Transitioning from Formula to Whole Milk

Does anyone have any thoughts on buying Oberweis Milk or Horizon vs. a regular gallon of milk in the grocery store. Oberweis claims that it doesn't give steroids or growth hormones to their cows and, therefore, I was thinking to go this route. My father-in-law swears that the growth hormones given to cows is the reason why girls are maturing at a much younger age now. Any thoughts on this?

Hi M.,

I've done a lot of research on the milk issue as a biology teacher. You can find advice either way but you have to look at the source. I won't touch milk that isn't organic. Besides growth hormones/steroids there can also be antibiotics and pesticides in the fat of any milk that is not organic. Organic milk must come from antibiotic/pesticide/growth hormone FREE cows which means you are cutting down your exposure (and your children's exposure) to harmful toxins and chemicals. While Oberweis does not have growth hormones, it isn't "organic". Oberweis is a better choice than regular store bought milk, but in my opinion, organic milk is even a step above that. Do what you can do...And I agree with the other responses, at least Oberweis looks and tastes like milk! It certainly does taste good. Here's to health!

There is a chemist in our family and he gives his daughter organic milk because he doesn't want hormones and steroids to pass along to his young daughter. Remember that Oberweiss is not 100% organic; it's just better than what you buy at the store. Also, Oberweiss is currently running for political office. Keep in mind his positioning and if you agree or not, you may want to keep that same philosophy with his business.

I too will soon need to transition my little one to whole milk and am not sure what to do - have the same dilema. My 14 yr old always drank regular 2% milk and she was actaully slow as developing... she just got her period half a year ago (and I couldn't afford organic or oberwies at that time). If you are going to buy organic milk... are you getting everything else organic (fruits, cheese, yogurt, vegetables)... if not, I am not sure how much it would help (based on your reason). I am asking you this... because these are the same questions I am asking myself. I am trying to figure out if I can afford to buy all my groceries organic. GL on your decision.

Hi M.,

We also use Oberweis milk. It's double the price of store brand, but we feel it's worth it. My husband has milk allergies, but can drink Oberweis without getting sick. Not only does it look like milk (unlike some store brands, whose skim looks like grey water), but it tastes good and I like the fact that we can return the glass bottles, which cuts down on environmental waste too.

Best of luck with your decision! It's definitely a hotly debated topic.

Hi M.

Oberweis milk is the best. I email someone from the company and he said they are as close to "organic" as you can get. It tastes so much better than regular milk. Just try it out i'm sure you will love it. My 3 girls love it!!

Good luck

There was a website (can't remember where I found it!) that rated organic milks and the top brand was Organic Valley. Horizon was poorly rated (meaning it truly did not meet the "organic" criteria as it proclaims). And I do not support Oberweis on any level ;), besides, it's not really even organic.

I give my twins Oberweis whole milk . I figure it's worth the effort and price to keep the hormones, steroids, antibiotics , etc. out of their systems if I can. There are so many chemicals in everything from milk, food, bathwash, diapers, wipes etc that if you eliminate what you can you are doing your child a favor.
If you buy your Oberweis from Jewel and not Oberweis ,watch the experation date. I got it once and it was expired.Good luck!

I'm from the other side here and I just use store bought milk. BUT, that being said, I'm really starting to consider changing to organic and more "green" products around the house.

I admit, it's hard. I'm in a rut and used to what we've always done. Part of my brain says "I drank store-milk and I'm ok." and the other side says, "But we KNOW better now". When my mom was pregnant, she quit smoking but her doctor only suggested that she "maybe cut down". Again, research has shown the startling facts and we know better.

Do what you feel is best in your head/heart.

Good luck.

Hi M.,

We use Oberweis, too. While I understand that it isn't organic, I think this is a good choice for my family. I agree with other reasons stated by the others. I also like that it comes in glass bottles and is delivered to my door every week. I always know that we will have milk!

Good luck! Who knew which milk to buy would be such a decision!

HI M.,

For the same reason that your FIL gave you..we go the route of the OBERWEIS. We get home delivery of the milk, It tastes better and is much nicer and smooth. My daughter cannot take anything besides oberweis..she is so used to it.

At the store you would pay 70 ents to one dollor as deposit for bottles. I get two week supply in home delivery and you do not pay deposit (u do have to pay one time cooler charges)
