i'm looking for some information on used toy donations. i'm going to have my son pick out some of the toys he really doesn't use anymore and donate them, to help clear out our toy room a bit and to help get the gift-giving point across to him. anyway, i know most toy donation charities are for new toys, but does anyone know of somewhere in the pittsburgh area that takes gently used stuff? i don't know if goodwill takes them or not, so i thought i'd check here for ideas first before i called there.

thanks so much!

I know that some local daycares will accept gently used toys. I give all the toys my kids have outgrown to their daycare and they are very appreciative of it. It is a smaller daycare, not like a KinderCare, and anything that you can give is a big help. Hope this helps. Happy Holidays.

Hi M., Yes, Goodwill and Salvation Army will take toys, so will your local battered woman's shelter. The toys should be clean, and have all the parts. I used to donate clothes and toys to the battered woman's shelter all the time...kids go there too! You can't take the items directly to the shelter since the locations are supposed to be secret, you have to know someone who works there (I did it that way) or take it to a location that accepts donations for the shelter (usually a local hospital or police station). Have a great Christmas!

The boy scouts are collecting gently used toys right by the front door of Howe Elementary school until Dec 16th. I think they are giving them to the Salvation Army

St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic organization which will take gently used items...clothes, toys, household items, etc. They operate stores where people who are in need can purchase them at reduced prices. It's tax deductible, too.

While Goodwill and the Salvation Army do accept donations of used toys, I would offer them first to a funeral home or car dealership with a playroom. These are two places that have a very limited selection of toys. Not that they need a huge amount but a little variety is nice when you have to wait for your vehicle to be repaired with your kids or if you take your children to a viewing when a loved one passes away. Other places would be prechools or day care centers. I am sure any of the above would be most appreciative.

We've donated toys to the following: Once Upon a Child, Goodwill, local church nurseries and a local thrift store (St. Mary's something of something).

I know that in Shadyside at a church (not sure of the name) on the corner of Baum and some little side street...they have a toy lending library. You can actually go a "borrow" toys like you would do books. I'm not sure if they take used toys or not. I love the idea and if they take them, it would make some kids very happy. Also I know that "Once upon a child" will buy them from you to re-sell. They have to be really nice and pretty clean. For the name of the church Google toy lending library in Pgh.

HI M.,
I'm curious to see the responses you get. We did a holiday collection for a women's shelter at work but they had to be new.
O. other idea--group them by age-appropriateness and put the batches on Craig's List for free. That way someone who really needs and wants them will come and get them. plus it's free to list them.
Good luck!
