Traveling to St. Lucia with a 2 Year Old

We're leaving on the 20th and coming back on the 3rd. This will be his first flight. What things should I bring to keep him quite/occupied durning the flight? Our flight leaves at 6:30 am, and we have a stop over for an hour and a half in Atlanta. I'm starting to get worried. I did invest in a portable DVD Player, so he could watch some movies. What else? I don't want people looking at me like KEEP HIM QUITE.

Thanks

What can I do next?

When we travel with our 21 month old and 38 month old, we have them ride in their carseats. They are used to the fact that that is their special place in the car and that once in, they can't get out. That really helped us. The other thing I did before the trip was I went to the dollar store and picked up a variety of new items to bring out as they became fidgety. Start with familiar items and save the ones you think will get the most interest for last when you are getting despirit. Little books, small animals, coloring/drawing items, puzzles, and cards are good items. Definitely have plenty of snacks and a sippy or 2. Sometimes mine noticed the air pressure change and other times they don't notice it at all. Be sure not to travel if your child has an ear infection - that's just not nice.

Hi. We took our daughter to Trinidad and Tobago, a 5 hour flight, when she was 11 months old. I brought her lots of snacks, her favorite toy and book. Also, I bought a new toy to pull out when she got bored with everything else. Be prepared that he may have some problems with his ears due to the pressure in the plane. If he does, sucking (like on a bottle or sip cup) works to relieve that. And this may sound bad, but after about 2 hours on the plane, I gave her some Tylenol just in case her ears did hurt. Plus, she took a great nap. I asked her doctor about this and she said it was fine to do. Oh, dress your son in very comfortable clothes. Have a great time!

hi S.,
i think you need to get some ear plugs for you son. the reason is because once the plane is at a certain height his ears are going to hurt. the dvd and everything else will be fine.

Hello,
St lucia is such a pretty destination! Well, you're flight between ATL and St Lucia is about 4 and 1/2 hours so that's going to be your tough one. The first segment should be relatively easy since your 2 year old will probably still be getting use to his surroundings. I've taken my children all over from a very young age. We always take books, crayons, paper, little cars...anything that my children like to play with. Hopefully your son is still into taking naps. My kids would normally just fall right asleep since there's so little to do. It will be fine.

Have a wonderful time in St Lucia!
L.

GOOD LUCK!! lol I traveld often with my son from the age of 1 till he was about 2, take little cookies, some juice pouches, and baby tylenol!! because of the elevation change, children have a hard time dealing with the feeling we get in our ears, my doctor told me to take something my son could suck on because it helps pop the ears.... I know its kinda strange but I think it helped my son! Also the flight att. are very good about helping you out with seating, and let you board first.

What a fabulous trip!!! I would suggest that you have his car seat. Call the airline because it may be mandatory and he may even have to be on the window seat. If you do have his seat, either you or your husband should board the plane first to install the seat in peace (when they announce boarding for anyone with special needs). Meanwhile, your son must be one of the last ones to board and he must be running around a lot. When you make your stop to change planes, make sure that he runs around as much as possible because he'll be cooped up in his seat for a really long time.
We took our son across the country when he was 18 months old. On our flight back home, he got really bad diarrhea. He had caught some bug the night before and it manifested in the airport. We had plenty of wipes, but they were only aggravating his poor little red bottom. Just in case, have a washcloth and some applesauce. In our case, we did not have the applesauce on us or the washcloth and our son suffered through the flight while he was awake.
