So What Happened?

HI Moms, after all the responses I received, I called the dental office and found out they actually did not do an "official" root canal but instead did an pulpotomy which is very similar to the dreaded root canal. I took my son back and saw an older dentist there and examined the tooth, he said that there was infection for which he gave my son antibiotics for and also he said the filling was hitting the upper tooth so he fixed that as well, my son now has pain but barely, will keep monitoring it. Thanks, Moms, I love this site.

Never heard of a root canal working out well on a baby tooth. Everyone I know ended up getting it extracted due to complications. Just have the tooth removed and if they are worried about the spacing they can put in something to hold that space open.

My son had two baby molars extracted due to abcesses days shy of his 7th b'day and he wore a spacer for about 4 years almost and did fine.

He did have to go periodically to his pedi dentist to have the appliance checked and adjusted in between his check ups

Good luck

Not the root canal, but my sons have both had several teeth extracted. My youngest had his first ones pulled at 7 when he developed abscesses on the roots of two of his molars. They have both done fine with all their extractions, it was no big deal.

Sounds like a scam to me. I'd find another dentist. Preferably one that isn't willing to charge you for a ROOT CANAL (not to mention putting your child through that) on a baby tooth. I'd be highly suspicious of any dentist that did that.

No to the root canal .. but extractions yes. Ours went fine - kids were ok with them and no complications. Good luck :)

I'd consider a second opinion at this point. I realize you're already hundreds (or thousands?) of dollars into this, but I'm just so surprised about root canal on a tooth he's going to lose anyway. How many teeth are you talking about here? Ask the pediatrician or good friends for a referral to an additional dentist/oral surgeon, and take your X-rays with you (you paid for them, you own them - you don't have to pay for a 2nd set).

Root canals on baby teeth are a waste of money. Many, many parents have made that same mistake. From now on, if it's a baby tooth, have it pulled. Get a spacer if you have to to hold the space for the permanent tooth, but don't put your child through a root canal on a baby tooth.

He got a root canal on a baby tooth and he's 8? I think I'd change dentists and I'd tell the new one to pull the baby teeth because they seriously don't need extensive work at age 8. They'll be coming out in a few months to a year or so. If they were lose and came out tomorrow they'd have that hole they'd have if the tooth was pulled.

That baby tooth should have been pulled, not given a root canal, imo. Time for a new dentist.

One of my kids fell down a few stairs and landed on his face when he was 4. It killed one of his front baby teeth. He had a root canal, which was actually less bothersome for him than a normal filling. The gum area was slightly swollen for a couple days, but it wasn't particularly painful and there was no subsequent infection requiring extraction. It fell out on it's own when his adult teeth started coming in.
