My family is preparing for a long road trip out to Bend Bend National Park. I'm planning on getting my two year-old twin sons some new toys or books that will hopefully keep them entertained for at least some of the time that they will be confined to the car. Any suggestions on good travel toys?
Doodle Pro or Color Wonder markers are always entertaining & easy. Books are always good, esp if they're interactive. Leap Frog makes a ton of great products and leap pad might be a good option. Of course you can never go wrong w/ dvd player either! :-)
Make sure they have a desk type of thing, they can color,
Avon had a few themed ones and I won't be lucky to see a book till tomorrow to give ideas of what you can do on your own.
Be prepared for 5 to 6 different toys. Make sure to take the favorite home one unless it is small and can be dropped and cried over if you are unable to reach it.

On our last car trip, my daughter (15) and I went to the dollar store and picked up various items and put them in different bags. Every so many miles, they would get a new little baggie. This is similar to the little gift bags tht kids often get at a birthday party to take home. They had colors, coloring books, stories on cd, little play things, etc. It gave them something to look forward to along the way. I have found over the years that what they start off with, they can get pretty bored with as the day rolls on. I still had other things for them to start with (like the magna doodles, etch-a-sketch, etc.). We travel a LOT and this is something they enjoy. The last trip we took did not have a dvd player in the car so this was what got them through.
Looks like you've got some great ideas here. We use the portable dvd player to, but we only pull it out after a good 2 to 3 hours on our trip or if they're really getting fussy. Really, we'll pack books like the 123 or ABC box books from Discovery Toys. It's at www.getkidtoys.com. We also turn on music they love like the Sounds like fun CD, also discovery toys. I'm a rep., so I use their stuff a lot. Besides that one we play disney songs and we let them color. We have cards and hold them up and ask them to tell us what they see and what colors they are. We sing with them little songs like Old McDonald and we let them pick the animal every time the song comes to " Old McDonald had a . ..." It's funny to listen to the animals they choose. The best investment we ever made was a portable DVD player. While I don't like my child to watch hours and hours of TV normally, it sure is helpful on a long trip! She was 3 when we took our first long trip (13 hours) and it was a life saver!
She also likes coloring books and coloring.
They have a magna doodle made for the car. And when we travel a long way like that we take a very small dvd player that fits on the console for our little girl to watch. TV isn't always the best for small childeren but believe me you'll be ever so happy that you have it. Good Luck
Mr. Potato head. Also, be prepared to stop often. Bring a ball or some cars that they can play with at a road-side stop.
