Trouble with Swimmers Ear

My daughter has swimmers ear. We went to the doctor three days ago, and he gave us drops. Today she is still in a lot of pain, so we went back to the doctor. He told us to continue with the drops. I would have thought that after almost three days of the drops she would be feeling better. Has anyone else had problems getting rid of swimmers ear? If anyone has had swimmers ear, how long did it take to clear up??

What can I do next?

I agree with Lilli in using the beeswax ear candles to get the ear all cleaned out. The doctor will probably not suggest this because it is a form of alternative medicine. Did you ask the doctor for some pain medication for your daughter so she can get some sleep.
When you put her drops in, have her lay on her side with her head in your lap and just have her lay there for a while letting the medicine penetrate and them do the other ear. Really let the medicine penetrate before putting a cotton ball in the ear.
We also use to plug our noses, hold are breath and try to push the air out. It sometime help loosen the ear because it pressure on the inner ear.
You may also want to try warm compresses or messaging right behind her ear lobe.

It can take a while to clear up depending on the severity. Have the doctor check that this does not turn into a yeast infection in her ear. You will also know if she says her ear itches. After it is cleared up make sure she wears ear plugs when swimming.

Hope she will be fine soon.

My daughter went to Urgent Care last Monday with 1st case of swimmer's ear, and middle ear infection (which she has gotten before) This was more pain for her then any other times, and lasted about 4 days. By Sunday, she was totally cleared up. Give Motrin or Tylenol to help with pain, and you can warm the drops up under the tap to make it more comfortable to give to her. Hope that helps

Hi! I have experience with swimmers ear from being a competitive swimmer back in high school. (This was 18 years ago so maybe my advice is out of date) But anyway, every day after swim practice (4 hours a day for four years!) I made up a solution of half rubbing alcohol and half hydrogen peroxide and then dipped a cotton ball in the solution which I put in each ear. I think this was common practice among my fellow teammates. It prevented infection and dried up the inner ear problems.

Good luck!

We have had multiple experiences with swimmers ear.
I learned to first clean out the wax~I use lukewarm hydrogen peroxide-the wax will bubble up to the surface- and/or ear candles~so the medicine can penetrate better.
Now we have a routine of cleaning out earwax before swim season & it appears to help avoid ear infections.
