Hi everyone, I have a question about Halloween. We just moved here in Feb and I've found from living in both Ca and Wa everywhere is different on Halloween. In Ca you don't see many kids trick or treating in neighborhoods it's mostly trunk or treats and malls, although in Wa everyone still trick or treats, we took our kids every year. So i'm curious how it is in Tx? do kids still trick or treat around neighborhoods? Also, we live in around Castle Hills in an apartment, what would you do? do you just pick a close neighborhood? I don't want to make anyone mad since we don't technically live there? I've heard people complain about drop in trick or treaters. Which surprises me, we often had kids from other neighborhoods come into ours, never bothered me a bit. We just bought a house and I would love to go in our new neighborhood but it's all new construction and no one lives there lol. Any suggestions???
Thanks everyone for the kind responses. To clarify, i will not be dropping of "van loads" or kids. lol and no my husband and I won't be trick or treating lol My boys are 21/2 and almost 5. We really didn't want to do the whole mall thing or a festival cause to me that's not trick or treating. We have no family or friends here otherwise we would go with them, we usually go trick or treating with my sister and niece, we all dress up it's fun! This moved has been h*** o* all of us, my son is really missing his aunt so we wanted to keep things as normal and fun as possible. We love it here and people are so nice here. I honestly wouldn't have even thought twice about going (when I was little we never stayed in our own neighborhood lol) but I read a couple answers to other questions on here saying it's not ok to go in other neighborhoods, specifically castle hills. or people saying they have a separate bowl for kids who live in the neighborhood and those that don't?? I mean I get the teenager thing, that gets ridiculous but to punish little ones?? It's a fun holiday and shouldn't be so difficult. Wanda, I didn't realize the fields at Carrollton did a festival we live in the apts right there, so maybe we'll check that out. :) Again, thanks so much for the respones. We just chose the closest neighborhood with the most Halloween decorations. Most people here have a 'the more the merrier' attitude and just enjoy the holiday.
If your kids are school age, what about going trick-or-treating in the neighborhoods around their school? That's what we always did when I was a kid (my kids aren't school age yet).
Trick or treating is big here - not sure about apartments, though. You could call your apartment manager and see if they know the typical trick or treating 'traffic'. I would think picking a close neighborhood would be just fine as well :) Happy Halloween and welcome to Texas (I'm a former Californian as well).
You are lucky to be so close to Castle Hills, probably one of the most pro-trick or treating subdivisions we have. Just drive in and park next to the park with the big green dragon. If you want something totally cool and different, go trick-or-treating on Swiss Avenue in Dallas.
Halloween is big in Texas! I see no reason to not find a pleasant neighborhood to go trick or treating. Go to one that has a lot of Halloween decorations and I am sure that you will be welcomed. We live in an older neighborhood that has traditionally done holidays to the max. There aren't that many kids that live in our neighborhood anymore, but they do come by the van loads from other areas. I don't have any problem with it myself and obviously my neighbors don't either or they would not answer the door. I only have a problem with the ones that are not polite. It bother's me when the parents are holding out a bag for themselves! Sometimes they will say it is for a sick kid at home, but often they don't even say "trick or treat" or anything, just hold out their bag along with the kids. Some of the kids don't even bother to say "trick or treat" or "thank you." Unless they are really young or seem very shy, I won't give them any candy until they say "trick or treat." As they walk off I remind them to say "thank you." When I run out of candy, I just turn off the lights and don't answer the door.
It depends on the neighborhood. I'm in Arlington, and some neighborhoods do it and some don't. Since mine doesn't, we have to drive to a different neighborhood for Trick or Treat.
We lived in Carrollton for several years and did a combination of church Fall Festival (early) and trick or treating (a little later). I'm sure Castle Hills is a great neighborhood for trick or treating, so that's an easy option for you. I would also recommend checking out the First Baptist Carrollton Fall Festival at The Fields which starts at 5:30 pm. This would be fairly close to where you live, and if you get there at starting time it's not too crowded. They have food for sale, so you can grab a bite to eat while the kids have some fun.
Another popular church event is at Prestonwood, although I've never tried that one. It starts at 6 pm.

Trick or treating is HUGE in my neighborhood. Everybody is outside and socializing and handing out treats.
Our neighborhood is one of those that get kids dropped of by van loads from other areas of Dallas with pillow cases. I am not crazy about that part because I have at least 500 kids from my regular neighborhood and students from the nearby elementary school.
Someone who comes through who are nice people and just visiting with friends is one thing and I am perfectly ok with that. It is the van loads of people who obviously do not live in our neighborhood we are all skeptical of (casing houses, garages, etc). They tend to come out later in the evening and that is when we close up the doors, windows and treats. I'm sorry but van loads of kids old enough to drive just doesn't sit well with our neighborhood.
I do both trunk or treats and neighborhood. I am a drop in trick or treater, so we can go with friends. I don't know the people in our neighborhood, and I am not sure how it would go since most of the houses do not have kids. I might try tonight, we will see. I have never heard complaints about drop ins, my main complaint is parents bringing just infants who are too young to eat the candy, and older teens who should be home passing it out instead of collecting. I would go where you want, and not worry about it.
When I lived in an apartment complex and my daughter was 3, I just took her to the apartments in the complex. It was a big complex and we were exhausted by the time we got done!
