Trying to Conceive and Dealing with False Pregnancy Symptoms

I just turned 39 in August, and I had a IUD removed the end of Feb. 2006, with the intent of conceiving another sibling for my 30 month old son to grow up with. I have had at least 3 different occasions where I beleived I was pregnant because of symptoms you'd normally have when you are pregnant. One month I had these symptoms about a week or more before my expected period. Then in August I had symptoms and was a day late, and just recently I was 3-4 days late. The symptoms I've had are: trouble eating most foods/reduced appetite, urinating more than often, feeling the need for more rest, than usual. Everytime I take a HP test they come out negative, and I also went to the doctor after one of the occasions, and the blood and preg test came out negative. I have also checked out healthy enough to have more children.
I know this not just in my head, I have 3 healthy children without complications, and have never experience this in my life.
I know there are other women out there that have experienced what I am going thru, and would like to hear encouragement/advice! Thanks!

So What Happened?

I want to let everyone know I appreciate their thoughts, advice, and for sharing their own experiences with me.
I have ordered the book 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility' by Toni Weschler.
Also I'll have other ideas to fall back on if I should need them.
I believe and haven't given up on my faith that I will eventually conceive. (Hoping sooner-than later!)
Another idea about ovulating I heard (don't know if it is a proven fact-the doctor seemed to act like she didn't believe in it), was that as women get older, toward 40 and on, they don't ovulate as often.

If anyone has any other ideas or comments, I'd be glad to read them.
God bless you all,
M.

I understand what you are going through it was so easy with my son but it took me 11 1/2 years to have another child and i thought quite a few times that i was pregnant but my doctor told me that what it was is that i wanted another child so much that my body was having false pregnancies. So he told me to just relax and stop trying so hard, I had my cycle so messed up and woman don't want to hear this but he said that it was all my mind playing tricks on my body.I didn't want to believe him but i tried it and it worked i got pregnant for my daughter.

I was on the nuvaring for several months before deciding to have another child in May 2006. My period was fine for June and July and I was expecting my period Sept. 5th but it didn't show and I was extremely tired like the previous pregnancies. I wassick to my stomach and had to eat small portions every two hours to keep from feeling sick. My breasts became tender and increased in size. I was waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I was starting to gag when I brushed my teeth in the morning. I knew I was pregnant and I was so excited. Then this morning I started my period. I have been reading the book Taking charge of your ferility by Toni Weschler and looking for the three signs of ovulation.

I also have been seeing an acupunturist to make sure my body is in sinc. My acupunturist stated that since I had a baby 15 months ago that maybe my body was unable to sustain a pregnancy and we are working on getting my body in the optimal state. He also after talking with him this morning is thinking that I am getting pregnant but I may possible be having miscarrages.

I am 32 years old and have two children ages 2 1/2 and 15 months. We used IVF to conceive my 2 1/2 yr old daughter and my son was a miracle for us. We want one more but dont want to go through all the IVF again and especially since we know we can get pregnant without it.

I never had an IUD, but I still experienced something similar several times. One time, I had all the symptoms you described, plus I had terrible nausea for about a week or so. I was so sure I was pregnant that I was ready to go to the doctor for a blood test when my period finally started. I still don't know for sure what caused this, but I have two ideas. One, it could have been stress, or two, I could have actually been pregnant but miscarried. I suggest the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler, MPH. It will tell you about that possiblity, about how to know for sure the exact day (or even hour) you ovulate, and how to know you are pregnant for sure even before you take a pregnancy test. Good luck, and God bless you!

Hi! If you had the IUD with hormones it could be coming from the hormonal adjustments that your body is trying to make. I know it has been a while since it was removed but it can take up to a year for birth control hormones to get out of your system. I just went off of depo a couple of months ago and have taken a few preg tests. Right now I'm having breast swelling and tenderness which I have only done while pregnant, but I'm not. I've also had the fatigue/tiring quicker than usual, food aversions, mood swings, and some nausea when I first went off.

that is a hard one and I bet even though it is uncomfortable you get a little excited and then let down. If you really have a desire to have another one your symptoms could be your body's reaction to that desire. Or it could just be the hormone fluctuation during your period and the week or so leading up to it. I would definitely see a specialist in fertility. They can run tests, and check your hormone levels that your current doctor might not be checking for, and they can probably help with the concern of these symptoms and help in figuring out what is causing them. Plus (not that you are old), but generally over 35 they put you in high risk just because of your age, so it might be good to have a specialist who deals with those all the time. I wish you the best, I know what you are going through cannot be easy, but try to relax sometimes it can be the best thing.

Hello M.,
Well, I would like to say that I had something similiar, in a way, before finding out about each of my pregnancy's. I'm on my third pregnancy now. But it seems like each time 2 months before each pregnancy, I would be late, so I thought I was pregnant and would take a test but it would turn out negative. And then my period would start after that. Well it did that the 2 months before each time. So I still don't know if I really could have been pregnant before the test actually showed it or not. But good luck with everything and hopefully you will be able to get some answers soon. :) A.(mommy to Raeana, Caiden, and Adelyn due in Dec.)

M.,
A bit of my history, we ttc for 3 years and finally conceived but had a miscarriage at 14 weeks. Two years more of ttc led us to conceiving our twins, who are absolute joy! What seemed to work best for us was Natural Family Planning. It taught us to be aware of my signs of fertility and to best use our windows of opportunity. It is true that women ovulate less as they get older but NFP teaches how to adjust for that. Older women also can double ovulate which is why they are more prone to have fraternal twins. (Ours our Identical- acts of God.) God Bless!

I also had an IUD. I had it removed the end of 2004, beginning of 2005. I thought I was pregnant several times. I'd have symptoms too. One month my period was even 2 weeks late. It was getting to the point where I thought I couldn't have any more babies. I started to question whether my IUD somehow made me unable to get pregnant. In November of 2005 I found out I was pregnant. I now have a beautiful 8 week old girl. Do not give up hope. It took me somewhere between 10 and 12 months to get pregnant after I had my IUD removed. It will happen. I started tracking my menstrual cycle at www.mymonthlycycles.com. I found that this helped me figure out when I was probably ovulating and I started planning for this. Keep trying and use everything at your disposal. Good luck.

I remeber reading either in his book or web site that had to do with hormones that some women are given progesterone cream when trying to concieve. It's Dr John Lee. After having my twins about 6 months they threw my hormones all wacked and started going into premenopause. Well a year later I had to have a hysterectomy. But I remember that they give women having problems progesterone. It is made in your ovaries. Also incase you didn't know, your chance of twins has more than doubled after age of 35! Here's his web site
