M., there's just a period of a couple of days a month that you can get pregnant. You have been trying to get pregnant for one month. Most women, even when not just off the birth control pill, do no conceive in their first month. It is not realistic to expect that.

Hi M.,

It varies for everyone. I was on the pill for 3 years with my first & it took 1 yr for me to get pregnant. With my 2nd I was on for 2 yrs & it took 6 months, for my 3rd I was on the pill for 3 yrs & it only took a month. Good luck.

Hello M.:

Each woman's body is unique, therefore there's no accuracy. My suggestion is for you to bring your body into balance before attempting to conceive. The birth control pills have shifted your immune, digestive, reproductive systems out of balance. Take the time to get the body healthy; this will also increase the likelihood of pregnancy.

If you would like to get started with nutritional and other healthy support, please contact my office for a consultation.

All the best,

Good Luck and lots of luck.. well, first go to babycenter.com there is a little calendar on the right side of the website when u open it and it will ask you for the last time you had your period and it will calculate it for you when you are ovulating and will give you exact dates when you should try. IT WORKED FOR ME...
I have a 2 year old and 8 month old. Also, have sex from the 10th day after your period it's either the 10th 11th 12th or 13th day.. also, u know when u are ovulating when you have a lot of liquid down there and you have discharge and it is clear or even mucusie...

Hi M.,

Andi is right, you can only get pregnant a few days out of the month based on when you ovulate. While you can calculate when you should ovulate based on what the average woman does, every woman is different. I had been on the pill for 5 years when my husband I decided to try for our first baby last summer and I was worried about when I would start ovulating again. There are expensive test kits you can buy, but I charted my basal body temp to figure it out. You need a more accurate thermometer (not tht expensive and I got mine at Target) and you have to take your temp as soon as you wake up, before you get out of bed. The day after you ovulate your temp will go up a few tenths of a degree. I used http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ to chart mine (it's free) and it will tell you when you have ovulated. We decided to try every day until my temp jumped. I went off the pill in May, I didn't chart my temp in June and then I got pregnant in July. It turns out that I ovulate 6 days later than normal, so the typical calculators online didn't work for me. Another benefit is that sometimes your temp will jump again when implantation occurs (mine did), so you may have a clue that you are pregnant before you can take a test. And fertilityfriend told me my due date was April 30th, even though according to my last period it would have been the 24th. That was nice to know when I was almost a week late according to my doctor's calculated due date. My son was born on the 30th.

This method helped me relax about the whole thing because I felt like I knew what was going on, but if it stresses you out it probably won't help. If you have questions feel free to send me an email. Good luck!

S.

When we were ready to start trying, my doctor prepared us for 6-12 months of "trying" b/c I had been on the pill for over ten years. Needless to say... went off the pill at the end of July and got pregnant first week in September! My sister went off the pill after Christmas and was pregnant at the end of January.

Your HS Sex Ed teacher was right- you can get pregnant at any time if you aren't using protection. The doctor said 3 months is typical, but 6-12 is the norm if you are over 30.

It took me 6 months after going off the pill to get pregnant. There are only a few days each month that you can get pregnant so it can take some time. If you have an iphone or ipod touch there is a great app that calculates when you should be ovulating based on information that you enter. There are also websites that have fertility calendars that you can try so at least you will know when you should be ovulating. Relax and have fun trying!

There's no set rule as everyone is unique. And from the responses below you can see that doctors advice is all over the place. For me, I went off birth control and got pregnant with both baby 1 and 2 right away. But that's me and definitely not the norm as I've been told. My sister in law had no problem conceiving baby number one, but it took her 8 months for baby number 2. First thing to factor in is that your body (weight, health, medical conditions) may be different from the first time you tried to conceive. This makes a difference. Secondly, if you aren't having sex around the time you ovulate each month then you won't conceive. There is tons of information all over the internet to help you determine when you ovulate. Several friends of mine used ovulation predictor kits which aren't all that expensive. (Try drugstore.com or even Costco) A few found out they actually ovulated on different days than originally thought which explained why they weren't conceiving. Bottom line is that 6 months is a good indicator. If you aren't successful after trying for that long speak with your doctor. This is usually the point they'll begin to run some tests especially since you've already had a baby. Good luck!!

It usually takes 4 to 5 months to get pregnant at all, and between 2 weeks and a few months for your body to regulate ovulation after going off the pill. Over 50% of couples need a year to get pregnant, so be patient.

I remember getting off a pill beginning of December one year, and got pregnant at the end of February. You've been off the pill for only one month, give it another month or two, I'm sure it will happen soon. Best of luck!

The doctors suggest you wait 3 months as miscarriage rates are slightly higher right after you get off the pill. I was on the pill for 8 years (Yasmine) and when I got off it I got pregnant 1 1/2 months later. So it really does vary and depends more on your age and health than anything else.

My doctor told me that some people find their cycles go back to normal right after going off BC, but it can take up to 6 months for your cycles to regulate. Also, it generally takes 3 months for the lining of your uterus to get really thick and good for implantation (your uterine lining doesn't build up while on BC), which is why she advised I go off BC for 3 months before being to try to conceive. Of course, some people go off BC and get pregnant the next month, but this is generally what they find.

However, even without factoring in BC, my doctor told me it typically takes 6-9 months to conceive, depending on your age. So relax and enjoy trying, but don't stress about it happening right away!

Hi M.,
I don't know much about current birth controls and precautions, but you may want to talk to your doctor about when is a good time to get pregnant after stopping birth control.
It's been years since I've used birth control, but from what I remember, it was advised to discontinue birth control a year before you plan on getting pregnant. To be sure the drugs are completely out of your system-- they are harmful to the fetus and can cause birth defects.
Just a thought and something you may want to check out. Ask for side effects and precautions.
Good luck

it can take several months for all the hormones to get out of your system and to return to normal. you've been trying a very short period of time - you only have 3-5 days each month in which you're ovulating and can conceive. Have you tried an ovulation kit? If not, I'd recommend keeping track of your period and trying in the middle (between periods). That's very general, though, as not all women ovulate exactly at that time.

Good luck.
