I am traveling Southwest next week with a two and a half year old (who has a seat) and a one year old (who doesn't have a seat). Any ideas how to keep them occupied during a 4 hour flight? We do have a travel dvd player but I don't want to use it the whole time. We are traveling in the evening but I think they might be too excited to sleep. Thanks for any advice!

What can I do next?

Snacks! I would also buy them a few new small toys that you think would entertain them, and don't give them to the kids until the trip. Having something new and different to play with might be a distraction. My 2 year old likes to "draw", so we brought a little notebook and crayons. Check out the Dollar store, dollar bins at Target and Michaels, and the baby toy aisle for anything that you think they would like, and make them a little surprise bag of "stuff" to keep them distracted. Good luck!

I have an online community site on family travel. You can find tips there for travelling with your kids. Here is an article on toys that will keep them entertained on the airplane.

We have traveled a lot with our 5 and 2 yr olds. I have one who won't sit through a movie. These are some of the things that we have done.

Make sure you have some new toys that they haven't seen before. (Need to make sure that they won't make a mess or have little pieces, something that will hold their attention for more than 2 minutes. It just depends on what your child likes to do.)

Lots and lots of snacks!!! I always bring lollipops. They last a long time, keep my kids quiet because they aren't used to getting them, and help them clear their ears on take-off and landing. Downside, they are messy. Bring babywipes. Also, bottles/sippy cups are good for ears.

Make sure you have the bottle/sippy cup. Those little airline cups they serve drinks in are perfect for spilling all over you or the person next to you.

Bring their favorite comfort items. For some kids it is extremely stressful to travel and anything that helps them be calm is helpful. My younger one used to always get a fever when we traveled.

I have a pile of toys that are great for traveling in a cupboard that I try not to take out much when we are at home. Things that work for us are Doodle Pro boards, books, magnetic/felt scene boards, stickers.

Depending on your child, I used to spend most of the time walking up and down the aisle. My first child HATED to sit still. Most of the time the flight attendants are nice about it. Just ignore the ones that aren't. Same with the passengers. :) I wish you good luck and, maybe, you'll get lucky and they'll both sleep. It happened to me once. :)

I just asked a similar Q last week... try this link and see if it brings you to the Q&A page:

also, when I traveled with my 13mo old, I let her play with a "my 1st laptop" on the plane, even when we were landing--with the volume on low, it bothered no one b/c with the ambient airplane noise, it wasn't very noticeable. (And this is a toy which I knew she already liked, but I hid it for a week+ so it would be "new" again on the trip).

I think the one year old will sleep I know my daughter did At that age. For the other one take new toys or even little travel games. We bought our daughter her leapster when she was that age for a trip & she love it plus it kept her entertained while learning. I also recommend the ear plugs that help keep the pressure even they are at walmart & wal greens in Arizona. It helps with the ears & that is usually what caused us problems in traveling.
