Trying to Get Pregnant - Rock Hill,SC

I've been trying to get pregnant for about a year and a half now. I've tried eating healthy and exercising, no luck. I have also had irregualr periods all my life. Could that be what is stopping me? I don't know what else to do, or how to go about doing anything else. Do fertility test work? When do I take it since I have irregular periods? Is there anything else I should try? Someone told me to take prenatal vitamins; does that work?

What can I do next?

Decide you dont want to have any children yet and plan an elaborate cruise for about 6 mos from now. You will cancel the cruise because you will be pregnant.

Go see your doctor. If you have irregular periods chances are you aren't ovulating. When trying to get pregnant I had learned that if you go 36 days or more between periods it's very likely you aren't ovulating. Talk to your OBGYN about what's going on. That is the best place to start, and he/she can order some blood tests to determine if your hormone levels are high enough and direct you on the right course. I wish you luck! It took us over a year to conceive the first time, so I feel your frustration!

If your periods are irregular you should see your OB/GYN to rule out any infertility issues...If you are good to go and DH has no problems...Then have fun....I like Grandma T's recommendation :)

The question is is whether you have actually been trying or if you have been doing the "happy accident" routine [my husband's term]. Being healthy helps, taking a prenatal vitamin or other folic acid supplement helps. To move from the happy accident route to actually trying I started taking my basal body temperature every morning. After that we conceived during the 4th month of trying. I used on online tracker (fertilityfriend.com?) for the graphic but still have the paper chart I wrote the temperature on every morning.

Definitely take the ovulation tests, it has instructions on when to start. I had to buy a second kit because I didn't ovulate until day 18. When it says you're ovulating, you have sex. If you are irregular, you may have to do this every month.

My personal tips are:
1. Do it missionary with a pillow under you to elevate your pelvis.
2. Let him "go" first, than you "go" after.
3. Stay laying on back with pelvis elevated for 30 minutes.

It worked for us 2 times on the first try!

If you have been trying to get pregnant for a year and a half, you need to schedule an appointment with your ob/gyn and discuss possible barriers to getting pregnant. Your doctor will run tests on you and possibly your husband to make sure there are no conditions preventing pregnancy. Most likely it is related to your irregular periods, though, and your doctor will be able to help with that too.

Prenatal vitamins should be taken when you are actively trying to conceive, but the biggest reason is to get extra folic acid. However, you will find if you compare labels, a lot of multivitamins for women will have identical percentages of the same vitamins found in the prenatals (but the normal multivitamins are usually cheaper). Good luck!

You should go to your OBGYN and they can give you Clomid to get your ovulation started. Then, use the fertility tests. If your periods are irregular, purchasing the Ovulations kits will tell you nothing because you have to count how many days into your cycle you are.

You should take prenatal vitamins just to make sure you are as healthy as can be; they will not help you with your fertility.

Good luck

I believe sometimes we can try too hard. I'm will start out by saying I'm not irregular. I'm very regular. I track everything on mymonthlycyles.com. I knew my fertile time and exactly when I ovulated. Nothing. So I started to think maybe it wouldn't happen. I stopped tracking after my January period . . . just realized this weekend I was a week late!! Like I said, i don't have the irregular issue - my sil does, and she worked with her doctor and took some drugs (not sure what) and with that help, easily had 2 children.

Ive heard that if you are under 35 that your Dr will suggest waiting/trying for 1 year before they will offer a helping hand and 35 and after to go and see them about trouble conceiving at the 6 month mark of trying.
Good Luck

I have two friends that tried for over a year... They went to the doc and they discovered their husbands had to have something tweaked. It was an in and out procedure with no down time at work. Both got pregnant the next month. I had another friend who's hormones were firing off too early in her cycle. They gave her meds and she conceived shortly after. This was after TTC for years. Go to the doctor. Prenatal vitamins will not help you conceive but they will help ensure your body has the nutrients to support a healthy pregnancy. Best of luck!

I wish I had answers for you. I can share that you should be taking prenatals for a year before pregnancy. It makes sure you have the nutrients but most importantly it combats neural tube defects. There are a number of factors that can affect infertility. Age, not knowing your cycle, being under-weight or over-weight. When I was trying to stay pregnant I was reading how difficult and precise it all is I wondered how we manage to get pregnant at all. Your OB-GYNE should be one of your first stops on this path. They can get you informed on what you need, do tests, refer you to specialist. They will also ensure when you succeed you are getting proper prenatal care. Best wishes.

get an ovulation kit and try it for a few months. If nothing happens make an appointment with your doctor to find out if there is an issue. You should take prenatal vitamins just in case you get pregnant so your baby starts out with a healthy environment but they don't help you get pregnant.

If you have an irregular period it is possible you are not ovulating on your own or, if you are ovulating, it could be sporadic. If you are not ready to discuss things with a doctor yet you could try ovulation prediction strips (I think there is also a digital test for ovulation). You could get enough test strips to test everyday from one period to another to make sure you are ovulating.

Yes you should be taking prenatal vitamins.

Personally, if I were in your situation, I would visit my doctor to discuss possible testing and I would also have my partner have a semen analysis.

Good luck.
