Trying to Get Pregnant While Breastfeeding

My last question in the subject area got cut off. I was just wondering if any one was 42 and over got pregnant while breastfeeding? I am not pregnant but would like to get pregnant. I don't want to deny the son I have his nutrition. He is not ready to be weaned 100%. I know that you can get pregnant but I have not heard of anyone in their 40's who got pregnant while breastfeeding.

What can I do next?

Hi R.,

I got pregnant with my second while breastfeeding my first and I am 40 and just gave birth to my second two weeks ago. My son was 10 months old when I got pregnant and I did stop breastfeeding him because I could feel my uterus contracting when I fed him and I was afraid of a miscarry.

All the best to you!!

Blessings,
T.

I am 34 & just got pregnant breast feeding!! So it can happen. My son just turned 1 last week. I weaned him b/c I worried about anything happening to the unborn baby....due to my uterus contracting while he nursed. Have you gotten your period yet? If so, you should be ovulating each month.

If you are nursing your two year old I doubt he is nursing enough to prevent you from getting pregnant. (This is only my opinion) Have you gotten your period? I nursed my son until he was a little over 2 1/2 and by this time he was only doing it in the evening. Did you have problems getting pregnant the first time? I do know that many Drs. don't recommend breastfeeding while pregnant because I believe it may cause a miscarriage but that is a big debate as well. Good Luck. I know when I got pregnant with my second, I was so sore, there was no way I could continue to let my son nurse so I'm glad I weaned him. I don't think he would have ever given it up on his own so I weaned him very slowly and it was not as difficult as I had imagined.

Hi R., I wasn't 40 when I had baby #3 but I was actively breastfeeding my 2nd child when I became pregnant. I breastfed until I was 2 months pregnant with baby #3 only because breastfeeding was becoming very painful. I know you can breastfeed while pregnant. I also know that milk production decreases while pregnant so while you may not be ready to wean, your body will automatically do what it has to do to prepare for the next baby. I would continue breastfeeding! Your son will stop when he's ready...or when your body stops producing. Enjoy this time and good luck.

Exclusive breastfeeding (meaning no supplementing and no pumping) offers the same protection as the pill in the first six months post partum (99% effective). This is called Lactational Amennorhea, or LAM (meaning you DO NOT have your period). If you have your period within that first six months, then LAM does not apply and you likely are fertile. After six months, the efficacy goes down mainly becasue baby is introduced to solids and is nursing less. Being that your son is two years old, he is likely not nursing enough to cause LAM. I personally don't think you need to wean him completely in order to get pregnant. If you are not having regular menstrual cycles yet or are having a difficult time getting pregnant, then it may be due to somehting else, but it is not likely the breast feeding, given your son's age.

I don't know about this LAM thing but I got my period just 6 weeks after my daughter was born. I was ovulating too as I know when I'm ovulating. I nursed exclusively for her first year and continued till she was 4. I menstruated the entire time regularly, every 28 days ovulating each month too. I'm 42.
