Trying to Figure Out Hearing Test Results... Anyone with Experience Please Help.

OK, I am confused by some things in my son's hearing test results that were mailed to me. Any one out there know how to translate this into common non-hearing expert english? There is one sentence that is causing me trouble, and I think I am being paranoid and just reading it wrong. It reads, "Minimal responses to soundfield testing were obtained within normal limits at 500Hz and 1,000Hz and in a mild to moderate hearing loss range at 2,000Hz and 4,000Hz when listening with both ears."
I am sure I probably sound really dumb asking this, but does that say that there is hearing loss here, or is this a normal hearing result? I swear I feel like I am reading Greek when I should probably be able to know what that means.

UPDATE: I guess I should have said, my son is 18 months. I would call the clinic where we had his testing done, but they are closed until Jan. 3rd. So of course it is driving me batty.

What can I do next?

I suggest that you call the clinic that did the test and ask them. I recently took a hearing test and based on a similar phrase in my report I think it sounds like they're saying he has a mild to moderate hearing loss in the 2,000Hz and 4,000Hz range. He's in normal range in the 500 and 1,000Hz. But what that actually means, I don't know. I don't know what is the normal range of sounds to be heard. Call the clinic.

You might also get more information by googling hearing test or hearing loss or normal hearing range, etc.

I am a nurse that has worked in ENT. The first important question is how old is your son? This is most likely a normal test depending on his age.

Call them or your ped for specific, however I just had my daughter tested, and she had something similar although I don't remember the ranges. She had mild loss in the very high range that most people have hearing loss at because that is the very high pitch that mostly dogs can hear. At first when he showed me the results i thought the same thing, but he said it was normal and the loss is at the very very high range that most people can't hear at.

That is crazy that the doctor didn't call you to explain the results. That is terrible!
Speaking from experience, sounds like there is high frequency hearing loss. My son was born with Moderate high frequency hearing loss.

You should try to google that exact thing (mild to moderate HL range at 2,000Hz and 4,000Hz) and see what you come up with. From personal experience, the earlier hearing loss is detected the better. Speech won't be an issue if there is a hearing loss and hearing aids are used early on. My son received them at 4 months old.
I am not saying that your child will need hearing aids, I don't know. I will say that it is really good to get a second opinion.
I'm not sure where you got this testing done but, if I could give you a little advice, from one Mom to another...try to schedule an BAER or Evoked response with an ENT/ Audiology at Childrens, even if it is a drive. They have wonderful doctors and you will have something to compare the current results to. My son had so many hearing tests done, so do not just have one and be done with it. Have your child tested periodically. My son ended up having a progressive hearing loss and eventually lost his hearing all together. We decided to get the Cochlear Implant for him and he is signing and speaking beautifully!!
Did your son have a tympanogram to check and see if there was any fluid present?
I hope for the best! Keep on top of the issue and everything will be fine!
Good luck.

Call your ped he should at least be able to put your mind to rest. Also, why would the clinic just mail you the results? Why didn't the audiologist discuss the results when you had the test done? I had my son tested at 2.5 through Lake County CEDOL and knew immediately.

if he had the ABR test done those are not very accurate even so yes your son seems to have a hearing loss in the highest frequencies which won't affect his speech. they should have not mailed you the results, they need to be read to you. good luck
