My 6 year old just lost his first tooth. He is so excited. What do tooth fairies pay these days? We got silver dollars when I was younger and I thought it was really cool. Does the first one rate more than others? Would love to hear your experiences/stories!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all the responses! We ended up leaving $5 (that was what mom had that night), but will probaby be a silver or gold dollar coin for the next tooth. I've already been to the bank and have a couple of each just in case!! My son didn't want the tooth fairy to take the tooth so we also end up writing a letter to the tooth fairy asking if he could keep it. He hasn't really looked at it since he got the money but figure I can probably put the tooth away and he will never miss it! Thanks again!!

We give $1.

My almost 6 year old son is weirdly attached to his teeth, so he writes a letter with each tooth asking if he can keep it. The "tooth fairy" writes back saying he can as long as he takes good care of the teeth in his mouth and brushes them well twice a day. She (we) leaves $1 even though he keeps the tooth. He keeps his lost teeth in a baggie in a box in his room. ??? Strange. He doesn't have any cavities though! :-)

There are people in Palm Beach who leave $100 bills so a nationwide poll won't help you calibrate what is appropriate to your child's peer group. But it is fun to give them money in unusual forms, whether it's Susan B. Anthony dollars or $2 bills or 100 pennies in a roll.

My son gets a $2 bill -- he keeps misplacing it in the house, so it's the same one over and over, he doesn't notice and doesn't care.

Our daughter always loved quarters, so we gave her 4 quarters for each tooth fairy visit.

I have a funny story, well, I think it's funny. Our granddaughter is losing teeth left and right. This Summer she lost 3 in about a week and a half. We were very tight on funds and here she was grinning from ear to ear telling us the tooth fairy was coming that night. I was so upset, we had NO MONEY at all. Not even change, it was payday in a couple of days and we didn't need anything but just didn't have any cash.

I thought and thought. We were planning a road trip with my best friend and all our kids so we had been talking about going on vacation. So I came up with the idea to tell K that the tooth fairy was on vacation and would be back in just a couple of days. She was disappointed but knew going on vacation was an awesome fun time, so she accepted it, we put the teeth in a cup on my desk and keep them put up. The tooth fairy came back from vacation the 3rd, payday, and delivered a dollar for each tooth.

The funny part comes next.

She was laying on the couch watching Phineus and Ferb the other night and suddenly jumps up yelling "I just pulled my own tooth!!!". She came straight to me and said "You need to get on the internet and find out if the tooth fairy is on vacation again!!!". Well, she wasn't on vacation and all is well in the world. K woke up with a nice crisp dollar bill under her pillow.

Going rate at my house was $5 for first tooth and $1 for every other one. When the tooth fairy forgot to come it would be $2. Oops!

I know a friend of mine would leave real gifts like skateboards.
My kids got 50 cents. And they still do, my youngest is 9.
I think a silver dollar is a great idea.
OH, and I didn't pay anything more for the first or last one.

we gave more for the first one...(can you believe I don't remember what it was!)...since then it's been a box of crayons for one, 4 quarters for her 4th one lost and a box of markers for another.

I think $1 per tooth is appropriate, maybe a little extra (as much as $5) for the first and last tooth.

Our DD lost, well had to have her first two baby teeth pulled a few weeks ago (b/c her perms were growing in behind the babies and deflecting backwards) and we gave her the Gold Dollar Coins... $1 for each tooth. Unfortunately the "tooth fairy" was extremely busy the night they were pulled so she got an extra $2 (one for each ooops). My daughter absolutely loved getting the coins! I think the silver dollars would be pefect!

My son lost his first tooth at 6, the day before he started kindergarten. Since he doesn't know how to count money, quantity is better than quality. So, I put a few different coins under his pillow and he thought he was rich.

Be careful, your setting expectations with this first one. If they toothfairy is rather generous this time, they'll expect the same next time.
