When I asked my doctor after my first was born, he said you are considered fertile as soon as your menses return. (I breastfed, so it took a long time for those to come back.) He did mention that there was a higher occurrance of low-birthweight babies if there's less than two years between gestations, but that's just statistics. There are many other factors that you and your doctor may want to weigh before deciding what is the best, safest course of action. I recommend talking with your doc first. He/she may refer you to a genetic counselor as well.

I agree with the moms about giving your body a little time to recover from the two previous pregnancies. How much time? You should discuss this with your doctor who knows you, the situation and your medical history. Everyone is different, and your doctor is the best person to guide you in what is right for you, your health and the health of a potential baby.

Some women are immediately fertile, some take as long as a year. For some women breastfeeding delays fertility, for some it doesn't. (My family usually nurses for 1-2 years, but for those who start trying right away, they usually end up pregnant again LONG before weaning. In fact, the number of "irish twins" in my family outranks those that are 1+ years apart).

I'd wait until at least next month so that your body has at least 3 months to recover. Make sure you're faithful in taking your multivitamins because having babies back to back can really be h*** o* your body. Good luck!

I know lots of people who have tried and gotten pregnant within 4 to 6 months of giving birth. Not that I'm saying it's what you should do, especially if your pregnancies might be considered high-risk. Your doctor will be able to give you the info that is right for you. If you have not had your postpartum check up yet then ask the doc then. Otherwise, give the office a call and see what they recommend. Good luck to you!

No time like the present! :-) If you and your husband want more children then go for it. It may take a little time if you are breastfeeding for your body to ovulate again. So don't get discouraged if it doesn't happen right away, but have fun trying!

P.S. I think having having children close together is wonderful! It might be difficult while they are babies, but when they become toddlers its great for them to have a playmate. Much easier on mom.

Ideally, your uterus needs to heal and prepare from the last one. There is no right answer, but becoming pregnant within the first couple of months after giving birth is not generally recommended.

Our children are 3.5 years apart (which for us is a little far apart), then the next two are 23 months apart and while it was crazy, we like the spread. The next 2 will be 3 years apart. When they are babies, not moving, things are easy. You might want to wait until they are moving and trying to communicate with you....that's when things get interesting....to really see how much attention babies need. Plus, if you are breastfeeding, you body is working hard to give the right nutrition to your baby. This will getting pregnant right away may not allow your body to repair any nutritional deficiencies.

You can anytime. If you are nursing you might have a harder time getting pregnant but people have Irish twins all the time...Good Luck!

hi, after having a baby you are at your most fertile period. you could get pregnant as soon as your 6week check up. i don't know if you want your kids that close but..... also you may want to wait at least a yr to get pregnant because giving birth is every h*** o* the body and might not be an easy pregnancy. good luck!

Give your body a little more time to recover before having a second. It is REALLY hard to have two babies under a year old. I'd wait at least 3-4 months before trying again. You need to recover a little. You will be absolutely exhausted during your second pregnancy and it might help if your first daughter is sleeping a little more before you go through it all again. Even if your kids are 18-24 months apart, that is still really close in age and they will grow up close. Just my opinion, of course.
