Trying to Find a Good Ob/gyn for Our Next Pregnancy

My husband and I have a 2 yr old son, whom we had when we lived down in Owatonna, MN. Down there there was one clinic and one hospital. All normal pregnancies used a general practice doctor. I went ahead and used my female GP doctor for my pregnancy. Lucked out because she's the one EVERYONE in town uses for their pregnancies. She was awesome and down to earth. We loved her so much.

Now, 2 yrs later, we're in South St. Paul and we are planning our next pregnancy. I'm looking around at ALL the options and it's very overwelming. There are TONS of clinics, different hospitals and too many options. I looked at all the hospitals and I would like to go to Woodwinds to delivery. The thing is I suffered from pre-clamsia (sp) last delivery, I delivered prematurally and there was calcification on the placenta. I believe that makes this next prenancy at risk for those same things, but I'm not sure. Anyways, I'd like to go to an OB/GYN this time around, just in case. It appears that Woodwinds wants you to see a Nurse Midwife. Is it possible to see a doctor?? And could anyone recommend one?? I would appreciate any help.

I would recommend any of the docs at Adefris and Toppin. They are in the clinic area attached to Woodwinds. I saw Dr. McKeand regularly (she's no longer there), but delivered with Dr. Toppin - both of whom were great.

I just delivered our second child at woodwinds last week with dr. Mahan from the Comprehensive Healthcare for women group, located in woodbury as well. I have been seeing her for about 10 years, and have always been truly happy. She has a very calm, and gentle way about her even when the nurses were frazzled in my quick delivery. And you couldn't ask for more friendly office staff.

Comprehensive Healthcare for Women in Woodbury!! Dr. Mahan was an amazing OB. I delivered at woodwinds with her, not a midwife, the nurses were very helpful and much more open to all of my decisions than I thought they would be. Mahan is a part of an incredible staff, men and women, who would all have been great to go through the birthing process with. I had complications late in pregnancy and their office was always helpful and quick to respond.

I have heard only wonderful things about Woodwinds and their midwife team. I bet you could find an OB who delivers there if that's what you want, but you may want to look at the midwives. They have lots of training and, in my experience, I've gotten much more personal and better medical care from midwives during pregnancy than OB's. Changes in diet etc can totally change your risk factors for a second pregnancy and I even know a few friends who didn't change much at all and had a fine and healthy pregnancy for their second, so don't just assume you'll be high risk this time. You may want to check out Dr. Brewer's work on diet and pre-enclampsia. The research is pretty impressive. Good luck as you search around for your care provider!

I also would recommend Comprehensive Healthcare for Women in Woodbury. I used to see Sam Arnold whom I saw someone already mentioned but now I see Jackie Mahan who has also been mentioned both very good Dr's. Sam saved my life 11 years ago with my 1st daughter and Dr Mahan helped me through my 2nd high risk pregnancy, she was very attentive and didn't miss a beat. However she was unable to deliver my son as she was on vacation and Dr Bourghs delivered and he was absolutly awesome as well.

I would highly recommend Dr. Sam Arnold from the private practice Comprehensive Healthcare for Women, in Woodbury. He is my regular OB/GYN and was really great throughout my pregnancy. He also was the one to deliver my daughter at Woodwinds last year. The practice that he works at is great. I was seen on-time for all of my appointments and the other staff were great too.

I had my baby girl (now 18 mos.) at Woodwinds and it was a wonderful experience. Dr. Jennifer Landers (family medicine) delivered my baby. It's great to have a family medicine doctor because she is my personal doctor, delivered my baby and now she's my baby's doctor so she knows the whole family and all of our history!

My mom has also worked as an RN at Woodwinds since it opened - she loves working there and only has good things to say about it.

I see Dr. Ron Less with Metropolitan Obstetrics and Gynecology, who's main office is in Maplewood (on Beam Ave., on the opposite side of St. John's Hospital), but he also sees patients out of their DT St. Paul location. The key is to find an OB that has privileges at the hospital you're interested in... he delivers at St. John's in Maplewood, St. Joseph's and United in St. Paul and Woodwinds in Woodbury. We live in Stillwater and chose to deliver both times at St. John's (we wanted a NICU on site in the event of an emergency, and didn't want to have to be transferred out separate from baby if a NICU was needed, as I'd heard happen many times). We had our son, and when 21 months old we had our twins, who are now 10 1/2 months. As it turns out, our twin son had premature lungs at birth, and was able to be cared for in the NICU on site. I was originally referred to him after we moved from Eden Prairie, and coming off of a miscarriage (with the help of a specialist) and needing to find an OB to do a D&C. He was fantastic through everything and can't recommend him enough.

There are OB/Gyns at Woodwinds... Check out Adefris & Toppins, a clinic on the Woodwinds campus. Two of their female OB/Gyns were just mentioned in Minnesota Monthly's "Best Doctors for Women", with the voting being done by other Twin Cities doctors.

I know you are not interested in Nurse Midwives at this point, but I will mention that my Nurse Midwife, Stephanie Johnson, practices w/them. She is amazing!

Adefris and Toppin Womens Specialists is located in the clinics adjoined to Woodwinds. They were named two of the Minnesotas best doctors and I loved everything about the clinic. I also loved Woodwinds. Good luck with your pregnancy!
