My 3 1/2 year old has tonsillitis since Friday. I took her to the doc as soon as I saw that she couldn't swallow. She was prescribed antibiotics for 10 days. Tomorrow will be the last day of them but she still got the white dots there and her breath is still bad. I don't know what to do. The doc said it will take time for the dots to go away, but my husband has had tonsillitis and his go away fast and he doesn't have bad breath. Any of your kids have had tonsillitis before? How long did it take? Also how high was the fever they got? her fever was really mild thanks God

So What Happened?

I forgot to add, she is fine, eating drinking and playing around. It does not hurt or bother her at all. I am just trying to figure out if tonsillitis is the right diagnosis lol

I used to get the white dots on my tonsills and had the bad breath. My daughter would also get that as well & sometimes had strep along with it. The antibiotic they treat the tonsillitis w/is usually going to be just as strong as what they'd treat strep with but if she's that young starting with this, I'd seriously consider going to an ENT. They waited until I was 19 to take mine out and my daugher was 8. She missed about 40 days of school every school year prior to them taking them out. Now we're down to strep maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Good luck!

I didn't read any of the other answers- but wanted to answer you because white spots and the bad breath( a very distinct smell) is always how I know that I have strep! What did the dr. prescribe? hopefully either penicillin of amoxicillin because this sounds like strep to me. And make sure you follow thru on the whole dosage before she is completely 'better'.

White dots=Strep throat. It can take a while for it to clear up OR she may need to be cultered and make sure she was given the right antibiotic.

Get a throat culture for strep. Even if she doesn't have it, she will likely need another round of antibiotics. When I had the white spots on my tonsils (not strep) I needed 2 rounds of antibiotics and I haven't had them since. If she still has a low grade strep infection, the strep can become another illness called rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever can damage the heart and sometimes vision and hearing.

It is important to take the full dose of antibiotics even if your child starts to feel better, and if you don't cure the infection completely, the bacteria that remain can produce new bacteria that are resistant to the antibiotics.

I think it sounds like tonsil stones also. Gargling with saltwater a few times a day can help get them out if she can do that. (I doubt she'll let you pick them out.)

Sounds like she may have Strep. If so, penicillian usually works best and sometimes takes two or three rounds to clear completely.

Hi J.:

Everyone responds differently to illness and the recovery time. The bad breath sounds to be a build up of toxins in her system and an upset in her stomach/overall digestive system, unfortunately the antibiotics would worsen the condition. The white dots sound to be Candida, which is a build up of yeast in the body. I recommend consulting with a qualified natural healthcare practitioner to assist your daughter's full and healthy recovery.

Take care,

How is she acting? Does she say her throat hurts? Does she have a
temp? If she is not feeling well then I would go back to doc. If she is
acting fine and eating, I would wait and see how things go.

White pustules in the back of the throat are the classic symptom of strep (the number one cause of tonsillitis). Some forms of strep are antibiotic resistant. CALL your doc to let her/him know that they're still there, he/she may very well want to run a different course of antibiotics.

Tonsillitis in and of itself just means "inflammation of the tonsils". The cause and treatments of tonsillitis vary quite a bit.

She may have tonsil stones in her throat (white dots, which can be food stuck back there will cause bad breath). I had this growing up as a child. My mother never did anything about it and I still have tonsil stones now. I have to take the tonsil stones out myself (sounds so gross) because they irritate my throat and yes it does cause bad breath. Its not fun to go to the doctor every time you have a tonsil stone. Take her to an ENT and they can help. If they think it is tonsil stones, they may try to take them out. If she does have tonsil stones, antibiotics aren't going to help, she may need her tonsils out. Your daughter is not running a high fever either, so it could not be strep. Either way if she is in a lot of pain, the ENT can be more help for her.

Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

Thanks!

The white dots usually means strep. She really needs to be tested. Since she's already had a round of antibotics, she may not be showing other signs, like the sore throat and fever. She propably need to have a culture done rather than the quick test done in the doctor's office. The sooner the better.

My son is going through another episode now which started just yesterday. Last time he had (a month back), the fever lasted for 3-4 days. The doctor said the size has come down when we took him the third day after starting the antibiotics (penicillin).
