Trouble Finding Winter Coats

I have been having some trouble this year finding decent winter coats for my kids. Everything I seem to find online is either ridiculously priced (I'm not going to spend $80 on a coat for a 16 month old) or seems to be big and bulky. Has anyone found any cute, stylish coats that aren't over priced and bulky? I will need one for a girl 18-24 months and one for a boy in a 4. Last year we got them at BabyGap and The Childrens Place, but neither store really has anything cute this year.

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much! I think I will be buying this Summer for next Winter for sure. We ended up getting our 2 y/o's at 77kids online and on sale, hopefully it is good quality once we receive it, I have never ordered from there before. And we got the baby's at Wal-Mart surprisingly for $17, it is fleece lined and not too bulky, I think it will work out well with her carseart.

always buy off season....i always get my kids coats at 75% off @ Macy's, old navy, carters, childrens place, Kohls...I usually pay about $6.99-$9.99 for good quality coats.

since you need them for this season i would try Marshalls or TJ Maxx or better yet craigslist or bookoo

I just bought my son Northface boots from bookoo for $20 that look brand new, we took the $65 boots back!!!

My 6 y/o hates bulky coats, and I hate the price. I found her a really cute coat (not real bulky) at Walmart for $14.00. They had a really great selection.

The mom of the girls I'm babysitting told me that Old Navy has all their coats 50% right now and she got some really cute pea-coat style coats for them yesterday. I'll be hunting for my soon to be 18 mo old soon as well.

Burlington and Costco were great answers I hadn't thought of! I would also suggest looking for a Carter's or Osh Kosh B'Gosh store. They are usually found at outlet malls if you have on near. I have found winter coats there for my daughter the last two years and they usually come with snow pant bibs and a matching coat for less than $30. I also noticed that Target had reasonably priced snow pants and might have coats too. Plus, Carter's and Osh Kosh always have coupons out for 20% of a $40 or $50 purchase, so if you throw in a few more items of clothes, you'll get things at a great price! Good luck! Oh...and I forgot about Gap Outlet too...look for one of those b/c they will have last season's Baby Gap stuff and I have so bought the same coat two years in a row...ha! ;)

I was just at Marshall's the other day and they had a whole rack of children's winter coats for around $20 or so.

Costco has great kid's coats and they are pretty reasonable, under $30. What is usually do is hit the department stores after Christmas when they start marking down winter items. I buy winter clothes in the next size up and put them away for next year. I have never paid more than about $8 for a winter coat for my 3 year old, and the one he has for this year was $3!

Target, Boston Store and Macy's is where I usually find cute coats, of course with Boston Store and Macy's I buy in Jan for the next year because then the coats are 50-75% off. Also if you have a burlington coat factory in your area sometimes I can find something cute and a good price from there.

Have you tried Burlington Coat Factory? I got beautiful Calvin Klein coat for my baby there for $20. The MSRP was $75.00. Like you, I'm not going to spend a small fortune on clothing that my child will outgrow in less than 6 months.

I try to buy off season or at a consignment event. I have had a lot of luck at the Columbia Outlet store too (but again I buy off season). Irregardless try buying something fleece based. That way it will be warm and not so bulky.

I guess it depends on "cute." I really liked the winter coats I got at Wal Mart for that age--just servicable and basic colors with detachable fleece liners and hoods. I think they were $20 or $25 regular price. Target also has nice looking coats. If you are looking at the boy's size 4 it will be pricier anyway. I second consignment shops, or check ebay or Craigslist. Kids don't always wear on their coats much and it is a lot cheaper that way. I wouldn't even spend $80 on a coat for myself so it is hard to imagine seeing that price tag on one for a child. I guess the ones we have are bulky in the sense that they are winter coats and keep the kids warm. Are you looking for more of a girls' pea coat or something? That probably wouldn't be that warm anyway.

I love the coats that have the zip out liner. That are warm, most have fleece inside but they aren't as bulky. You can find those and alot of cute coats at Target, Walmart or Kmart for $15-$30.

I agree with the other mamas that said to buy off-season. I usually shop LLBean for my daughter's winter coats. I buy very late in the summer via their clearance shop. I have gotten excellent coats for a third of the retail cost. LLBean's kids coats also have a sleeve extension feature...you snip this hidden red thread and it extends the sleeve length a couple inches. She will get a second winter out of her current coat because of this. They have excellent quality and stand behind their product 100%.

OldNavy.com is having a 30% off sale on coats TODAY ONLY! I just ordered my son a precious charcoal gray toggle coat and they had lots of cute ones in the $15-30 range. Land's End is also a great place to get really good coats. Hanna Anderson has cute stuff too, and it isn't cheap, but it's not $80 a coat.
