they're not going to want to do X-rays or a CT scan. Ultrasound only shows so much....
Here's a little info about adhesions:

I wish you all the best :)

I have some advice-spell some of this out-gals my age don't do acronyms! Is LLQ-lower left quadrant? VBAC? I would have surgery before I get pregnant-you will not be able to do the lifting involved with a newborn if you have the surgery while on ML. Good luck and take care!

Another possibility could be Irritable Bowel Syndrome - I have severe pain in my LLQ and my doctor has diagnosed it as IBS. only thing to do is adjust your diet to minimize the "flair ups" - but it's a possibility you should check before assuming you have a hernia due to a c-section. BTW both mine were c-sections - my first was breech and quite literally stuck in my hips, it took a lot of work to "unwedge" him - there was no possible way to do a vaginal birth with him... the IBS came after #2 - doc told me "things change" when you are pregnant - it stresses the digestive system and, sometimes, causes problems after the fact.

Also - you said you miscarried in Feb - I was told to wait at least 3 months before trying to conceive again - your body needs to recover from the lost pregnancy - why not use that time to get this pain checked out?

Good Luck - but you really should discuss this with your doctor.
